  1. Two for one....

What do you guys wear during the early season when it still is 60+ degrees alot of the time?

Do you concern yourselves with the scent of leather boots?

I have Danner Pronghorns but they are 400g and I sweat. I've worn them during these warmer times instead of my rubber boots as they are 800g and are not an option.

I've contemplated sneakers, just curious as we approach the 10/1 opener (Yes, it is still my opener).

  2. I too want to here the feedback! I was down that way for work some years ago now and saw an absolute monster buck (rack and body) in the headlights one morning. Enough that I turned around for a closer look.

Good luck, I wonder when it was last hunted legally?

Thanks I will try the dry brine for sure.  My brother went to school with Danny Miller in lowville.  We used to stop there and get steaks for camp all the time. Nice place.

I will be up there at least one day this season for a still hunt for the day.

I come from outside Albany, but the guys who come from the north stop and get steaks, jerked pork, burgers, etc. Never eat better than when at camp!

I can't say I've had a ton of success up there in my 16 years, but we have a ton of fun and I have preferred hunting there more than other more fruitful locations.

Miller's is def great!  I might take a deer there this year even though it's an hour away.

Did the independence come back?  35 years ago it was great and then for quite a while couldn't hardly buy brookie out of there.  Used to fish the Sperryville area and once I got 2 - 14" brookies out of the same hole. Beautiful stream.  Spent a lot of time on Otter, Crystal and Sunday creeks too.  My Dad had a camp on Chase lake.

If you haven't had it, I love Millers' dry brine and put it on red meat, poultry, and pork. It never gets old to me.

I've been going up there for 16 years and the old timers who are all gone now always said the Independence was second to none as a brook trout fishery years ago. It definitely went downhill as I'm told, but we still have decent luck, but my experience is that you have to put in some effort. The days of setting up on the creek bank and catching your limits seem to be a thing of the past. Definitely some picturesque spots on the Independence. Cold crossing it in November though haha.

We are east of Stony Lake.

What town you in I also hunt the independence river wild forest in lowvillle. Miller's meat market an Eddie's and croghan meat market are great.

Agreed! The Independence is a property line at the camp i belong to. Love fishing it and I've hunted the Wild Forest quite a bit in recent years.

Nice bear as well! Love a well cooked bear roast!

  6. I feel much better now after having done a proper shooting lane cut over the last week at my stands.

Have been shooting almost daily for a month (shot 1x/2x a week in July and Early August) and dialed the BH in over the weekend as well. Plan to shoot from the treestand in the yard a little more frequently leading up to the opener.

Good luck all, its coming fast!

I kinda feel your pain a little I'm a 32 inch draw and I rarely get to shoot a bow at my draw length before I buy. I would say since your so new shoot as many bows as you can and don’t let the name on the bow persuade you to buy . Buy the one that feels the best to YOU when you shoot it. The biggest thing to get right is the draw length for you no matter the manufacturer. You really can’t buy a bad bow anymore their all quality now .

Thanks for the advice. My more seasoned buddies have said the same about shooting many different bows. I have a dealer I can go to locally so that helps. I want to get through this fall and then start looking a little more seriously. Good luck this year!

My oldest son still shoots a reflex bighorn, I bought it for his 16 birthday ( he’s 27 now) . I’ve said to him you could upgrade and his response is always why,  i shoot it great and it’ll kill deer  just as easy as a new one .

This will be my 3rd year with it. Bought for $100 with new strings and HHA 4 pin. Been a deal so far. My buddy from work wants to sell me his Hoyt Nitrum 34 after a recent upgrade of his own, but I am admittedly still very ignorant to what's what in the bowhunting world. My brother who is experienced loves his Elite and I know the big names like Hoyt, Matthews, etc. but haven't shot enough bows to really be knowledgeable. I'm a lefty so that doesn't help.

