  1. The second and subsequent ruts occur when a doe that was not bred during the first rut re-enters estrous and doe fawns come in to estrous. A doe fawn will not be able to enter estrous until she achieves a body weight of 80 pounds or better. This depends on when she was born, how well her dam produced milk for her fawn(s) and the level of protein she consumed after weening. In Southern PA on my parents farm a good portion of the doe fawn come in to estrous along with the mature doe. We indirectly feed them our best soybeans all summer
  2. My brother has a John Deere 1943 I believe that runs on kerosene or gasoline. It has a compression release and a big external flywheel on the left side for starting it. My nieces and nephews drive it around his place, after he starts it for them first.
  3. Those were try-outs being held for this years Santa's sleigh team.
  4. Are you not permitted to use a black powder muzzle loading rifle in the shotgun only areas?
  5. Does she have a sister that is available?
  6. Last year I saw a 8N with plow for $1,500. It sat there for 8 months. Not sure if it was sold.
  7. It's a 1946 not 1956 typo. The double brakes come in handy plowing snow in tight spots. I cut my my teeth driving farm equipment on an old Oliver. The 9N was working fine. All I did was replace the muffler and used the berilium bolts. Much easier to drill out than the steel ones.
  8. What is the approximate date of the images that they use? I'm assuming April/May from the leafout that is visible. The dark green being pines and the lighter green Maples as they leafout before Oaks, Hickories etc.
  9. Because it will weigh over 300 pounds and I'll be dragging it out myself three ridges back. Seriously. I will be using a flintlock that I built for my son who was killed in Afghanistan December 2008
  10. I don't hunt for phonebooks. Is there a season open on them? Short of using a block of ballistic gelatin, I would setup a melon in front of a sand pile for those purposes.
  11. I use an industrial cleaner not available to the general public. DME Mold Cleaner. It's for use with Thermoplastic tooling. Injection molding. Blow molding etc.
  12. Anyone have experience with this area? Access? Pressure? Clowns? Lodging near by? I live in PA just outside of Genesee. I figure it's a good two hour drive one way. I'm not up to that after a day in the field.
  13. Chest Girth Chart Here’s a table to estimate your deer’s live weight. Measure the girth of the chest in inches just behind the front legs. Girth (in inches) Estimated Live Weight (in pounds) 24 55 25 61 26 66 27 71 28 77 29 82 30 90 31 98 32 102 33 110 34 118 35 126 36 135 37 146 38 157 39 169 40 182 41 195 42 210 43 228 44 244 45 267 46 290 47 310 48 340
  14. With regard to successful kill threads, most of the replies involve DEC Officer wanna bees. So many official time keepers on here it's a wonder they even get any time in the field. Maybe we should all pack it up at 2:30PM fly home and make posts on here from the home PC before the days legal shooting hours are done. There's a reason why I don't post anything about my kills. It's guaranteed someone will find fault, become jealous of your success and belittle if not out right harass you for killing a buck bigger than "his". I've taken 17 P&Y buck in my lifetime so far. One of them had a picture and article in a local newspaper about the hunt that I wrote. The year following that article I had "hunters" driving around looking for my truck. It got so bad that I would have to park in a spot and have my buddy take me miles away to hunt where I wanted to hunt. I felt like the hunted rather than the hunter. People go nutzo with killing a deer. Nothing else matters. Regulations, trespassing, safetey and outright jacklighting at 2AM. I no longer hunt to kill. I hunt for other reasons that many would not understand. I've taken 499 deer total in my life. Number 500 will be a very special deer, because it will be my last... Congratulations on your first of many successful hunts. The reason you look "odd" is because the camera got stupid and didn't know what to focus on. May the Red Gods smile down upon you for many years to come.
  15. I spoke with my buddy today. He uses the .50 calibre 295 grain lead HP. If you're shooting jacketed bullets from a ML you better have at minimum 1,800 FPS velocity when you contact your target for adequate expansion. .50 calibre all lead that opens to the size of a quarter is exactly what you want for deer killing. You want your energy expended in the deer. Not the dirt on the other side of it. In my Knight MK-85 I use their saboted bullets. .54 calibre 310 grains all lead with a flat HP. My longest kill with them was 167 yards. The buck dropped got up and went another 30 or 40 yards and piles up. The bullet was recovered on the far side between the rib it broke and the skin.
  16. I would use the Rem 700 in .308. However a 14x40 scope is all but useless unless you're going to watch fields. a 3x9 or 4x12 magnification would be much better.
