  1. http://dougsmessageboards.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=smokeless Pretty much everything that can be covered is covered on this page. I've been shooting one for 5 yrs. Its deadly when you find the right loads. XTP's and SST's seem to be the most consistent and accurate bullets, but SST's seem a little thin in the jacket. I use a light load 38 gr of VV110 with 200 gr 40 cal SST's and it will the holes will touch at 100 yds. Every rifle is different so you just have to play with it. Barnes X bullets are tougher but a little more touchy in the accuracy department.
  2. I don't know about you, a field dressed 90-100 lb doe is pretty darn nice. Most people way way over estimate the weight of their animals. The big thing is enjoy nature, enjoy the meat, and be thankful you have the opportunity to be somewhere you can shoot a 100 lb doe. Many people in this world don't have those privileges.
  3. erussel, first who is hunting in your area? I would check around and see if you can find out who hit the deer. You have one arrow, most likely the other hunter will have a few more like it in their quiver. Nothing you can do legally, but its good to give your 2 cents if you find out who hit the first buck. You may help someone to become a better hunter.
  4. Man, tough call. Could have went through "no mans land" that area above the lungs and below the spine. Like everyone said, give him a lot of time 3-4 hrs. He will lay down and stiffen up some, be ready if you find a spot where he laid down. Good luck! The "somewhat" good news is this may not be a fatal shot, I've heard of other deer that have survived hit in this area if the broad head and arrow exits.
  5. To each their own. Who said I wasn't pleased bubba? Just like the guys who like hunting during the rut, I prefer hunting before and after the main rut. I didn't say they were wrong. Other people have an opinion, so do I. Isn't that what makes the world go around? Isn't this a FORUM?
  6. Here is what a 6 point looks like in Ohio. No QDM rules.
  7. Yep, thats it. Tons of buck "running" around. No pattern. No rhyme or reason. That "mature" buck you've been watching is 2 miles away "running" a doe. Lots of 1.5-2.5 bucks walking through the woods or pestering does like fools. How many times have you heard or read about the "giant" buck that was hit by a car at night this time of year.
  8. Amazing what you see around a big pile of corn. Interesting rack, and would shoot the buck.
  9. Pass, and give him 2 years, at least.
  10. Really? Where are they on their page? If you want more pictures, I can email them to you if you're interested in the gun.
  11. More pictures available if needed. Going to post on other sites if no bites locally.
  12. I have a Remington Genesis .50 cal in blue/camo for sale. The gun is unfired with all accessories. $185 to your door or meet for pick-up.
  13. Right on Doc! Its not about "hunting" deer anymore. Its about "harvesting" the biggest buck, or getting it on video. The latter are much easier to do with bait. I could hunt over bait when I go down to Ohio, but won't do it. The greatest satisfaction is knowing I can get a deer in bow range in "IT'S" natural pattern. NO trail cams, NO bait. I may kill one, I may not, but I have the memory and satisfaction of the HUNT. I don't care to, or feel I have to, share that with the rest of the world.
  14. It's up to you if you want to kill a doe in the late ML season. Just be prepared for what you will likely see. Its happened to a friend and my brother. When you gut the deer be prepared to see 2 or 3 perfectly formed 4 inch long fawns pop out. Most hunters down here shoot young of the year does or bucks. They avoid older does because of the gestating fawn issue.
  15. Being able to hit a target and being able to kill a deer are 2 different things. I might be able to hit a paper plate at 400 yards with a pellet gun, but would it kill a deer? Crossbow bolts loose their KE much quicker than longer heavier arrows. The safe kill range for all crossbows is still under 35 yds. Most people keep their shots under 30. I know some bow hunters who shoot out to 60 yds +. Well beyond the effective KE for most bows and arrows. Just because you can hit a deer at that range doesn't mean you can kill it.
  16. Has anyone actually called the DEC to ask about this? My post was cut and paste off of their web site. "Except, the Regular Season deer tag is valid for deer of either sex in Westchester & Suffolk counties, in areas restricted to bowhunting only (WMUs 4J and 8C), and during the late seasons with the appropriate bow or muzzleloading privileges. During the late seasons, the Regular Season deer tag is valid for deer of either sex." I honestly think they are talking about the special late season in Westchester and Suffolk counties where they need to cut the herd drastically.
  17. Ummmm. No you can't take a doe in the MZ season with your regular season buck tag.