  9. Might not use them all but my setups are:

Bow - Reflex Growler, Victory arrows tipped with Montec G5 broadheads. (newer to bowhunting, but may upgrade next year)

XBow - Centerpoint Sniper 370 topped with Nikon Prostaff P3 glass, shooting pile drivers with Montec G5's as well.

Rifle - JM Marlin 30-30 topped with Leupold VX2 3X9 glass. Shooting Remington Corelokt 170gr.

ML - 50 cal. CVA inline with fiber optic sights, T/C Mag Express Sabots 240gr., 2 pellets (Hodgdon) with CCI primers. I guess this would be an old school setup by many standards today. The ML must be older as it has a bolt for the primer rather than a break. Shoots straight though. Haven't hunted the northern early ML in years though due to kids always having softball tournaments. I miss that week.

  10. My personal experience:

I have been in an ADK club as a paying member since 2004. 1000+ acres and 7 landowners. Least dense deer numbers in the state. The club has withstood the test of time since shortly after WWII. There is a bit of an unwritten pecking order mostly based upon the amount of work those at the top actually put into the camp. I think people understanding that, being respectful, and lending a helping hand are key factors in a club's success. I'm the only "city" boy in this club and catch crap for it constantly, but i have earned their respect out of shear willingness to learn and pitch in with any and all chores. Some guys are skilled carpenters, loggers, electricians, engineers, etc. and can do things I simply can't. So I take pride in ensuring the miles and miles of trails we have are cleared as are the paths to their stands. Mae sure the firewood is cut, split, and stacked as a couple examples.

There have been people that come and go and definitely some issues amongst members but the key is recognizing that no one person or click of guys is above the club. For example, I wont shoot a 4 or less buck unless my family was starving. I have done so in the past, just choose not to at this point in my life. Many guys will shoot the first 3" legal buck they see. While I don't necessarily agree with their choices, I know they want the meat before anything else and who am i to pass judgement. Seeing the big picture rather than my short term hunting goals is more important, ie. the friendships, the memories, the card games etc. Example: As deer drives are becoming a thing of the past, some of my fondest memories are getting the older guys out to sit on some watches while we bust some brush trying to get one of them a deer.

In my opinion, too many people today like to speak before spoken to and that never ends well...

  11. Saw a bear this June at my house in Slingerlands, NY. Likely a 1.5 YO who just got the boot from Mom is commonplace around here every year.

However, my cams just snapped a few pics of either the same or another one on 8/3. Hard to tell as he was trying to eat the cams as they love to do.

Anyone have similar experiences with bears sticking around a more Suburban than rural setting this far into the summer? I never expected to see one around this late. Thought it was cool.

Well we shall see how much backbone and conviction she has and I hope she stands by what she said back then, that is how I measure a person, taking a stand for what the Hell you believe in! Kirsten Gillibrand had the same type of talking points before she was anointed Senator and look what happened to her, anti gun libtard through and through!

    Al

Hochul and Gillibrand appear to be cut from the same cloth. Hochul has changed her stance on issues important to many of us on this site. It was a decade ago when the NRA and others supported her and she has flip flopped on various pieces of legislation since. This would include now supporting illegal aliens having driver licenses when  she was publicly against this when Spitzy tried to get  it passed. Not outdoors related, but a good example.

  13. My oldest has her lifetime and completed the hunter safety course last year. Do you know how i would go about getting her tags for this initial season of hers? I'm assuming bring her BC (not driving age) and safety course certificate to any place that sells licenses?

  14. This has become my favorite off season thread! I've been dabbling here and there for the last couple years, learning how to do my DD and watch how and sometimes why the market moves day to day with stocks I am interested in. Without investing a penny, i learned MEME stocks aren't for me.

Has anyone looked at HOFV? I have some friends that are in under $3.00 and believe it has huge upside. Curious as to the thoughts here.

I like ELY (Callaway) long and JD intrigues me as well, but I'm concerned with it being a Chinese company.
