Another cool thing google maps has for the iphone is tax map boundaries. Depending if your county has the online GIS tax maps. Here in Herkimer county I can see where I am and where the property lines are. All you have to do is open google maps on your phone, turn off the satellite view, and they will be displayed.

Is it legal in NY to use a spear? That looks like a serious challenge
-
Today it seems that all the tv shows, hunting products, magazines, and forums are always trying to make it easier to kill a deer. I want to know what is the most challenging way to kill a whitetail here in NY...With what weapon and what method. For example, spot and stalk with a handgun or long bow from a tree stand.

My brother in law shot a doe last sunday morningg, and we have been letting it hang outside at my house with the skin on for the past week. Monday and tuesday the temps ranged from 39-57 and the rest of the week below was below 39. Do you think the meat is still ok?

Remington model 1911 R1.....Made right here in Ilion NY http://www.1911r1.com/

Wow am I glad I did a search for this subject. I also have Lyme disease, and I was looking for something like this. Its almost sounds too good...oderless, last through mutiple washings, and kills ticks not just repels them
-
Watch for rashes that look like a bullseye anywhere on your body. I had one, and luckily I went to the doctors to get it checked out....Turned out I had lyme disease. Since I caught it early (blood test), they were able to treat it with antibiotics. It might have some effects later in life with my joints, but I guess ill have to wait and see.

Does anyone know how to get GPS coordinates from these maps? I was talking to a logger not to long ago, and he said they use hand held GPS to find boundary lines. Im not looking for exact locations, I just don’t want to be hunting on other people’s land

I was looking through the NYS website about filing a tax greivence, and stumbled across this. Its an online tax map, that has a lot of great info. This link goes to the Herkimer county maps, but you could do a search for GIS maps for your county. All you have to do is scroll in to zoom into your area. Use the option in the upper right hand of your screen to turn on the satellite view. Once you are looking at a parcell of land, simply click on it, and it will tell you the property owner....Give it a minute as the system works slow http://webmap.jws.com/taxmap/viewer.aspx?JWSCONFIG=NY_Herkimer

Don't go pointing fingers at the locals unless you have hard evidence of who is trespassing.

When Alsheimer predicts the rut and gives the best days to hunt...is that actually the "seeking and chasing" or the breeding time? I would think the best time to hunt would be during the seeking phase. During the "peak rut" you would think the bucks have the doe held up waiting to breed, which causes less movement Im not debating the theory or if it works or not.....but what is the "Best time to hunt"?
-
In 6s I have not heard of any bucks chasing yet. I have a few days of vaction left, and I am waiting to see some kind of sign before I put in for them.

Last year we saw and shot more coyotes than deer....Something aint right about that

First of all, I can not post in the Gear forum for some reason, so ill post this hear. Im looking for a blaze orange hunting beanie similar to an Under Armour hat. During regular season I do a lot of still hunting and deer drives where there are a lot hills and ravines. Im looking for something just like the Under Armour beanie, but does not cost $35 dollars to be shipped to my house from bass pro shop. It seems like all the blaze orange hats I find are the cheap knitted ones that are as big as a football helmet.

Does anyone have any experience with hunting coyotes with dogs? I have heard of a few guys around my area that do it, and I would like to know some more about it. With any hope I can get them to come over to my hunting property.

This seems like a good deal... http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?i=435302&pdesc=Gorilla_ExoTech_G30_Safety_Harness_FREE_Kong_Treestand&aID=503H1&merchID=4006

Thinking about it...My tree stand might be causing the problem. Its a hang on that does not have a folding seat. So when im standing I am kinda far from the tree. But there is no way im getting rid of this stand...It feels like your in a Lazy Boy, because the back rest is at an angle. http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/guide-gear-extreme-comfort-hang-on-tree-stand.aspx?a=546777

I was looking at a similar Gorilla vest, the EXO.....Whats the difference?? Here is a video I found when I was searching for reviews on Google http://www.bowhunting.com/videos/bowhunting-product-reviews/gorillas-exo-tech-safety-harness_864

Im looking for some advise on finding a good treestand safety harness for bow hunting. Half my shot opportunities are behind me, so I need to have free range of motion. I bought a harness a few years ago, and took it to my stand during preseason to practice shooting. I tried all kinds of adjustments, but I could not make any shots behind me due to limited range of motion.....What are you guys using?

"I remember as a kid hiking and hunting for as far as you could walk in a day and no one cared. Posted signs were the exception rather than the rule. and even property that was posted you could usually get easy access by a polite knock on the door. ...except for one place.....Any one ever hear of the George Cogar and the huge tracts of land around Schuyler NY.....no one gets on there or ever did....lol....and it is LOADED wit deer." Culvercreek, Some if not all of that land was sold and made into a upscale housing development not too long ago

It will be about 1 acre

Now what about covering the seed. I have read that I should rake it, so to cover it with no more than 1/4 of dirt. Would a york rake be ok to use?

This is the description of what I am thinking about getting AGWAY CONSERVATION GREEN Agway Conservation Green is a mixture that tolerates full sun to medium shade and is quick and easy to establish. It is an excellent choice for soil erosion control or hard to grow areas. This mixture contains 5% white clover.
-
Well I went to agway last night, and they had a lot of choices. All different choices seemed to say the same thing....good for new lawns, over seeding, covers well..ect. My lot is in an old maple harwoods, with a good amount of clay in the soil. Last summer where ever I cleared and the sun hit the ground, the weeds would grow to about 6 foot tall. I think I am going to go with the seed gives me the most bang for my buck from agway.
