  1. Oh. Almost forgot to tell you that the buck I got last week was standing in the exact spot as the doe I got exactly one week prior. Shot her on an observation sit. The “accidental doe” gave me clues for how to get my buck. First deer with a bow from a treestand. Normally I’m on the ground. Both were 12 yards directly down wind, right where I said they would never be. [emoji23] Being tagged out before November is … uncomfortable at the moment. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. 2. I’m thrilled that my preparation paid off. This happened exactly as I imagined it would. Trail cam pic was taken the day before I shot him. He’s a “dork deer.” See his overbite? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. Problem #1: How to get to treestand without leaving sleeping bag. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. Freezing cold with occasional horizontal snow and completely uneventful sit this morning. Followed by freezing cold uneventful until the last possible minute this afternoon. Finally saw deer on this overpressured property. Only problem was they were behind me and then behind me again and then running back and forth across the field like chickens with their heads cut off. They held me hostage in the stand long enough to get me shivering head to toe. Mixed group of 5 with two small bucks, who did some sparring in the field for extra entertainment. That was a long cold day to have to choose not to shoot at the end of my comfortable range. And then to not shoot after legal light. Glad the long cold day and excitement didn’t cause me to make a bad decision. I’m looking for the “win” in this situation. And... looking for my extra warm socks and more firewood. Brrrr!!! 5. If I’m going to hunt in a place that is completely deerless, it may as well be this place. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. Hoping someone travels through here on the way to a friends freezer. Old friend who loaned me a gun for my first three years of hunting can no longer hunt due to age and health problems. Trying to fill his freezer for him. Fingers crossed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. This stand has been iced over since opening of gun season. After fighting my way through a frozen crater filled moonscape I’m sitting in it anyway. I need a deicing system. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. Stands are covers in ice. So I’m on the ground. In freezing rain. I’ve had worse. At least I saw deer...between me and the road. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. That happens automatically [emoji16][emoji106] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. I find that once I get it sweaty/smelly I can never get it scent free. I think I do...but then as soon as it heats up on my body, it smells again. Also, I noticed a difference between the UA that was too small vs properly fit. The ones I “grew out of” always made me feel cold at some point. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. On a hilltop watching a wall of snow approach. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. I do this as a natural toothbrushing on the way to my spot. I also consider it lucky. I’ve only done it once this season due to a lack of apples at the house, and it was the day I was able to put one in the freezer. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. Live from the kitchen window while processing Saturday’s buck. Sideways snow an a young buck chasing a doe through the front field. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. I used up all my luck finding that deer yesterday. The drag to the trail where I could use a sled was 100 yards through thick shit. I can see a similar struggle going on here. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. My plan was to shoot the first buck that was in range, and I did. A delicious spike. No buck shaming! He will be very appreciated by the cook of the house, who complained that I only shot big bucks for the last two seasons. Set up a tree stand in the “way back” of my property. Scrapes just showed up within 50 yards of it. 9:00 this morning I see him visiting a scrape and think, I should pass. Then I remembered my promise, and the quality of steak that comes from a deer that age. Then I learned some lessons on what happens when a deer gets too close to your stand. (I’ve hunted from the ground for years, stands only for gun season when I need a longer reach.) He was at about 18 yards. One lung. No blood trail at all. I was so sure it was a good shot. Couldn’t believe I didn’t hear him crash. Ran well over 100 yards deep into the thickest stuff on the property. Took a grid search to find him. Sooo thankful that I did find him!!
  16. LOL. I took this from my car. I’m pretty sure that’s cheating. This buck is in the same place at the edge of town most days. I couldn’t help myself. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. On the ground with an 8point. [emoji16][emoji106] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. Delayed ... Meanwhile. I smelled something perfume like as I took this pic. Realized it was my phone. So into my pocket it went without posting. Doe with fawn in tow in the last minutes. She stayed just out of range. My success this evening was making no bad decisions. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. And then all that snow melted and fell on me. Back at the house with clothes in the dryer. Didn’t see a thing. It was like the woods was having a snow ball fight and I was in the middle of it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. At a conference. Got this pic from home. My front field. 6 point cruising may up with a doe and fawn. Then kept cruising. Past my stand no doubt. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. Wind sounded calm when I woke up. Now it sounds like a train coming across the top of the hill.
