Pick up a piece of canvas light tan and paint brown and blac X's on it. Overlap the X's. Kinda like the ASAT camo pattern.

Solid fuel hand warmer. I use GI Surplus from Korean War era. There are several types out now on Ebay. I would get them lit and place them on the back of my neck underneath a balcava while fishing for Steelhead. They last about 8 - 10 hours depending on the fuel you use. http://www.ebay.com/bhp/solid-fuel-hand-warmer Gloves will never keep your hands as warm as mittens. Mittens trap a lot more air. I have a pair made for me from a deerskin I took years ago. They open up and fold back on top of hand and stay put with velcro. I also use a pair of GI surplus mittens that have a trigger finger on each hand and come up well past your wrist. If it's real cold I wear the cotton glove liners also. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/546434/military-surplus-trigger-finger-mitten-shell-cotton-and-leather-medium-olive-drab-and-tan

I have a place off of Cat Hollow RD. County Rt. 7 St Rt.206. I use it for fishing, should get up there for deer. PA getting too crowded. Guys from NH got a lease down the road and spend more time on my property in PA. Damn pain in the ass. I spend more time collecting tree stands and calling the PSP on trespassers. Usually us PA Ridge Runners just wait till they go home and burn their cabin down if they won't stop the BS.

I wash everything in Arm & Hammer original scent free. Store in plastic totes and include some cedar branches. I also make a mix of Arm & Hammer and distilled water and spray my Muck boots both inside and out. You need tp clean your boots. If not, every step you take you're puffing foot stench out the top of them. The most important article of clothing is your hat headwear. Hats can get downright stinky.

That's the only way I hunt. I'm a proud member of the FILO Organization. {First In Last Out} Back in the day when I was a young buck and always had to see what was over yonder hill, In the morning I'd get restless and want to move. I'd tell myself 15 more minutes. I saw and killed many a deer during those "extra" 15 minutes. 15 more minutes. Just keep repeating it every 15 minutes.

I use the wind. I setup downwind from where I expect game to appear. As far as smoking goes, it's not the scent, it's all the hand motion involved. You could quit for the hunt or do as I do and lug a big water pipe in to the stand with a 4 foot tube and mouthpiece.

Salt pork and hardtack.

Pre storm movement. Storms coming and they will fill themselves with food then go ride out the storm in sheltered cover.

Rain and high winds tomorrow...some questions...
DanceswithSkunks replied to blackradio's topic in Deer Hunting
Is there any place in the laurel where you can get up in a tree? I'd get in early, ready to go an hour before light, and catch them as they return to bed down. Then again with this weather they may already be hunkered down in the laurels already. Too bad you don't have a patner to do two man drives with. -

Pennsylvania has been selling doe licenses for over 50 years. AR started eight years ago. Game commissions sell doe permits to reduce or stabilize the entire deer herd. That's their number one job when it comes to deer mangement. AR in PA is set up to move more deer into the next age class and establish an age structure and B/D ratio that resembles what nature intended. Why would they save deer from being killed if their intention was to "decimate" the herd? If your going to save 50,000 buck you'll need to harvest an additional 50,000 doe to reduce or stabilize the overall population. AR is not an excuse to kill more doe. If they wanted more deer dead they would have permitted you to blast the first buck with bone sticking out of his head and issued more doe tags. Coyotes and bear have always been in PA. I have PGC Game news issues from the 40's with articles and pictures of coyotes that were killed and trapped. Click on the pic below for video.

"They do it because the sale of doe permits means MONEY." $3 of the doe tag is eramarked by law to go towards habitat improvement. The county treasurer is getting $1 per tag they process. They're losing money processing doe tags. That leaves $2 for the PGC general fund. The only people making any money is the company that print the tags.

Hunt where there are deer. Low impact pre-season scouting, observing fields from a distance in late August will give you an idea whats in your area. Bachelor groups are very active this time of year and will break up shortly after they shed their velvet. In season scouting. Anytime your out and about investigate deer sign, check if it's fresh. After a new snow is the best time for this. Everything is right there in black and white. Gutpiles will let you know what got killed where. Post season scouting is when I get serious. First place is the thickest and nastiest stuff you can crawl into, as soon as the season closes. Then look for rub lines and scrape lines. Generation trails. Deer are lazy creatures of habit and will keep doing the same things until they die. As for the actual hunt, plan on staying all day. Deer are active throughout the day for various reaons. Hunting pressure, weather, rutting activity are just a few. Pack extra clothes, food drinks etc. If you don't have it with you, you can't use it. Mental preperation. Enter the woods with a positive attitude. You won't last long without expectations. Try visualization the night before. Go in the woods with confidence. No try! Do or do not.

Antler Restrictions - What are your thoughts?

As usual any discussion soon turns into pissing match that strays off topic. PA has had AR for eight years. The results speak for themselves. The percent of the antlered harvest that is comprised of 2½ year old or older deer as gone from 20% prior to AR to 48% in 2008. Higrading of buck in MS. ? Recent data shows an increase in buck in the age class, 3½ years old or older, with less than 8 points, MS has an 8 point minimum AR. However tools are in the works to correct this problem, sub-4-point (“any buck”) tags. As it is now, 60% of buck harvested in MS reach 3½ years old. http://www.skylandsqdma.com/great/deer/trends.html http://msucares.com/pubs/publications/p2427.pdf&sa=U&ei=7eb2TP6QJ4a0lQf6kL2FBg&ved=0CBAQFjAA&sig2=ABSACNgNqE9HHRh-GMZBKQ&usg=AFQjCNGEw8eINhQhLz-BaBiWyKq-ljYWkQ- 1885 replies
