JRW
Quick update! I now completed Hunters safety, i have my hunting license plus a DMP for section 8P. One of my friends may let me hunt on his land in that area, and if not there are two parks you can hunt (Pigtail and Urbana) I have some of my girlfriends grandfathers guns stored at her moms house in the Elmira NY area. I have a cleaning kit to make sure they are in good shape and hope to clean then and take them to the range soon.
Sogaard
Sounds like you're well on your way. Taking those guns out to the range to get a feel for them and get them sighted in is a very important step. It's always nice to meet another hunter from the city. (Born and raised in Bay Ridge, live in SI now.)
Two Track
Jason, You can hunt parts of Long Island, or go up to Putnam County, or cross the Hudson and go up to Orange County to Stewart buffer lands by Newburgh (zone 3m), or get a permit ($5) to hunt in Sterling Forest by Tuxedo (zone 3P, or apply for a deer permit for WestPoint (zone 3P). If you go to the Stewart buffer lands, it is shotgun and archery only. NO RIFLES including rimfires. They have rabbits, squirrels, deer, turkey, ducks, pheasants, groundhogs, and snapping turtles. You do have to watch out for the occasional mountain biker who ignore the hunters only signs during deer season. Sterling Forest has squirrels, pheasants, turkey, deer, ducks, bear, foxes and coyotes. Hunt off-trail to avoid day-hikers in the early part of the season. Some portions of Sterling Forest are archery only. If Sterling Forest sounds familiar to you, that may be because of the NY Renaissance Fair is held on a portion of the property. Parts of West Point are shotgun only, others areas allow rifle. Must register at fire control center each day you hunt and sign out when done. If you are into archery, there are some areas in Westchester county to get you a little close to home. If you are using a shotgun, get a couple snap caps. Practice dry-firing with them to avoid the flinch some people develop in anticipation for the kick of a gun. When you actually take a shot at a deer the first-time, you will not feel anything due the excitement of your first deer shot. Good luck out there. Always err on the side of caution, and welcome to the forum.
AaronBlaine
welcome brotha! I too came from a family that was mostly into fishing. Out of just about nowhere it crept into my veins and has become an obsession! Your going to find any information you could ever ask for on this site! The people are cool as all hell and as deerthug mentioned it really is like a brotherhood. I met friends that I go hunting with off of this site and it helps us guys meet other people who are interested in this wonderful sport. Its so funny listening to everyone bitch and moan about the summer ending. Meanwhile I have been waiting patiently as come October 1st the adventure begins all over again!!!
