LIVE From The Woods 2018 - Lets hear stories and see some pictures!

Been in a tree since 5:45. Heard something walking before first light, but it stopped close to my trail in. I heard nothing after that. Other than a pair of raccoons, on the way in, I’ve seen nothing. Too overcast for the range finder to work, and man is it damp. 4L checking in. Woods are dead... 4L. 38 degrees. 8 mph wind out of the northwest. Probably going to set up the climber on my neighbor’s property, a spot that’s good for the wind, and one I’ve not sat in the morning. Thought about returning to the spot I say last night, but the terrain is ankle busting, and I’m just not that familiar with it yet to go in in the am dark. Out There - Rebel Darling's Journal

First time out in over a week this afternoon. For one reason or another (no point in going into detail here), my hunts kept getting cancelled. I missed four scheduled hunts, in total. Time has been tough to come by this year, and I'm a little nervous and frustrated that I have yet to harvest a doe for meat. Got in the woods later than I had hoped. Sat an area on my neighbor's property that I'd only sat once before, during the second week (maybe the first?) of November last year. I saw some chasing through the trees then, so I figured I'd give the spot a closer look and a sit. Saw no deer. Got pelted and wet in the hail storm, but both my outerwear and base layer kept me pretty warm. The outer layer is definitely better suited for spot and stalk hunts. I was on the ground this afternoon, due to the storm rolling through. Right before the storm hit, I watched several turkeys at about 40 yards (no comfortable shot) and then roost about 60-70 yards out. I'm thinking I should go back before dawn tomorrow and set up to catch them off the roost, heading down the hill to water. I've never really hunted turkey before, so I'm a bit clueless here, but it seems like that's the right strategy. But... They're real close to the property line that I'm allowed to hunt, and I'm concerned that they'd be off the property before official sunrise. I'm torn on whether I should try the bow, or shotgun... The spot looks promising for deer. There are some old rubs in the area, and there's a fairly well established deer trail. Since all the leaves are now falling, it's hard to tell how fresh the sign is; it's being covered up throughout the day. Since I saw action there during early November, I'll likely sit there again. It works well for a south or southwest wind. -

3 years old, medium use. Just after I posted, I tried what Chef had mentioned, and the bolt clicked and I was able to get them tightened down. I’ve also had them lock up, but have gotten that taken care of quickly (hurts in late season when the gloves have to come off, ha). I’m going to research how they’re put together so I can better understand the mechanism. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk- 10374 replies

Scratch it all. Just heard thunder, and checked the weather map. Warm air has a band of thunderstorms coming through. Not going up a tree. Guess I’ll just get wet and think for a while... I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk- 10374 replies

Anyone ever had trouble getting these to tighten on their line wolf climbers? They won’t tighten... first hunt in over a week, and this happens. Frustrated. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk- 10374 replies

They tear and shred up trees in my experience. They also scare the crap out of the ladies when ambling by the fire-pit at night after a few wines. I've read that they're good eating (seriously), but one can imagine how cautious you'd need to be while skinning.- 10374 replies

Mast and apple crops dropped early up here on the Plateau. Anyone know what the deer have been feeding on in the area? They're definitely moving longer distances to get from usual bedding to feed.

Couldn't get out today after I had scheduled it. Employee's friend's mother died, so I kept the shop. Worked from home, though, and as I walked out to drain a rain barrel, I bumped a doe feeding just inside the wood line. She ran off on the trail I use to get to my "doe stand." Seems like they're definitely up on their feet this afternoon... Magic Hour! Good luck...- 10374 replies

I agree w/ ADK. Something feels off, like the deer gorged last night, and are sleeping in today. Other than that, dead quiet but for some crows and chickadee. Watched a raccoon climb a split hemlock at daybreak. So happy to be in the woods for sunrise, my first of the season. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk- 10374 replies

Drew on a doe at 30 yards. Man... What a rush. I was uncomfortable with the shot through some beech whips and striped maple saplings. She was moving at a good clip after browsing out of range. So, I let off, and let her go. Thrilling. I was shaking. It's on now...- 10374 replies

The doc shot me up on Wednesday. I always get some light symptoms the next day or two, and I'm just now coming out of the stuffy head and cough. Haven't had full-blown flu since I've started receiving shots. I'm definitely in support of the shots, especially with my 1 yr. old running around now.

Yessir! They're also tree peepers, so sometimes the ground game in there is the best choice. That said, I think @RPI Bush Hunter's buddy arrowed a doe from a tree stand this week/end. And I hear ya on the ticks! Man... I've come out of there with a dozen on my outerwear, but only if I get in the thick and nasty.- 10374 replies

I saw one fella on youtube that wrapped his bow rope around the bottom half of his climber when he packs it up so that he never forgets it. He was using the Lone Wolf hand climber. Unsure how easy that would be to replicate on other brands / models. I really like @Lawdwaz's idea of side pouches...

Out There - Rebel Darling's Journal

This year is going to present a new challenge for me up here in 4L. For the past few years that I’ve lived here, we’ve had good acorn crops. This year, however, I’m going to have to learn more about other food sources because the acorn crop was slight, and early. I’ve noticed an activity drop off on trails that were regular these past few years. I’m thinking that the doe are heading over the ridge regularly to mow down the food plots the hunting family has cultivated, this changing up their pattern in light of a lack of fresh food sources on this side of the ridge. All the apple trees dropped in early September, so that won’t hold them here either. One good thing is that the marsh at the back of my property line places me between primo buck bedding and the food source I mentioned. Maybe this year will be the year I tag a buck. They’re going to have to travel longer distances between that bedding, food and doe. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
