loworange88
Hey everyone, My wife and I are expecting our second child to be born at the end of March 2013. I currently am using the "spare" bedroom as the room where I keep my guns and ammo stored. Well in about 5 months, I'll be forced to either move the gun locker either to the down stairs living room(split level home) where we have a woodstove, OR to the basement that is not finished. Our basement is pretty dry, I run a dehumidifier all year down there and its usually always at 40% relative humidity. I guess my question is, what would be the better place to put the locker? The downstairs living room is a decent size room, but when the wood stove has a fire going, it can get upto 90 degrees down there, I know since I have a thermometer down there. Will that sort of temperature change cause any issues with the steel of the guns? The temp change can go from 72 to upwards of 90 fairly quickly if I have that stove roaring. So with all that, where would be the better of the 2 places to put them? Thanks.
ants
If your basement is dry, like you say, put them there, close to the furnace. Thats where mine are. I keep a couple of those "silica gel" boxes in the bottom of the gun locker, for good measure. I have never had a problem. The silica gel boxes absorb moisture. Gander has them for about 10-15 bucks. They also have small moisture control units that run on batteries but they cost more. Plus ... you can recharge the gel boxes by just putting them in the oven, although I have never had to. Good luck.
jusputtn
I use a plug in wand in wand in my locker. $25? and no recharge worries. Steel doesn't start to weaken until it hits 800 degrees. I'd be more.concerned with the wood stocks. Is it still that hot on the far side of the room?
Guns&ReligionCop
I keep a low watt bulb lit in my safe all the time just to keep it a dry steady temp. never have problems in my damp basement like that
