  1. I have been looking at black powder pistols. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with one. I'm thinking mainly to carry with me during season, not to actually "hunt" with. Here is my other question. Last bow season I had taken a shot at a doe, the shot felt great, looked great but wasn't so great. I hit her high although she dropped like a ton of bricks right where she stood when I got down from the tree she started to blat and tried standing. She was merely paralized. It took some building up courage to go hand to hand with the deer but I saw no other choice. I couldn't see standing over top of it and firing another arrow at while it was lying there on the ground, so after i weighed all my options I took out my knife and went rambo on the poor thing, cutting her neck while still perfectly alive. Maybe there was a more "humane" way of doing this but I didn't see it. Needless to say I DO NOT WANT TO HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN!!!! Things happen, unfortunately bad shots happen. Is it legal to carry a pistol for these circumstances and how do these black powder pistols perform, would anyone recommend a specific brand?
  2. I know for my neck of the woods in 5t/5g I'm right on the line. Rt.22 runs right through the center of my town. I hunt both NZ and SZ. I like the NZ because of terain, even on state land it's so mountainous and vast that there is plenty of land for deer to go ,there is less pressure from human population, houses, traffic and hunters themselves. Many hunters in this area just don't go deep enough, you could walk for days in the mountains up here. Now you go to the other side of rt.22 and it's the complete opposite. Houses, people, the huntable lands are so small, opening day sounds like the revolution gun shots everywhere. I remember last opener, in my stand I was ducking for cover because between the fowl hunters and deer hunters sunrise was open fire........and did they open fire!! Food source is far greater.....more farms etc. the North is just mountains whatever grows naturally is what they have to eat no corn fields...alfalfa fields etc.BUT I love them both for what they are. I have found my NZ hunting will yield the bigger older bucks the mountain bucks....but you earn it my friends. SZ is great for up close encounters, great bow hunting, decent bucks not quite as old BUT because of food sources still good size deer, you just hope and pray you get them before the guy hunting next door does.I get sooooo much hunting in between them both by the end of season I'm tired...I had enough....almost 3 months of solid hunting.....phew!
  3. Anyone here from 5G or 5T I am in Washington county. Just curious who is around my neck of the woods.
  4. Whitehall Ny. I get the best of both worlds with living right on the NZ/SZ line 5G/5T. I hunt from sept 27 (providing I didn't bag a buck last year) and don't stop till mid December. I hunt hard every chance I get before work for 2 hours and after work for an hour and every weekend. EVERY SECOND I can get I'm hunting. I mainly hunt private land (my own, and a buddies) and I do some mountain hunting in NZ on pubic land. In the winter I ice fish Lake George from top to bottom /Lake Champlain runs right through my back yard. I don't get a lot of fishing in warm months usually right straight out with work but when I do it's Champlain.
  5. I hunt 5G and 5T. I am in whitehall, in NZ I hunt up in dresden/black mountain area. I love it here I get the best of both worlds......the NZ/SZ line runs right through the middle of town! on one side of the road is N and the other side is S.
  6. Hey guys good to be back and see all these familiar "faces". Any who I am looking for a good used bow preferably ready to hunt, 29-31" draw...60-70 lb for my nephew who has expressed interest in bow hunting this season. He's not new to hunting but never been in the field with a bow. He's actually quite a natural.....He has been shooting my bow this summer, It fits him well, he's a great shot and super excited. If anyone here has or knows someone who has a decent bow setup and ready for a decent price PLEASE let me know. I am just as excited to have another member in the ranks of bow hunting as he is to be a part of it!
  7. I've been looking for the empire hunting forum for a month now with no luck! Seasion is upon us shortly and I have been sooooooo wrapped up in riding my new motorcycle that I've been away from the game to long. I was Muzzy on the other forum and I see alot of familiar names here. I'm so glad someone took up the site so we all can still share or adventures. THIS IS FANTASTIC!! GOOD TO BE BACK!
