  1. To tell you the truth guys I really do not know what took place that day and that what make,s it bazaar to me. What I,m saying is, I have killed and filled many tags in previous years before this happened to me. I know how to line up gun sights correctly to hit where I aim. I know what it is to pull a shot and this I did not do. I would have said to myself, crap, dammit ect... Between me and the doe there was no tree,s, twigs or anything just open air. I did not experience any hunting fever because I would have known if I did. It was simply just another hunting shot at a deer so I could fill my tag. Before I even shot, thoughts went through my mind, Don,t mess this up, take your time with the shot and aim good. this will fill my tag. I was so startled after I carefully took the shot at a broadside grazeing deer when the smoke from the gun muzzle came back over me. Crap, what ta hell , that deer,s still standing like nothing happened.I know I properly loaded this gun, I remembered I powdered, then sabot down the barrel . Than I,m thinking ok, you still can reload but be careful not to startle her. So I slowly re-loaded behind a large enough tree to hide me from the doe. The 2nd. shot was thought out the same as the first. But when I walked the short distance to where the doe lay. I was immediately surprised where the doe was hit !!!! Next day I went straight to our gun club range. useing the left over fast loads, I could not understand what took place yesterday because any shots I took were all on paper. So there it is folks , to this day when I think back on these events that happened that day with this doe, I think to myself, what did happen ??? therefore ever since then I have called it my Bermuda triangle deer hunt. We would all look at these events as told as a normal deer hunter would think happened , you hit a tree, the doe was wearing a bullet proof vest. Did I do my job right on this deer take and I say to myself, yes, you did everything right. Can a doe up close hear a gun shot ? I would say yes because if I had hit the backside of one of those tree,s out of her vision with a small tree log, i,m quite sure she would have heard it. But, that still is a good question. Maybe a deer biologist could give us some insight on this. Later, Froggy
  2. Good deer caliber and good hunting bullets. If she shoots them good the fusion rounds will do the rest for you.
  3. I just purchased a new 783 in 270 before Christmas from Gander M. First time at the gun range she shot ok on target but more than once I a had a miss load after fireing the gun. This new gun now is back at their Remington factory.
  4. This caliber will kill deer if you place the hit to destroy the heart ect.. The thing is, the caliber is so light for deer, the animal might run off and die where recovery could a big problem in finding the hit deer. Please considered useing the proper size calibers recommended for deer hunting. Put this varmint gun back in your gun rack.
  5. Sometimes a hi velocity rifle round can and has happened to people that when the round hits the shoulder bone, they have blown up. Always go for behind the shoulders to get the major organs involved , heart ect. Good Luck, Froggy ( A 270 Winchester user. )
  6. Ok, I read your responses and I wish to add my feelings to them. Wolf123 , That was so funny what happened to you with this doe that you shot behind the shoulder. I did chuckle on this hunting story. Thanks . Pulled (BOTH) shots. No shots were pulled from my memory. I aimed good each time and slowly pulled the trigger till the muzzle loader discharged on both of these shots.Remember the second shot was off of a tree rest. I wanted deer meat for the freezer. FastEddie, I totally agree with you on the 4 foot hit thing, yes I did over distance it. what was behind this statement was that I wanted to give the reader to think (why) was the aim point and actual hit so far apart ??? The statement of the military training I wrote was to say to the reader that I did have the abilities to shoot and handle a weapon correctly .. And yes ,the iron deposits in this area had to be excessive because other hunters in this area that I talked too, have had the same compass problems. These were cold shoulder remarks you made. you were not there , I was and that,s what happened. Every time I tell this story, I always get some comments back of like I saw a UFO or something. I did write at the beginning of this hunting story that what you were going to read was a bazaar event that took place to a fellow hunter. Look guys , have you not had bazaar incidents happen to you in your life that maybe you are too afraid to tell anybody about it, That they might look at you and say,.. You been eating mushrooms again. Ha Ha . I understand, but this incident took place and telling this story, I am sticking my neck out on the chopping block. And you can tell I do bleed afterwards for doing it. Still I give my deepest respects to all you guys that responded with your views no matter what, A fellow hunter, Froggy
