  1. what is the action that makes us a deer hunter vs a turkey hunter? If you aren't in possession of a deer carcass tag would that suffice?
That's something you'd have to hash out with the officer obviously. If you can prove to him you were only turkey hunting and he believes you then you'd be all set probably...

  2. They aren't idiots, they also don't have ESP. I know guys that hunt with a bow and a shotgun for turkeys in the spring. carry both to a blind. so what magical action of having any of the three listed would make you a deer hunter vs a turkey hunter?
Because you can't hunt deer in the spring would be my first guess...???

  3. I could see that they could ticket you once you did "actively pursue a deer. ie shot at one or actually took one. Since both the bow and crossbow are legal implements for taking turkey it would seem you could walk into the woods with a bow, crossbow and a shotgun loaded with shot and crawl into a blind to call turkey if you wanted.

If you are actively pursuing turkeys then you probably could get away with that... "Actively pursuing" is not when you take a shot or kill one... Actively pursuing means hunting, we all know that, let's not twist the words to mean what we want to hear. Let's not pretend these officers are idiots either, most are hunters and fisherman just like us.

  4. Just thought I'd give another update on the matter of carrying a crossbow while deer hunting before the 2 week season. I went online and asked the DEC central dispatch this very question. "Is it legal to possess a crossbow afield while deer hunting before the 2 week crossbow deer season for the use of turkey hunting.?"

I just got off of the phone with a Sargeant at the DEC Central dispatch, he called me regarding the email. He then described the very same reason the other DEC officer I talked to.

"You are actively pursuing a deer while in possession of an implement with which is illegal to take deer during the current season." He told me that the full gamut of rules has not been detailed in the hunting regulations guide for crossbow use but this is no different than carrying a firearm while bowhunting. He reiterated that the way the seasons are currently laid out this is ILLEGAL.

If anyone would care to ask the same question or any other questions I'll gladly give the phone number to the DEC central Dispatch and you can hash out your disagreements with them, after all they are the very people you'll be talking to if you get caught... I was and am not pointing fingers at anyone but simply clearing up shady areas in law that none of us were too clear on.

  5. Now YOU said this wasn't the time nor place for this yet here you are putting words in my mouth..NEVER ONCE did I say I was unsure. I said s how me the written regulation for I have read that regulation book umpteen times and no where does it state that.. You also said I didn't like your answer..Well I never asked a question. You gave no real answer for you have shown nothing to back what you say up..I have clearly said I've read the regulations. Logically this indicates anyone can go and look up the regulations and see if I'm correct in there being No such written rule for fall turkey cross bows and bow season compounds or traditional gear being in the field at the same time..I  have a valid turkey license , I have a valid archery license. They are legal weapons..Now to your analogy..anyone with a shot gun in fall turkey could slide in a slug and shoot a deer...Omg can you imagine?!
Call the DEC. I'm done with your nonsense.

  6. I don't see how it could be legal for me to carry essentially a shotgun and a rifle for 2 different game species "deer and grouse" and it not be legal for grow to carry a bow and an Xbow for 2 different game animals.

Because there's no law stating you can't hunt grouse with a 30-30. And obviously there's no edge to be gained by using a 20ga. Birdshot load for deer (obviously it's illegal). Can't you see where a conflict of interest would arise when suddenly you can start carrying your crossbow along (deer hunting) for 2 weeks before crossbow deer is legal? You can't carry a rifle along with your bow for varmints right? Why? Same reason.
I'm not saying that I wrote this law or I have all of the answers for it. A question arose about legality which I as well as others assumed was illegal and I verified it through an active DEC officer. I'm not even saying some officers wouldn't see the laws different, I asked, I got an answer. Grow didn't like my answer, acknowledged she wasn't sure and said until she sees it in print she's going to ignore it. She could easily call someone herself and see what her local officer thinks of the situation but then you can't play the "I didn't know card"...

  7. I'll have to find it but I have a old email response from a Eco stating it is legal for me to carry my savage model 24 "30-30 over 20ga" loaded with a 30-30 round as well as a game load in the 20ga barrel. Im sure it is another terribly written law left to the discretion of the officer but that is my experience.

I don't see what the issue with your gun setup would pose as long as there is a deer rifle season open while carrying it. You couldn't carry that gun during an open deer season where rifles weren't allowed obviously. I'm not sure what situation youre using this particular gun but there are certainly going to be exceptions depending.

I won't get into this with you Other than to say I have talked to officers in 3 different regions on specific laws and got 3 different answers...Now I went back for the 5 or 6th time and read all the regulations printed for hunters...words are important..it is illegal to take a deer...no where does it say to possess ...It states clearly in a couple of place it is illegal, to take an animal. Now they are specific on the carrying of certain calibers and rim fires during certain season and areas...there are several area  specific restrictions...So all this said, your officer friend needs to mail you specific written regulations that says, specifically it is illegal to carry  both weapons during legal hunting seasons...for I am in two legal hunting season right now and no where...let me say this again no where does it state you can not hunt two different animals at the same time during their respective seasons .. This written regulation had best be widely and easily available for viewing...then I won't carry both..
Then continue to break the law and play ignorant, it's your ticket, not mine. You as well as others were unsure on this so I contacted a LEO that I know and he said it is definitely not legal. You're "actively" pursuing a game animal while in possession of an illegal weapon for taking said animal... The same reason we can't carry firearms while bowhunting. Can you take your shotgun with you bowhunting in case you see a turkey?? No. To act like you see where this is not whatsoever a conflict of interest is asinine. It seems if you were unsure on this yourself (which you are) then you would call a DEC officer yourself to make sure you aren't violating any game laws. Maybe you'll get lucky and yours will say you can. If you want to start a p**sing match because you dislike me we can do it in a thread. Otherwise, this isn't the thread to hash this out. You got an answer, you didn't like it... Period.

