growalot
Mr. B put the disc back on for me and I was able to disc 4 plots and plant 2...The oats have not arrived yet but I still have another plot to plant...I decided seeing the hemp was an experiment that the drought and deer messed up ...I would take the12#'s I held back with the 8#'s of QH soybeans and try again...the spring planting I had disced then dragged.... then harrowed seed in...there really was a lot of seed that "floated " to the top...OMG Paula thanks a lot for "It"...any how where was I...so this fall planting I disced...fertilized...spread the seed and then dragged...seeded heavy so we'll see...worst case...only turnips will grow...planting those lightly over the top... On the pasture plot......never touched..ground is still rock hard...so diced the dead sod and will drag tomorrow...let it rain then disc ...fertilize ...I limed heavy some time ago....drag and use sod buster radishes..one woodland plot is half shade so used the hemp and beans just to see how they would do...will over seed with turnips Now that will bring me to the two woodland plots...both will get oats...with rape and some turnips....The one area I need to keep the deer on our land before they hit the corn field...it is a long narrow road way that Ts and the upright goes straight to the corn...has a koi pond water tank and also HSG going right up under a stand leading to the corn field .,...the other part goes behind the house....... winding towards the road and our land across the street..great cover and no hunting area ...because the hunters camp is too close to our house...safe zone leading straight to our pines and plots and watering tanks...The other woodland plot is long winding and narrow and connects two bigger plot...the main one and the clover woodland plot.... The deer should have some good eats for late winter they sure had slim pickings this spring/summer...all other plots were over seed in Rape and turnips...they have started spouting and looking good...but the worms are still bad and really damaged the clover /chicory plot...pics are what plots had in them in the pastor in planting phase Edited July 29, 2012 by growalot

burmjohn
You have a lot of plots! I wish I had some more cleared land to grow, its so intimidating trying to clear land yourself that is suitable for growing.
growalot
Yes 13 small plots....and I did them by myself...so if it is looking tough John....say this to your self....if a middle aged woman can do it...so can I ...lol...Seriously though, take it one section at a time and ad to it every year until you get what you want....if you notice in the pics my plots are all differently shaped....some to string the deer along to other plots....some with access on only 2 sides...some rectangle others almost round...Deer don't really care...as long as you have cover for them to run to and water around...just have fun doing it...for all my complaints...I do
Pav2704
Wow... your plots look great!!! Lots of hard work!!! Quick question... do oats gets sewn like corn or can you spread them with a seeder?
growalot
Thanks but those are old plots...all of that is now disced and planted in other things...I do a annual /perennial crop rotation....... Well spreading my corn and discing it in is how I plant any how...but what I do for the smaller grains is disc deep spread moderately heavy and then harrow in as I drag the plots..it's always worked out pretty well for me...I tend to seed heavy on all my plots because of the turkey ...crow and grackles ...after that I will over seed with turnips in one and alfalfa and clover in another