  7. This is going to be a weird story that happened to me while hunting deer during the muzzle loading season in area 6G. Now the land I was hunting on was state land but at one time years ago the U.S. Navy was stationed there takeing up a very small area of the land. I have hunted this often and one thing that was weird was when you got back far in enough, compasses do not work. At the time this happened in my life, I was a very experience hunter who over the previous years had filled many deer tags. In the military I was a expert marksman but I cannot elaborate any further on that. Ok , i hunt with a 50 caliber Traditions muzzle loader. Before I go in the woods, I always test fire on 9" paper plates at the club range. To make sure the gun is right on target. I pre-weigh all my fast loaders. I usually carry at least 10 on me.The gun was shooting right where I wanted the sabot to hit on target. I cleaned the gun two days before the opening, went to the range and target test fired two sabots on paper. all good hits on paper. One I shot at 40yds. and the next 75yds. All was well. I am telling all this because whats going to happen after you guys read this story, some one will say, oh the gun sights were off ect.. On the opening morning, I parked my car and dressed for the occasion. Made sure I had all my gear and walked in a short distance from my parked car It was plenty daylight and the season was open.I took out one of my pre measured fast loads, checked it and then dumped in the powder. Following the powder, I started a 50cal. sabot bullet down the barrel.Rammed the round down the barrel with my ram rod.I absolutely made sure the sabot was fully seated. I have a mark on my ram rod to tell me the round is loaded fully down in the barrel. Set the gun on safety and loaded on a cap.. Ok, I walked in to where I saw a good place to sit on watch. My compass by then was not working. There was a dead fall that I was sitting on with my 1" thick hard foam seat under my butt. My view was good from where I was and of course there were tree,s here and there, some up right, some had fallen. I got very still and started my watch with my eyes scanning always looking for a deer comeing or as a hunter should o watch for deer. Now here it comes and this has always baffled me how this could happen.I looked good scanning the whole front of my watch. I looked to my left and turned my head front and you guessed it. There was a dam doe standing broadside to me straight out about 35 to 45 yds. from me. A perfect set up for a shot. I was really startled wondering where ta hell this deer came from. The doe was slowly eating grass with her head down with her side to me. Ok, I thought and very slowly raised my Muzzle loader.Got a perfect target line up on the does shoulder area. Took off the safety. Made a good aim and boom. The smoke came back towards me and I looked and the Doe was still standing, still eating. Absolutely no reaction to the shot. From what I could make of this was the deer never heard a thing ect..I slowly got a tree between me and the doe and went into a slow moveing reload. Ok I got reloaded, and by then the doe had grazed much closer to me Like 25 to 30 yds.. I slowly aimed at the does shoulder area useing the tree as a rest. Boommmn and the doe did a flip and fell down. All right I thought. I walked over to where the doe lay dead and checked my slug hit on the doe. I couldn,t believe it.The slug which should have hit the shoulder area instead went through the does neck just under the head. What in the hell is going on here I though. The very next morning I test target fired the gun at our club range and it was right on.To this day I look back on this as a very weird take on this doe. It was as if I was inside a time shift which where I saw the doe in each shot ,, her location to my eyes to shoot wasn,t perfectly showing me to where she was in front of me.There for both shots , 1 missed completely and the final hit was at least 4 feet away from where I aimed. The neck hit. Was the Navy doing some experiment tests in this area to cause this effect. ? Dam,I do not know what happened that day All I know is things were not right.
