The little purple boxes are a survey tool nothing more. There only purpose is to locate the beetle. They are put up by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). There are approximately 8500 traps that have been put out across the state but they are only about 6% effective and yes it is expensive. Once there is a detection a quarantine will follow. The purpose of the quarantine is to SLOW the spread not stop it. Stopping it is impossible short of a silver bullet which doesn't exist yet. The only way to save a tree is with insecticide injections which are not fees-able on a large scale but if you want to save a couple high value trees (I.E. landscape / yard trees) it is doable. You can trace the majority of infestations back to firewood. Not that im agreeing with DECs firewood regs. You can get camp wood from any back road vendor that has wood for sale and issue yourself a permit for it (the system is a joke really). http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/lands_forests_pdf/selfisscert.pdf As for it being introduced anything that is a problem is usually introduced. Historically they came from Europe and i think the majority of introductions is now coming from Asia. All the following are examples (Dutch Elm Disease, Gypsy Moth, European Corn Borer, Chestnut Blight, Japanese Beetle, Light Brown Apple Moth, Sirex Noctilio (European wood wasp), Lobesia Bartrana (European Grape Vine Moth), Asian Long horn Beetle, EAB Etc. Etc. Etc.) The list goes on and on. So keep buying cheap Asian imports. Asian Imports = wood packaging material = more invasive pests. Buy American - yes it will cost more but you will get quality products, support other Americans and keep these little SOB's out of the country. And on a personal note if you cant afford to buy American maybe you should learn to do without. By the way ALB (above in red) will make EAB look like a joke if it is not eradicated - Kiss the sugar maple good bye. As for walking away from it i hope everyone likes there village, town, county taxes going up not to mention utility bills. The removal cost for hazard trees and utility upkeep is going to be astronomical. Toledo OH is looking at around 400K this year in removal costs and its just starting. NY has about 900 million ash trees (the majority of which will not need removal) but ash was the favored street tree replacement for elm after dutch elm disease went through and NY's southern tier has the highest ash density anywhere in North America. Plus the timber industry (bat and tool handle manufacturers) will take a huge hit. just my 2 cents

My neighbor just picked up an SR71 but i haven't talked to him about shooting it yet. If i had the money i would be upgrading to a vanquish.

Just Ash Blue, Black, White and Green. No other trees are affected even mountain ash which is a different genus.

I have a large parka and bibs set that i bought 3-4 years ago for late season hunts. I don't use them nearly enough so I'm getting rid of them. They have been in the field no more than a half dozen times (none this year). The Parka features Cabela's Zone Insulation System. Articulated sleeves and low-bulk cuff design for greater freedom of movement and comfort. Front storm flap, wind-skirt and integrated hand-warmer muff provide optimal warmth. The Bibs have 200-gram Thinsulate® Supreme Insulation used throughout the bib as well as an additional 500-gram in the seat area. Two interior pockets that line up with your kidneys are specifically designed for packet-style hand-warmers to keep your core temperature up. The right armpit vent zipper is missing the pull and the clip on the hand warmer is missing (see photos). Other than that they are like new. These retail for 500$ (260 parka / 240 bibs) + shipping. Ill let them go for 350 TYD Ill see if i can get pics up later.

I got mine two years ago. They will send you the lic. in the mail. Ive got the sportsman's with a muzzelloader and bow stamp. The big problem DEC has now is that the money they got has been spent and now they have to figure out how to send the licenses and regs to everyone. When most people buy there licenses they pick up the regs books and other info where they buy the licenses. Now that information must be mailed. The article i read said its going to cost DEC about 250,000 a year to mail out all the information. By DEC law it states that the state must provide hunters, fisherman, and trappers with a copy of the regulations. So anyone who has a lifetime licenses might have to go to an issuing agent and pick up a copy because DEC does not have any money. Not that its a big deal.

Im all for better management and have never liked the points thing. I used to have 3.5yr old 6 running the farm in Madison Co. 20"+ spread. He got thumped with a slug when he was 4.5 by the neighbor and just barley had 7 "score-able points". Dressed out a hair under 200lbs. He jumped the string on me when he was 3.5 which resulted in a minor flesh wound. I knew it was the same deer the second year because of the scar. beautiful buck :'(

Hunting Traditions - What do you do during "opening week"
5.9cummins replied to burmjohn's topic in Deer Hunting
Try to stay alive. ??? Ive been shot at 3 times. I could give a hoot about rifle. Dont get me wrong i like hunting with a rifle but hunting the southern zone is insane. There are only three properties i will think about venturing out on opening day in the southerntier. Ill hunt my relatives farm in Madison Co. or my retired bosses place in Catt Co. or the neighbors property in Allegany. I hunted a new farm in Allegany last year for opener. Place was over run with pumpkins 60+ guys, wheelers running around everywhere, needless to say I'm not going back this year. -