  17. I have a stool that Cusehunter pictured. It does squeak when you swivel. I put vegetable oil on it, give it a spin and wipe off the excess. The leg adjustments can be a bit tough to get the locking pins pushed in for adjustment. I use a small pocket knife in the closed position and place the hinge end of the knife on the pin and push it in. Beats the hell out of victimizing your fingers. I always have one leg longer than the rest as I tend to sit on sloping ground. Folded up it's less than 18" and fits in/on my backpack nice. The stool, a section of camo material 56" x 12' with grommets or holes to snake the rope through and 50' of 3/16" braided camo rope and I can setup anywhere I choose. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Hunter-s-Specialties-Leaf-Blind-Material-56-x-12/26464510
  18. Powerbelts are the best thing since sliced bread and toilet paper. My hunting buddy has a TC Hawken 50 calibre and uses the same bullet as you do with 80 grains of FF Goex. 3 shots @ 50 yards makes a nice cloverleaf all touching. 2 inches high with iron sights. You use 90 grains of Pyrodex. Is that by weight or volume? What is your aiming point on the front sight? Is it a blade or bead? If it's a bead use the top 12 O'clock of the bead as your aiming point @ 50 yards. At 100 yards the center of your bead will represent your point of impact. At longer ranges 75 yards plus just center the bead behind the shoulder.
  19. 1956 Ford 9N $2,000 with a bush hog. Found it in a guys front yard 2 miles from my parents farm he wanted $3,500. I went to the bank with drew $2,000 and went back started counting money for him said You take $2,000? He damn near hurt himself taking the money. My brother found a plow for it and we use it to keep the farm paths/roads open when it snows.
  20. SW of New Ringold about 3 miles West of 309 Where they guy had a hubcap collection all over his yard. The road right at the bottom make a left if heading North and go out past the Caboose parked by the road. It's about 1 mile before the gamelands parking lot.
  21. Many years ago while standing on the side of Blue Mountain near the Appalachin trail with my grandfather I was hearing 4 5 shots ringing out all over the place. It sounded like Utah beach. I was getting upset and said, "they're killing all the buck before they get to us. My Grandfather leaned over and said " One shot deer, two shot maybe 3 shots no deer."
  22. I had an eye injury in 1987 and required glasses. After that my ability to shoot competitive was severely impaired. It got to the point where I'd drop 2 shots out of the 10 ring and pack the bow up and go home. I spent a lot of time on the local 3D courses. At one shoot I was having a very good day and there was a novelty shoot to win Tavern Hams. $5 for 3 shots at a 3D Elk at about 70 yards. It had a blaze orange 2" sticker on it's chest. I hit it first shot and won. I told the guy double or nothing and laied the 2nd arrow up against the 1st. I looked at him and said triple or nothing. He said OK wise guy. I took a long moment visualized the shot and drew back slow and steady. On the release I turned put my release in my pocket looked at the guy and said I'll need some help loading those hams in the truck. On the follow through I closed my eyes and could hear the arrow hit the other 2. It blew off a nock and a fletch. $5 2 arrows ruined and 60 pounds of Tavern ham.
  23. Lone Wolf Alpha sit and climb. I bought one back in 2003 and just bought the newer wider seat section. I'm not a big guy but the extra room makes for a comfortable all day sit plus it's easier to turn your body to look behind you rather than leaning over and peeking around a tree trunk. I also got the longer traction belts. The trees I use are larger in diameter now and I was right at the limit. Packing it up for transport can be a little tricky. Get a set of quick detachable LC2 GI surplus straps for it. $20 I attach a medium ALICE pack to it for my extra clothes and equipment. I also attached a quiver bracket to the right side of the platform. Why bowhunters insist on shooting with a quiver hanging on their bow I'll never know. I shot competitive archery for many years and was the PA State champion in 1983.
  24. soak it in buttermilk over night. Then in a cast iron skillet fry it in hot bacon fat. Get it as hot as possible and sere both sides then reduce heat covered for another 5 - 7 minutes until it's crispy on the edges. If you have any roast cook them in a crock pot on low for 8 hours with potatoes carrots celery and McCormick season mix. A steak you can cut up in to cubes and put in a crock pot with Campbells cream of mushroom soup. 1 can per pound of cubes. serve on top of egg noodles Venison strogonoff. Did you get the butcher's cut? The 2 small loins that ley up against the spine on the body cavity side. Those are the best cuts on a deer and the butchers usually keep them. You can pull them out with your fingers after you gut the deer.