  8. Well done, Doe scent can really work.Everytime I went in on my watch in the morning just above Cameron, N.Y. , I would put on the bottom of my Sorel,s some tinks 69. Start a scent track across the open field then walk 10 or so yards out away from the pines where I sit inside the woods on watch. Track into the field deeper along the tree line and when I was about 40yds. below my watch. Then I would cut straight into the woods and go in a at least 35 to 40 yrd,s in front of my watch. Try this and see how you do on any opening day or during the rut. This works. Young bucks or whatever will track this scent on the same track you set up and track right in front of your watch. And then bamm. Before you hit the field near your vehicle, you will need to descent your boots. I use a little water premixed with a touch of clorox. Pour enough on a small sponge to soak the sponge to descent the sponge and then do your boots all over , bottoms sides ect. Going in, do not walk on any deer trails, go in where the grass is very short or the shortest.. Reason, your hunting pants can drop scent off on higher grass. When you get near your watch, doe scent your boots bottoms good and a little on boot sides. Then set up your doe in heat sent track. The clorox mix ,I learned from trapping with a friend. Again, well done with the doe piss scent. You gave it a try and it worked. Deer meat in the freezer. Froggy
  9. I am not sure how long this posting on the DEC was, but I can see what this sportsman is also seeing. Excessive nuisance permits especially and excessive party permits are killing the N.Y.S. herd off. I quit my membership from a hunting club for the reasons that relate to this kill off. I live up in northern tier and we used to come the opening of the southern tier in area 8T where we were always in the woods on opening day morning just knowing we were going to take home some venison to help compensate for our trip costs for these hunts. Last time I hunted our posted leased land in area 8T, I would say about 6 yrs. back. On the opening morning my boy and myself from 7am to 12 noon we hear just 3 shots ????????????? Was there all day till sunset hrs. and absolutely saw no deer at all. Also in the afternoon we heard like 2 more shots. Oh my I thought, what ta hell are we doing in southern tier spending our money and time plus paying for the two of us $300.00 in club dues. When there is no deer. Over the 20 past years we have hunted this area and you always saw all kinds of deer. Thats when we dropped out of the club. We live up north in area 6G. One of our favorite spots was Stony Point state land. All kinds of deer running around. Not anymore. Now back a few years when hunting was great and there was lots of deer I heard off the grapevine that one land owner was issued 300 nuisance permits. Sounded crazy to me at the time but I heard this chatter more than once. It had got so good hunting there that I ran into 3 guys from the state of Maine that came all this way to hunt here. Now today It,s not even worth the gas to go over there , there,s is very few deer left on this state land area. Also area 6G, the DEC has continued to issue a average of 16,000 doe permits each year. Is it the car insurance companies on the DEC about paying so many car/deer damage claims.DEC says it is the land owners complaining of deer damage to their crops If we new where these places were, saying not that this isn,t going on. We would knock on each farmers door and say, here we are. Can we take some deer off your land ? Where is the corn crops on Stony Point area ? Well I threw in our 2 cents. Maybe were wrong but to me maybe were somewhat right ? What do you hunters think???????????????
  10. I was just thinking on the pic,s I uploaded , If the pic,s do not expand to a bigger size for better viewing go into your browser and add the image expander extension.. This will expand the pics to a larger size, works with most pic,s when you hover over them with your curser. In added extention search, type in image than search.you will see the one to add. Froggy
  11. Ok, I hope you can see these pics. Top right is when I just got this buck out of the ravine. Top left is my buck hanging from camp porch , only one with horns..Look closely and you will see the slug tap on him right shoulder. ==================================================================================================== Middle right hanging was a 6 point I got the previous year. Middle left is inside the camp cutting up the limburger cheese. ==================================================================================================== Bottom right is the end of one of our opening days. Bottom left was a great day before me and my buddy started back home. We had filled all our tags. =================================================================================================== Froggy
  12. This deer take experience happened to me 1993 in near Cameron,N.Y. on top of the very high very wooded hills across from Cameron going in the back way road. Clayton Calumet hunting club land. The back way I went in that day was just before Cameron, N.Y.. As you get to the very top of the hill. the ravine is on your right. The club later on quit leaseing this side because the price to hold the lease , they were asking to much money for it. We kept the 600 acres to hunt on the back side. The ravine itself is huge. Runs very deep in away in from the road. Looking at a hunter in the bottom from the top. He looks real tiny. Gives you an idea on how deep this thing was. Well, I,ve dug out some pic,s ,scanned them ,but I do not know how to get then into this talk discussion. Help and it will be done. Make sure you give me clear understanding instructions. so a dummy could do it. ha ha . Note that the deer was a good 8 point but the horns also had a 1 1/2 in point . I called that my number 9 point, ok... Froggy
