  1. Thanks folks for your response. To answer some of your questions. I do not plan to reload yet but I may do so later after I get some empty brass built up to reload with. I do have a friend that has a 270 Winchester and he does his own reloads. I can used his bench anytime. My interest now is to purchase a good in general factory premium ammunition that you 270 Winchester people more then often favor for deer hunting. The reason i dropped down from the 7mm to the 270 winchester is to reduce recoil effects because of the 270,s lighter grain bullets, also this caliber is a yet flat shooter like the 7mm. i no longer hunt the big bigger game. The area,s in general where I hunt now averages 75yds. out 150 yds. max. I have been looking at the 140gr sst Hornady and also The Winchester ammo. 140gr. power max Bonded PHP and Winchester 140gr.accubond . these had good reviews for medium size game. The Hornady sst 140gr. design I favored the best. So I hope this answers all your questions on what my thought were. again guys, i really appreciate you help here. Froggy After I settle on a good factory load, I can begin to run in the rifle lands at the range. Clean , shoot, clean, shoot, clean , shoot for a total of 20 rounds. Then she will be run in.
  2. Could you folks advise me on the best winchester 130gr cartridge load to use on deer hunting in 270 winchester ? Just traded in my savage 111 7mm on a remington 783. wanted to step a little bullet grain weight down yet maintain flat trajectory. There presently is on line at Gander Mountain this model on sale for $269.00. in 270 or. 06 caliber.3 days only this week . Also $40.00 rebate you mail in. appreciate, Froggy [email protected]
  3. This is a funny thing to me that happened. Was hunting squirrels and grouse on a friends posted land. Beautiful fall day, clear and sunny . i always walk a foot trail and still hunt these varmints. In this area I have always seen grays and taken some grouse. The trail is slightly inclined and lots of open trees . you could see real good. Also on either side of the trail there is brushy stuff. In places it is hard to walk through. Before I type what happened, I would like to say from hunting these birds I have learned that these grouse are real smart. but being smart got this bird killed. While still hunting slowly up this trail, my lower bowel told me it had to take a dump or number 2. So I figured it was best to get off the trail a ways to do my duty. i turned right off the trail and went in a ( little) ways where I found a appropriate spot to squat. I dropped my pants and boxers, set my Moosberg 500 pump 12 ga shotgun on the ground next to me I no sooner got into the push mode when a grouse flew across the trail that i had just left right into my face. scared the hell out of me.The grouse flared and I swung my arms up startled. The bird flashed over me and went down on the ground fast walking through the brush behind me. still in a squat position , I picked up my 12ga pump and let him have it with a head shot. Grouse will do this quite often. you walk by them and sometimes they quietly follow behind you .Oh , I did not fall backwards into the el- crappo.
  4. Tio, All barrels from the same manufactured model gun you purchased will have a micro-twinge of a difference with where they pattern a slug. I would recommend for you to try different slug types with this new shotgun. Eventually you will find one she really shoots best for you. Being a rifled barrel I would try the remington rifled slug as a starter suggestion. You can work around to other different brands as you go till you find the one that she shoots best. Being in this sport for many a years, I have learned from myself and others complaints on whats wrong with this shotgun or their rifle.. It,s looseing it,s accuracy or does not shoot like she used to.The best tip that I learned from my friend gunsmiths is over time you get lead build up in the rifle lands. Even after you think that barrel you cleaned is clean, well it truly is not. there is always some remaining lead somewhere in the rifleing. what i am saying here is be sure you get the lead out between different slug types you try. good luck tio.
  5. You made a excellent purchase the Mossberg 500 pump. We have two of these in our family. I have taken many a deer with the one I use. I shoot open sights only. Best all around accuracy and instant knock down was the basic Remington 1 ounce slug that I continue to use today. Any good placed shot that I have made with this slug over the years dumps the deer where it stands. I made a behind the shoulder shot that a 6 point came up right in back of me from about 20 yards. He wheeled away and ran 25 to 30 yrds. into the woods and folded. Turns out I was ( up wind ) of the buck but I had saturated my watch with Tinks 69 doe extrus scent.Stuff really works. That buck must have been awful horny.
  6. Just so you know my area I live in Watertown , N.Y. or Dec. 6G. Retired senior here with 50 years in the hunting sport. Have trapped muskrats, beaver and hunted woodchucks, ducks . marsh chickens, fox, shunks ,woodcocks, deer, pheasant and grouse. Fell through the ice one time while trapping with my buddy. I was in the Clayton Calumet Hunting club for 24 years.biggest buck in my life time was a 9 point near Cameron N.Y. area 8t. Funny thing is, I shot him in his bed.One time deer hunting in the open I was sitting on watch and there was a 8 point buck bedding 20 feet behind me.there was cut down short tree stumps and soft field grass on this hill.Did I get him ? No, but i jumped him and could have broke my gun over his back.. He never showed horns till he got running in front of me.Saw where he went and our club got him the next day. I do not want to give the impression there is a overload of experience in the above paragraph. But i am here to also learn, to help , to chat and meet new friends. and oh yes, to tell stories I have had happen to me in the world of hunting. froggy
