  1. There are crossbows like the Excalibur micro that are over 250 ib yea there recurve but with a limit on poundage you can only get so much power oUT of them is,my point.
  2. Lol anyway crossbow is not archery . They should not have the same season I agree with you there . In new york you can't use more then 200ib crossbow. So there is a limit to how powerful they get . I'm guessing that someone at the DEC figure all this out and came up with the 200 ib limit on crossbows for that reason.
  3. Using a balistic calculator the numbers show that even at 400 fps the 350 grain arrow drops over a foot after 40 yards And that's sighting 0 at 30 yards 300 fps arrow arrow is just a little worse not by much they both have enough kinetic energy to kill a deer at that range You get about 5 yards in usable trajectory with 400 fps . The drop at 40 is 5.60 - at 400 fps And 9.75- for 300 fps using 350 arrow At 50 both ar way low over a foot . Anything else you want to know ? Btw iv only been using both for 35 years I think at this point I no something about it

  5. They Moral Of The Story Is They kill elephants with 80 90 ib compound bows so it does not make a difference for deer now does it . People kill deer with 35 40 ib recurve bows all the time in fact that is around what native Americans used
  6. They take less skill obviously btw they make compound bows with 80 90 100 ib draw weight and those are as or more powerful then crossbow it's all relative to what u buy exactly
  7. No because archery a bow is still harder to shoot for a beginner . Anyone can shoot a crossbow accurately Not true of archery a bow you have to practice. Build up muscle strength to use it there not the same as far as skill leaning curve only similar in practical range for hunting . Guys that get crossbows don't want to take the time to learn the skill of shooting a bow . There not the same and thats why the season is not the same for good reason .
  8. Good point another reason I still have this one it's at 175 ib .
  9. they use shorter lighter bolts it's basically the same but since you can use a scope and it's just easier to shoot . To someone who does not no better they appear to be more then what they are . Since the bolt is shorter when you go shoot at a target it gives you the impression it's much more powerful . Because that little bolt disappears in that target . If you go mesure a arrow from a 70ib 30 inch draw a compound bow is going in about the same thing in those targets but because it's longer it don't seem that way Allso depends on you set up of a bow . If your shooting compound on low settings sure a crossbow is more powerful. And still in hunting conditions in woods practical range 40 yards.
  10. Yea i like my bow better ,I find them awkward to hold if you had to walk in woods with one , more so then a bow So I never botherd with hunting with it the one that I have and in the zone I live you can only use a bow anyway . The can be a little more accurate when using a scope but not enough to make a difference when hunting . I pretty sure that if you used it for hunting and left it cocked for hours at a time day after day . That the string and cables limbs would wear out pretty Fast .
  11. Buy a shotgun it can be the first and the only gun you ever néed . Yea a 20 ga is fine if your worried about recoil if your not get the 12ga and if your really not get a gun that can handle 12ga 3 inch mag shells when your hunting with heavy close u probably will not notice recoil anyway .
  12. Get a 3 inch mag shotgun smoothbore is fine us rem rifled 3 inch slugs like the Remington 1187 1100 or one of the pump actions. Then you with that one gun can hunt deer and small game if you want to Blue Mountain is the range On the way out of NYC to the caskills If you want a rifle get a bolt action 30-06 good for anything up to a moose .
  13. I don't hunt with a crossbow but have had one for over 20 years I had what I think was the first compound crossbow bernette demon . FOR SOME reason the industry is full of compound crossbows . But they really don't make sense because it's not like a bow that you actually have to hold that weight for minutes at a time waiting for a shot . You use a cocking aid so it's easy to pull back so the cams are not needed with a crossbow anymore Plus they can break much easier then a recurve crossbow . Am I missing something here ?
  14. I hunt with a compound bow but have and like my 245 fps recurve crossbow it's light and compact and the practical range of any bow crossbow is really no more the 40 yards for hunting . If I was going to get a faster one would be the excalbar micro . Recurves are just more easy to work on if something needs to be fixed . Had I compound crossbow at one time and the the cables broke on me to get it fixed was a nightmare. So I'm bias against them I guess
  15.  I took a,trip up to sterling got the permit since I was there don't no if I will be hunting there yet but It sure is,big place one thing I don't like is it  looks really rocky in there  from  my experience deer avoid  rocky ground if they can .  But I no there bears in this place so I may go just for that anyway . You been all over there is it all like that ? I only went near the visitors center area really didn't have a chance to explore much .looks like a lot of bush wacking and  pain in the ass to tag one out of that place . The lady working there said they are opening up one part for small game this year

    1. Uptown Redneck

      Uptown Redneck

The part i hunted last season, very close to the Rockland County line was easily accessible however hunting wise it was pretty barren. But then again most areas were like that because of the mild weather. I will be looking at other areas for this season. As for bears one of my wife's patients made the local paper for the size of the bear he shot in Sterling Forest last season.

      LJC

Yea  I can see that. I probably take a shot there for bear  with my bow just for the hell of it  maybe since it's not that far from me .

  16. I know these guys give me the address of your property and I will send you there names lol just joking looks like the guys from duck dynasty lol
  17. I bow hunt because it's a challenge I all so during gun season like to spot and stalk deer for the same reason even tho blinds and stands make it much easier. If you just want fresh meat it's much easier to just shoot a cow or get it at the supermarket don't you think .
  18. So you're suggesting one big general season? Doesn't it sound like everyone would just use a rifle than? Yes Give me a break then everyone would use only a rifle . Archery gets longer season because they don't have the same impact on the deer population as guns do .
  19. unless you live in a bow only zone people are shooting guns at small game all the time during bow season just not at deer .
  20. Are you planning on deer hunting with gun bow or crossbow muzz ? Did you get a dmp for those areas . If not your probably going to have a hard time getting anything on public land in Huston valley area, long Island I here is much better . But I am pretty sure you need a permit to hunt out there for any public land on the island . Deer on public land are the Rambo of the deer population
  21. I hunted in Chenango b4 last time I was up there was probably 12 years ago
  22. You know been to every place that you can hunt in southern zone except sterling forest . Going to check that one out maybe later in the week I don't no what I said to piss them off ? I'm not the one who started that ( leases are bad thread ) and they bust my balls because I mention the game laws in other countries. Trust me if I want to be a prick I would not do it here . I would go to youtube and f with the peta people . My dad told me back in the good old days they use to go up to the farms and offer them bottle of jack Daniels or some other wisky if they let them hunt there lol