  13. Thanks you so much folks for your response to my posting on this event in my life. When I tell a experience , I want you to see through my eyes as the way it happened. I will talk more in the future on other hunting experiences. Froggy
  14. I had one hell of a time dragging this buck up the ravine hill. There was at least 4 inches of fresh snow to make the ground a little slippery. I filled out my tag first then i took my buck knife and opened him up. The piss bladder was full so I lifted the bladder out of the deer,s body and held it from behind with one hand faceing the bladder away from the deer. With my other hand I took my knife and poked a hole in the bladder. This nicely drained the bladder ok. Then I finished up gutting this guy.I bagged the heart and liver and put these organs in my back pack now came the dragging fun part. man this took a long time to get this buck up the ravine wall. when i got where the incline got real steep I had to put one foot against any of the small tree,s , stand up all the way , take up the rope slack and then fall backwards while pulling with my body weight to move the deer up the hill. Over and over I did this. I,m 6 foot 2 inches tall and my body weight then was around 235 lbs.. If i had been a small frame person i do not think I could have made it out without help. close to the top, I tagged the deer and tied the rope to a tree . then i waved a car down to ask for help. The guy said ok, the only question he asked me was : Is the deer tagged. Yes sir, I replied so he helped me finish up and we got the buck on the edge of the road. I shook his hand to thank him and he nodded no problem. Now i had no camera on me but later at camp i did take some pic,s. we were staying at the Canesteo rod and Gun club.probably 11 guys all together. We slept on our own cots that we brought with us from home.Plus any other usual hunting gear.i will work on posting some pic,s later to add to this hunting story. Be patient till i post these pic,s and i hope you guys enjoyed this hunting adventure with me.I will never forget the buck fever i experienced even though I had all ready taken many deer over the past years, but this was truly different. man my heart was just pounding in my ears waiting for that buck to move his head to be sure that this guy had horns. Froggy
  15. Yes folks it could be bolt slop or magazine shifting enough to cause a miss load.Anyhow , this is Remingtons problem not mine. If I correctly recall, the clip locks up towards the bullet end. Not the bullet rear. So this could maybe causeing this. well ,when I get the rifle back I can imagine Remington,s response will be that there is nothing wrong. thanks for your input , Happy holidays to you folks also, Froggy
  16. Best buck in my life I ever got was a 9 point. Shot him right in his bed while still hunting a deep ravine. I had no party permit at the time this happened, only my buck tag. This guy was very smart. When the hunting pressure got on him to where he had to leave where he was bedding In this deep ravine,, just below his bedroom there was a gully wash out that ran quite a bit towards the ravine bottom. The gully wash out was deep enough so that when he jumped into it, he was below the line of sight of any hunter. The buck could easily low crawl down the gully to a point where when he new it was safe. He would sneak forward out of the ravine and then cross the road to go into the woods on the other side . That morning, I went on watch at the end of the ravine before daylight.. Man, you talk about cold and frosty just trying to sit still there leaning up against the tree. I was in full blaze orange but I was also wearing long johns and checkered red and black wool pants to keep warm. The coat color was dulled out in orange because of the years of hunting use. Come 9:30 a.m. I started to still hunt into the ravine bottom at a very very slow pace. In the ravine bottom there was a active stream running to help cover up any sounds I may make. Of course you do your best not to. Now there was heavy tall pines running up the sides of this deep ravine. So every so often,I would slowly squat down and give a good look under them to see any deer that may be in my vision. This went on for better then half an hour. I came to a fairly deep gully run off.I slowly crossed the gully to where I could squat and take a look up under those pines. We,ll to my surprise I could see deer legs standing very still. Now remember that I had no doe take permit. Ok, I am a lefty so I shoot off of my left shoulder. This was to me perfect for this situation so I slowly raised my gun to the shooting position and then I did a slow frame side step to see the deer clearly. Holy crap, there was a huge deer standing very still on a very small plateau but I could not determine for sure if it was a buck.Behind the deers head there was all kinds of tree limbs. I had to wait till he moved his head.My sights were right behind his right shoulder and I said to myself as my heart was loudly banging in my ears , there,s no way this deer has a chance if it,s a buck. Then it happened. The buck new something was up so he very very slowly turned his head.It seemed like a eternity before he did move. and then I new, boom the 12ga. went moving a 1oz. remington slug at his shoulder, then he took one bound toward the ravine the one I had just crossed.I racked in another slug knowing he was all mine.I quickly paced up to his bed and looked into the gully. and there he was just where he jumped, dead. The slug went through behind the right shoulder and just stopped under the skin on the other side. Perfect I thought. It was over. A beautiful heavy beam 9 point buck. This was in southern tier N.Y. near Cameron Mills, N.Y..
