  1. Some A hole shot at a life size cement buck I have in front of my house last night. I just got a call from my wife that my 3 year old just came in the house with a really short arrow (crossbow from what I can figure without seeing it) said he found it sticking out of the ground under the deer. Thing is I live in the village on a normal every day city street, so at some point during the night some D!&k shot his x bow at this thing (it is a monster....Picture perfect 12 point racker, BIG body). Never fails there is always some one out there to break rules and endanger lives, good thing he didn't shoot over the top of it he would have launched one right through my neighbors living room window!
  2. Good luck with that ....I have told deer the same thing and every time I'm left sitting by myself, They never stay true to their word. I'm gonna try to get a hand shake on it next time.
  3. I am a carpenter by trade kind of a jack of all, there is no area of construction I have not been in or can't do. I settled into drywall and taping (thats where I made the most money). 7 years ago I went in on a business venture with my father selling used cars (modern and vintage) we both share a passion for cars. All my life I have been in the shop turning wrenches on our own hotrods and antiques now we both own a small 40 car car lot in vermont just over the NY/VT border. www.borderviewauto.com
  4. My girlfriend wanted to start shooting bow. I had a Bear Whitetail Hunter last season, For me it set to it's max which I believe was 65 lbs. That bow is as easy as s#%t to adjust so I simply backed it down to the lowest setting and let her go at it. For some reason I don't think the poundage on the old whitetail hunter is very accurate because the 65 lbs on that one seemed a lot easier than the 65 lbs on my new one, maybe it's just the design, but needless to say it was a good start for her and she lost interest VERY quickly. The first 4:30 A.M wake up she realized she wasn't a fan of hunting!
  5. I have this argument all the time with the wife, She's the type when she's hot she doesn't just go bump it down a wee bit she shuts it right off! Now by the time I realize it's off it's 50 in there. I think I use less fuel just maintaining a certain temp (my magic number is 67) then I do turning down and up and down and up. I think about it like this .....If I lower it to say 60 the furnace runs longer to get it back to 67 then it does to just keep it 67. Just my way of thinking could be wrong but it's what feels right to me.
  6. Ya sorry to hear that! I bring a multi bleat and grunt tube with me, my father in law HATES it! "Leave at thing at home" he'll say "all that thing does is scare the deer AWAY", I don't know but I've had so little success with it that I often think he's right. Last year I had shot a doe that I swear I called in, Maybe it was perfect timing maybe it was pure dumb luck but whatever I shot it hitting a bleat. Then there are guys who swear by it, grunt big bucks in every day. T.v obviously makes it look easy and VERY effective. Needless to say I don't use them often at all, I very reluctant to use mine, maybe for the best I don't know.
  7. There is a mechanism I read about in the Sept. issue of Outdoors magazine, It's called Drawloc. There are special laws in effect to allow disabled bow hunters to use this. More info can be found on their website...www.drawloc.com. All I did was read the article, there is also a number of dealers in NY- Cougar sports, Ardsley ny, flying arrow sports, carmel ny, outfitter plus, dennemora ny, flying arrow in Albany and On the spot Archery, Shelburne ny. check it out looks interesting for the disabled.
  8. I guess the question is what makes some darker than others? Any guesses, thoughts??
  9. I was talking with a guy and he was telling me the bucks he's seeing have really dark horns, almost brown. Anyone know what causes this? Food maybe?
  10. Well I am sad to report my bow hunting season is OVER!!!!! I can't waste any more time in these woods! Once I heard of this logging going on I moved 2 stands to a far corner of the property where there was no trees marked for harvest, set up a camera and had deer! different days different times a couple bucks (one of them was a dandy) and a million does. Now my cams are showing nothing. I assume they're feeding on the browes and all the drop acorns but I can't very well hunt these areas while the loggers are there and I can't figure which direction they're coming from or going to. I have talked to so many loggers around my area and every single one of them said "oh I've shot the biggest bucks of my life right off my skidder" or "oh the sound of the chain saw is a dinner bell sh!t I'd fire the saw up and set it on the ground next to me, they come a runnin!" BULLS#!T!!!!!!! The amount of time I have in my stand to see one deer is not normal to say the least but like I say I can't have the stand placement if these loggers are running around from one end to the other. The landowner says they'll be done in 3-4 weeks! So that brings me into gun season, so I've sadly decided to put the bow up spend the remainder in the north and go back with the gun when they pull out. It kills me to give up and put the bow away but I feel like I'm spinning my wheels.
