growalot
Corn planted in our area...and packed in tight...12-15 in rows and 2-4 in spacing...I asked one of the big testing/fertilizing plants why....they said its to increase tonnage for chopping....so every thing around here will be chopped...the equipment to harvest the corn for kernels is too big to make it between the rows...least this is what I was told....I wonder what effect this will have on harvest dates....will they need more or less time for dry down? The one field directly in front of us...50ft away....was fallow and they no tilled it...well the Round up didn't do much and the corn got off to a slow spotty start....not knee high and many bald areas mixed into the field after the second spray down....talk about perfect bedding /hiding areas...some bigger than our house...with everyone planting the corn so very close...this field will be a great haven for the deer especially racked buck to hang out in...I'll see if I can get some pics to show... growalot
I hope not that late...usually they hit the fields in early to mid Oct....here's a couple of pics I mentioned...I could see a nice buck having room to hide all day in some of these spots....He planted the whole hill like this with basically the same results....all other corn fields put in after discing by other farmers are as thick as can beand much farther along.... landtracdeerhunter
The big growers around here have been planting narrow row spacing for 3 years now. They all harvest for grain with corn heads on combines. Looking at the plant, much shorter, smaller ears, smaller kerrnal, but higher plant-ear population per acre raising yields. The dry down rates, heavily, dependent on weather conditions, seem to be the same. Another wave of modern farming. Ridge planting was one of those waves, not around so much now. Chopping can start here, as early as August. Corns already up to your shoulders in many spots local. Many planted first, second week of May. Another note, sweet corns been out since June 20th,( $5/ dz.) those that planted on black plastic. Deerthug
They planted soybean on my hunting lands. At least I will be able to see deer in there instead of a wall of corn in font of my stand/blind.
SplitG2
with the price of corn and soybeans, farmers are looking for land and packing as much as they can in an acre.