  17. Ants, I looked into other hunting forums that had mentioned same problem based on the same not loading properly with the Remington 783. They mailed their clips in and Remington mailed them back to them.Remington found the clips were ok. .Also I did not see any mechanical problems either with the clip that came with my gun., Thats why Remington said to send the new gun back. My reason is, the problem only occurs when you are actually shooting the gun. After you shoot,, ,and begin the reload next round process, something is occuring that miss aligns the heard of the bolt when traveling forward to the rear of the next pick up round in the clip.Of course that,s Remington,s problem. Hope I explained this better with more information I found out through digging deeper into this problem. Ants, You and yours have a great holiday. Later, Froggy
  18. I typed out a nice suggestion , went into preview before posting. BOOMM it disappeared// Gone
  19. Well, today I packaged up my brand new Remington 783 to ship it back to them for evaluation. Purchased through Gander Mountain 12/02/15 Problem is failing to load rounds from ammo clip properly during fireing for target sighting in. Inserting a loaded clip and slowly checking to see bolt line up contact point to rear of round to head of bolt looks normal.Everything discussed here was done at our club range. But when you fire a round and go to load another round from clip into barrel, bolt will miss round and ride right over round in clip ??? This would be nice if you were following up on a Black bear kill which you more than felt it was safe to do so. Suddenly the bear gets up , looks at you and decides to check you out as a pork chop. you quickly scope the bear, pull the trigger and hear a bad sound. ( Click). Oh s***t. Prepare to beat this bear to death with you gun. I advised Remington that there is excessive bolt end play when bolt is retracted fully to the rear. what is happening after fireing and quickly loading another round is another thing. A high speed camera would easily see what it is happening .i told Remington that if you took a brand new Remington 783 right out of the box, cleaned the barrel and went and test fired the gun at their range ,I guaranteed them they would encounter the same miss loading problems.
  20. Shawn, Glad to have you aboard our hunting ship. Everybody welcomes you. I am up in the Watertown N.Y.. area and if we can help you in any way , please ask. Froggy ( 40 plus years hunting the game things. Only got lost about 4 times over those years bye tracking other peoples wounded game, but managed to foot it out.)
  21. The deer won,t even notice the shorter barrel when you shoot it. 22 or 20 inch barrels do not change velocity that much.
  22. Stick with the 30-06 round. You will do well with it with the ammo available. Go for Nosler Partition in Federal Vital Shok. minimum of 150gr. or heavier grain loads that the rifle shoots good with.. I had a Savage 111 in 7MM with the wooden stock. I purchased the fiber plastic stock for or whatever their called . Was not that expensive. This lightened the gun somewhat and the stock was really sharp looking in color black. Savage accuracy with the new stock was great. I just purchased a remington bolt action in 270 Winchester for my needs. The 30-06 will work just fine for you for all north American big game but I would leave the grizzly Bears to a heavier caliber. good Luck, Froggy
  23. We have had 3 Mossberg 500 shotguns in our family. We sold one and still of course have the 2 in our gun locker. I cannot say enough how wonderful these gun models are. Just super. Over the many years hunting N.Y. Southern Tier near Cameron, N. Y. Our gun club, The Clayton Calumets which I have belonged to for over 25 yrs. I have killed many doe,s on party permits and bucks with this shotgun useing a slug barrel. The best and only slug I would only use is the Remington 1 ounce slug. Open sights at the gun range, I could take half of the hole out of the hole i just got on the 1st. shot at 75yds.. Now you may think wow , open sights. Yes I could do this. I was a expert shooter in the military. The 1 ounce slugs are soft lead and when they hit a deer behind the shoulder, they just drop. I always no matter what, if the shot isn,t good I don,t take it. Let the deer go. If the weapon you hunt with is not sighted in so you know where that bullet is going to hit exactly where you aim it, then you might as well stay home. You have made a wonderful purchase buying the Mossberg 500,s. They,ll never let you down and will last you a life time. Just keep them cleaned and oiled when needed. Froggy
  24. HocK3y24, I just purchased 2 Boxes of the 130gr Winchester XP for my 270. the season for rifle up north here is closed but I have yet to sight in my new Rifle. I am waiting for my tripod to come in the mail, then i will go to the range. Question is,that you mentioned useing Winchester XP,s. How do they shoot and did you connect on any deer useing them ? If so, how did they perform on the deer ? Thanks, 12/08/2015 Froggy
  25. If this happens again,, an old trick is to go back to your last blood sign after dark and look for blood sign with a gas lantern. You would be amazed how this alluminates any blood traces you could maybe still continue to track with.