  11. I had a 5 pointer come in at last light over the weekend 25 yards broad side, drew back he looked up! Now I'm in full draw in a staring contest with him......starting to feel the shake coming on he takes 2 steps back still looking at me I decide to let it fly....I believe that was the first time I've seen a deer jump an arrow! It was either let it fly or let him spook off. I KNOW it wasn't me, the release felt as good as ever, I watched him tense up and right over his back it flew!
  12. 4 for me and I was worried it was over kill and unnecessary. But I always figure "reserves" for murphy's. My quiver holds 3 in front and 3 in back with field points but only 4 with broad heads, so I keep 3 new arrows and heads in front and the arrow that took my first bow kill last season in back ( idk I'm strange like that, you should have met me in my high school football days)
  13. I will tell you this........A buddy of mine shot a deer with the bow 2 years ago, hit him exactly where you describe you did. It was a single lung shot. We tracked that deer for all day, he shot it first light, He text me on the phone he had a buck down about 9:30 so there was more than 2 hours between shot and the start of tracking. He thought for sure he had a dbl lung ( no pass through) GREAT blood, lots of it! We tracked and tracked and tracked crossed neighboring properties (yes got permission) finally we come to the end of blood MILES away but couldn't find the deer ANYWHERE! We decided to go home and call a local guy here in the area who had tracking dogs (does mostly people tracking and such) brought the dogs to last blood and let em do their thing......they had that deer in MINUTES! He was stuffed under a blow down covered in the thickest S#$T you ever did see. It cost us a donation he gave $50 for that 30 minutes of dog tracking but it was worth every penny of it! But anyways it was a one lunger and it was ugly and nasty and that deer ran ALL day, piled up probably 25 times but he went a long ways and we never would have got him if not for those dogs! Definitely do not hesitate to use deer search or find a guy local (there are a lot of guys with tracking dogs you'd be surprised) and call them when you have to! $50 was a small price to pay for a recovered deer and getting rid of that knot in your stomach! So what did happen anyways????
  14. I'm starting to get pretty frustrated! I haven't seen anything! O not true I've hunted a farm the last week because my other property I hunt is a disaster from logging and they don't take a day off! I went in opening morning and sat ....about 9:30 I heard the skidder start up and a way they went, long story short every tree dropping sounded closer and closer till finally I look over my shoulder and there is a tree falling 50 yrds from me!!!!! Sooooo I left that ended my day! I then got permission to hunt this farm and it is nice for deer, problem is I'm on the ground hunting these field edges I see deer in EVERY night/evening and saw nothing untill........I'm walking out of this one field to my truck and there are 3 deer standing in the other field I usually see them in in the a.m. so I figure they must have been on to me and scurried across the road, grrrrrrrrr i have yet to see a deer I could even put binos on let alone put in my sights! BUT it's early yet i guess.
  15. Ya thanks ....It's amazing how an extra 10 yards will make you feel like it's the first time picking up a bow ( me anyways) I've never had the need for more than 20, now it's like I've never shot a bow before, I think maybe some of it is psychological....It looks far and feels far and kind of been intimidated by such a shot I'm still not really comfortable but now is as good a time as any to learn. I will be ready for it come Saturday. The landowner just stopped in as I was typing this reply and informed me the wood market is going down so they're seriously considering shutting down operations for a bit till the price comes back up, This is a good thing. Last weekend I stopped and asked the loggers where they thought they'd be saturday and when till when, they did plan on being in there during the day but on the other side of the hill. I'm going to pray my tush off that they decided to pull out and go back to NH before this weekend!
