Bubba there have been many accidents when hunters put on deer drive and they are in the middle of the day. There was a little girl shot while in her trailer in Sullivan county a few years ago again in the middle of the day. Also the guys that shoot themselves do it at all hours of the day. So I would say that most don't happen before sunset or just after sunset. mho

That's what I thought, Bubba is trying to confuse us especially with that shitgun. Hate to get hit with that one.
-
It is exactly the same ... just because there is a different way to get the info doesn't make the rule is any less a rule...Joe, I don't know what you are referring to.
-
Bubba how accurate are those shitguns

Dave, I think you have the right attitude you don't look down on people who don't hunt the way you do. Really that's what hunting is all about. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder I would say the same for deer hunters. We all have our own preferences whether it be big or small bucks and does. It's all our choice in the end. They are truly our own personal trophies even if they are not 160".

Culver I agree and about the fishing theory i have a tackle box that has a ruler built into the lid.

I like that Doc, true, true

Culver if you have a watch you can look at the time before you shoot. If you look through a scope you can see if a buck is legal before you shoot. But the ruler you would have to get out of your stand catch the deer and measure his spikes to see if it were 3" or better and if so then you shoot him. I think looking with your vision or a scope is a much better way to do it.
-
Not a good comparison. Maybe you should have said have your vision checked that would be a better comparison.
-
That's so ridiculous what if you didn't have a watch. The DEC will have to mandate that all hunters must carry a watch while hunting along with your license. Because if you don't have a watch how would you know when legal shooting time is (SUNRISE). If caught without watch off to the pokie.

Steve I remember making that same point and I agree with you. I thought they were going to drum me off the site. There is no compromise with some on this site, black or white no grey area. Mean while our whole lives reside in the grey area nothing is cut and dry.
-
In the original thread I mentioned in the 42 years of hunting I have never looked at my watch before I shot a deer. Enough said don't want to reserect that thread again.
-
Burt I seem to remember that thread and boy was it heated. Some were called unethical , criminals for 5 minutes,

Any deer taken legally is is a trophy. We get too hung up on this site with other peoples ethics. Don't shoot does, Don't shoot small bucks, You should pass on this and pass on that. Only shoot mature bucks. Do you see where I am going with this? Pretty soon we should shoot nothing at all, remember the license you buy from the DEC is for hunting and you can shoot anything that is legal be it a doe, buck, small or large it's your choice. Depending what DMU you are in, so don't have someone rain on your parade if you shoot a small buck if it's what you want it's your choice period. Good luck hunting to everybody.

Geno, not putting anyone down, anyone can shoot what whey want as long as it's legal. The point I was trying to make, which didn't come out right was if you hunt an area and know that there are large bucks there you can be selective and wait and pass up on the smaller ones because sooner or later you will probably get your big buck. In areas that don't hold larger bucks many hunters will shoot a lesser buck. Because it wouldn't matter how long they wait that big buck will never be there. No argument, just can't shoot bigger deer if you don't have them in your area to shoot. Example there are a few guys in our camp who will not shoot anything but a trophy deer. They haven't taken a deer in the past 10 years maybe more but I only know them for the past 10 yrs. Their last big deer was a monster 7 pt taken in the late 1980's
-
Geno its not fair to compare you passing up on smaller bucks on Long Island where you know there are much bigger bucks running around. My pals hunt Long Island and they have a 6 pt rule or better and they all tag out every year. Why because there are lots of bigger bucks there. Now the guys up north don't have the opportunities you have , no farms and lots of woods deer with little to eat makes for fewer big deer and less opportunity to get one. You can only hunt what your area has to offer. Don't compare apples to oranges and I live on long Island and hunt up north no comparison. This is not to criticize it's just different on long island and the racks are much bigger and more of them.

I've had that same thought for years, need to keep a hacksaw in the car. problem is driving 65mph on rt 17 west it's hard to stop usually already passing deer when you see the head or can't see head at all.
-
I think they are talking about just removing the antlers not the head. can get some nice rattleing horns cheap.
-
Karp, where do you teach?
-
I think the outcome would have been different if you left the deer in the woods. Then called the DEC, when they arrived I would bring them to the spot where the dead deer was and if the DEC wanted the deer let them drag the deer out of the woods. At that point I think they would have given you that deer, as long as you didn't volenteer to drag the deer out of the woods for the DEC. They couldn't make you drag the deer and i doubt they would call another DEC officer to remove the deer. Just my opinion, but you did the right thing the DEC didn't.
-
John I think you hunt not far from me, I am just north of Callicoon. Have you been up this past weekend and if so is the rut started yet?
-
will trade deer management permit for long island 1C for one in 4W
