When someone is trying to sell me on something -is when I usually know somethings up. I am a landowner, I'm all for capitalism, the republican way, 2nd amendment, pumping some money into upstate, and the preservation of the American way. Messing with drinking water and wells never turns out right. Messing with Mother Nature never turns out right. I think a lot of things are being over looked, that cheeks are being turned, and money talks, or shuts right up.

I am with doewhacker. Land is important, money is important, but water is a bit more important –kinda like air, and the shinny ball of fire in the sky. I watched that movie mentioned above “gas land”. Money and greed are an impressive team in the game of destruction. I wish the taxes in NY were under control, the government was back on track, and the state of the economy was healthy. The natural gas tycoons will take advantage of Upstaters and other landowners in hotspots throughout the US in this economic depression. I remember those wind turbines and wind farms –man, that was a cluster of sorts. What a waste. I saw one of those windtamers up close and personal –wow. Now that is intelligent.

If you don't live on the land you hunt, people use it. You can post it, and keep well maintained but if you're home is not on the land -good luck. Respect, honor, loyalty, trust, and simple right from wrong are being removed from society.

Real easy test -set up your trail cam, and actually test the scents. Especially, during the rut and hunting seasons, just don't hunt where you're testing. Stay away from estrous scents unless the rut is on strong. Strong rut equals you witnessing the rut -chase period, first hand. Remember - personal hygiene and oral hygiene are huge in regards to smell. Dial Soap, mouthwash/brushing, and regular trips to the dentist are more valuable then any scent. And of course wind.

Animals (deer) evolve, survival of the fittest. The deer is programed to survive, not out smart. Through the process of evelotion deer have evolved into an amazing creature. Olfactory systems are elite, night vision and the ability to locate movement are outstanding, their hearing is wonderful, the hoof alone is superior in function. Most (wild deer) react through years of genetic programing, 99% of their behaviors, actions, and basic communication are based on instinct and reacted to, not learned. Deer are survivors more than adapters. Next time you're field dressing one of these majestic creatures take a peek inside that cranium.

But, now through trial and error I use the mock scrape, goldenrod, and normal doe urine for cover. When a big "for sure" CHARLIE ALSHEIMER RUT comes I buy the doe in heat. I'm not putting down his other products at all. Those three work best with my style. This outfit incorporates science and common sense.

I do agree with the whole idea of changing deer patterns during season, because it makes so much sense. I think the lunar cycle has a great influence. And, I think population is way down. But, I think we give deer more credit then we should. Almost 20 years ago I would come home from working at a bar before the smokers laws were passed, sleep for about 3 hours, get in the woods smelling like I just walked out of studio 54, wearing carhartts that were out in the garage from where I left them from last time I chained sawed, and shoot a couple of deer in the middle of woods with a beat-up Ithaca 12g model 37 (deer slayer) that I got at a garage sale for 50 dollars, 5 yards away from a 1 day old gut pile. Now I am going vegetarian two weeks before season, drinking chlorophyll, showering with secret potions, spraying stuff all over, wearing all this scent clothing, hunting in super strategic location (studying topographic maps and wind patterns, cameras, and scouting, reading and watching DDH), near food plots, and I sit by myself all day without a deer. I wrote this on an older post: NY state was well on its way to becoming a deer hunting mecca in the 1990's. QDM, food plots, awesome genetics, perfect environmental conditions, and then came the population boom of the coyote and with some better breeding (wondered how that happened?). Now hogs are sneaking over the pa line. Coyotes, hogs, and other issues (disease, regulations, fees, population control strategies) facing the herd are leading to the thought that good old NY might in be in for some heartache. Storm is brewing. I love NY, I love hunting NY –region 8’s are awesome, but when I hunt in SC, GA, I see mature bucks and tons of deer. Like NY used to be. PS –it’s cheaper to hit a coyote with your truck than a deer –for everyone involved. Motive.

8n, 8m, and 8p are hurting. Deer population is way down from 10 years ago. I remember herds 20 plus was not unusual, and 40 at dusk in a field was normal. I remember seeing 10 to 15 deer on full day of hunting -mostly young, but at least I knew there were deer in the woods. During the full moons of seasons past, I remember seeing tons of track in the snow and frozen in the mud from nocturnal activity, not so much anymore. In the spring I am noticing more and more fawn parts littering the hedge-lines and brush lines. Drive by a deer processor -empty. Opening day was silent, as was Thanksgiving and the following Saturday. The woods are feeling empty.
