Public land in southern zone

I recently moved to NYC and am in need of some advice on public land options to hunt. I am especially interested in bow hunting and haven't ruled out rural areas. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

ya moved to the wrong place for big bucks...LOL. No kidding aside here. I'd travel upstate a ways and see if you can find some small tracts and ask permission to bow hunt. Some areas have a real problem with deer population and would be happy to give you permission. It may take a while and it may not happen this year.

Sterling Forest in 3P is not too far (less than an hour ride) from NYC. Wouldn't be a bad place for bow. It turns into a complete zoo during rifle season though. To hunt there you need to get a special Sterling Forect permit from the park office.

Another good area to check out for bow hunting is in Ellenville area of Ulster / Sullivan County. Route 208 north off of Route 17. Travel down to Route 52 i believe and make a left around the resevoir, make a right at the high school and follow up to Moores Hill Road, Huge chuck of state land, no doe permits allocated in this area so there are a lot of deer (legal to take a doe with your bow). I hunted there for many years. Also turkey, bear, bobcat, coyote all legal. It itfairly hilly and doesnt get pounded bow season...gun is a different story.

Thanks, i'll look into these. Been checking them out on some topo maps but I think i'll head out and do some wandering aroundthis weekend. Again thanks for the suggestions!

don't rule out long island.

in the 50's I hunted for ducks and deer and pheasants out and around the grumman plant.

granted things change in 60 some odd years but I am certain the woodlots on "the island" are still holding deer for archers to pursue.