  16. I went to change out cards in the camera and move a couple stands due to the logging in progress. This was the first time I'd been there since they began.......WHAT A MESS!!! They are leaving all the tops and it looks like a war zone! I did find an amazing spot that I can't believe I didn't scope out last year. I moved a stand here to this location, Thing is it's probably gonna leave me a 30 yard shot, There is opportunity for closer but because of where I had to put it up for cover I'm gonna be ready for a 30 yard shot. I have never really practiced this distance so I spent sunday doing just that....it was frustrating. I'm dead on at 20 once I move back another 10 yrds it's not so dead on. So I practiced till I got pissy then took a break and went back to shooting till once again I got frustrated and had to quit, I destroyed 2 arrows and one practice blade Muzzy. Yesterdays practice went much better, Hopefully today goes better than yesterday but I'm going to keep at it all week. Other than that stands are up cameras are out and I'll pull the cards thursday, camo is out hanging, gear is all packed up and I'm ready to go! This is what we've been waiting for boys! Good luck to all and be safe!
  17. BIG FAN!!!! I have always had a big problem with the hunting shows today. There is not one channel you can turn to and see average people hunting average deer with average equipment. I like you can't afford a week trip to Texas so I can shoot a 200 class trophy, I believe ANY deer taken with a bow is a trophy. I say all the time if any of these guys on these hunting shows came up in my neck of the woods to hunt for a week they'd be shooting 4's and 6ers OR going home empty handed. Your show is reality, and I love it! This is what hunting shows should be .....informational, informative and REAL. NICE JOB keep the cameras rollin. Real life hunting with real life people. Oh by the way how did that bordercrossing work?
  18. Huh, ya good point, I've never done it during that time (i'm usually on to ice fishing then) but it sounded like he had an idea but I can see why it wouldn't work too. If I had em figured out I'd be rich and famous!
  19. Does everyone have to log in EVERY time you go on page or is it just me? I have forever selected I don't stay logged in once I leave the page, when I come back I have to do log in again. Me or no?
  20. Have you seen the deer huntinig NAP spitfires? there is a thread the shows the exit wound CRAZY! http://huntingny.com/forums/index.php/topic,1641.0.html
  21. I talked with a guy for about 3 hours on a car trip about hunting, and one thing he does that I don't do is scout his deer (trails, hangs/moves stands etc.) in december and january, snow on the ground so the trails they use DURING hunting season are visible. He can tell how heavy they are traveled, direction, bedding is easier to find and you can tell where they paw for food during the later months. Im not sure why this never occurred to me as a PRIME TIME to scout, It makes perfect sense. Any one else use this down time to scout trails and strategy?
  22. I haven't. I've seen them and it looks like it would work. I know I've wasted $10.00 before.
  23. LMAO! Luckily there wasn't a whole lot there to pull on!! I do have one hella headache from the wall though!
  24. I'm as ready as I'll ever be. I did want to change one stand probably do that tonight or tomarrow. I try to stay out of my hunting grounds for a couple weeks before but they're logging anyways so I may as well go on in. Luckily no logging on the weekend so I'm good for sat and sun I took monday off but we'll see if I need to (hopefully not!) I've talked with 4-5 loggers in my area (there is a pile of them in my area) and everyone said hunting will be great! Hope they are right!
  25. Well turns out you win!!!! I had my father in law come over and watch me, he took a piece of thread and marked the string (kisser) then fired and repeated, with this "new" bow I just got from him the draw and handling is way different than I was used with the whitetail hunter I shot last year. By the time I shot a dozen arrows I had 8 different pieces of thread on the string! I have it straightened out now .... shot and shot and shot found my spot and put a kisser on. Now I'm consistent with my draw anyways. sights are sighted in and dead on! quiver has been replaced, and I'm practicing every chance I get with this bow.