  9. Thought that may be the case as well. Now we know   Can I have a .22 rifle during regular gun season to shoot squirrels while deer hunting ? Not that I plan on it but curious   Or can I carry 2 ML's during ML season ?
I'm not sure on the 2 muzzleloaders but I'd assume not. I don't think a revolver muzzleloader is legal either if I remember correctly. I can carry a sidearm with me while gun hunting so I'd assume you'd be safe with a 22 for squirrels? It's not like you're going to choose to shoot deer with a 22 while you're carrying a rifle/shotgun. The bow/crossbow thing is like goose hunting for instance, coyote and goose season is open at the same time but you can't be in possession of buckshot while goose hunting because it's an illegal implement for the species you're targeting (in case you see a coyote)...

  10. Yes it is compound for  deer cross bow for turkey. ..I couldn't find where it was illegal to have both as long as I'm not shooting a deer with the cross bow . If it is my bad because I've been bring both for a few falls....cross bow is legal for fall turkey.
I just confirmed with my friend who is a DEC officer and it is illegal to have both weapons with you. You are actively deer hunting while in possession of an illegal weapon to use for deer hunting. You can only have one or the other. I too thought this was the case and I wanted to confirm first...

  11. I love the Barnes Expander MZ's, muzzleloading projectiles can be tricky to get proper performance, all projectiles are made to perform in a certain velocity range and it seems everyone uses different loads/powders. That being said I've shot a lot of different ones and the Barnes are my favorite for accuracy and penetration. I've shot powerbelts, hated them, I've shot the SST's, they weren't too bad, and various other Walmart specials. They all killed the deer but didn't always exit or expand. I only shoot 100 grains of white hots for powder. I'll probably jump to 150 someday and see what difference I see on deer but 100 has never let me down, then again I've never shot a deer over 75 yds I don't think with my muzzy...

  12. Freeze whole front shoulder muscles (separated) for jerky, when you're ready for jerky take one out let it defrost for a bit and slice it while it's still partly frozen, it's much easier to get proper thickness.

  13. I'm not sure if you clean your barrel after sighting in but out of my muzzleloaders I have a noticeable impact difference between a fouled and a clean barrel, like 4-6" difference. I always sight in, clean it and shoot one more round to foul the barrel before hunting. Give it a try next time and I bet you see an impact difference...

  14. They'll just stop putting the name "Rage" anywhere on or in the package. I'm sure the people that would be detecting this have no knowledge of what a trademarked rage is let alone care. But just in case I'm ordering a bunch...

  15. To those who are upset about the prospects of full inclusion, this map posted by WNYBH may be of interest.  The black state of Oregon would be a good place to consider a move to.   I have spent some time in that state and it is pretty nice.  They have Mt. Hood & the Timberline Lodge, some cool lumber museums, the Leatherman factory, in addition to one of my favorite lunch spots in the lower 48 (the Tippy Canoe near the Columbia river), and great beer.  The scenery runs a close second to NY's Adirondacks.  In addition to whitetails, they have blacktails, mule deer, and elk.  The fact that they are the only state where crossbow's are illegal to hunt with, probably means that it will be many years before you need to worry about them infringing on archery season.
I think it is important for those of us who are for full inclusion to provide some hope and comfort for you folks in your time of dispair.   Oregon may be the answer.

For someone with such a connection to God and the moral high ground you certainly have no problem telling anyone that disagrees with your opinion to move to the other side of the country...? What happened to tolerance? I guess maybe instead of provoking and whining maybe YOU should move to a state with full inclusion! How about that?

  16. I too have a wide assortment of brands, I've always like scent blocker apparel, the material, cut, comfort has always been spot on for me. Cabela's is equally as good if not better in my opinion, I've never not liked a single Cabela's brand product. Under Armour is good stuff too but I still refuse to pay $80 for a hoody so I grab most of it on clearance. I used to spend a ton of money buying expensive clothes that have cool looking patterns etc, I didn't notice any difference in performance other than you look expensive. Scent control is far more important than camo pattern.

  17. Keep supporting China!! Our grandkids will have to speak Chinese! The reason they are so cheap is they stole the R&D as well as the technology to make and make slaves make them...........

    Off my soapbox. fire away.....
You're supporting China whether you buy them from China direct or buy them in a "Rage" package. If it saves me $14 per broadhead I'll think I'll cut out the "middle man" which is the Rage company. All of the Rage marketing and sponsorships will do just fine without my money too...

    Off my soapbox.

  18. My Chinadermics have a coyote and a doe under their belt so far this year and both performed as good as the real deal. No broken/chipped blades, shock collars broke as intended, still feel sharp (even though I won't reuse them for $1 each I'll just buy more and use the spent heads on squirrels etc...
