TeeBugg
Ive always wanted to travel out of state to try turkey hunting in other states. Anybody have an opinion on which states to try? Thinking i may set up a couple trips for next spring. Ohio, pennsylvania seem close enough but what about other states around ny? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Uncle Nicky
Just my $02, but if you want a high-quality out-of-state hunt, I would go to one of the southern or mid-west states.
Fantail
I'm sure PA has good birds. Used to hear from some friends in PA about them and lots of does, the no Sunday thing etc.

fishuntrapper
i suspect all states that have birds, have "good" birds. i have killed good birds in pa, ar, and sc. the delima i have with hunting pa, and in oh (although i have not hunted in ohio yet) is that the seasons open so close together. which isnt the problem really, the problem lies in the fact i still need a job. and having a job means limited time during the open seasons in these states. i think uncle nicky may have the right ideal. i was able to hunt in sc this spring mainly because the season opened on april 1. that is the same with many if not all southern and mid-west states, thier seasons open earlier than in the northern states. some states have a march opener. also some southern states allow more than 2 birds per season while also allowing more than one bird harvested per day. sc has a five bird season limit and you can take 2 per day if you want. if hunting south is not an option, imo pa or oh is your best bet. the states more east seem to have very complicted regs. and hard to find land to hunt. hope this helps and good luck and let us know where you are going to go. Uncle Nicky
I live in PA, and to be honest with you, I'd rather turkey hunt in NY. My biggest beef about this state is you can't hunt Sundays. With my work schedule, that means burning up more vacation days, or driving 70 miles on a Saturday, hunting from 5-noon, then turning back around & driving 70 miles home (but we just started having all-day hunting the last 2 weeks of the season). We get 1 turkey tag with a license, unless you buy another BEFORE the season opens. There are a LOT of turkey hunters in this state, and getting private land access is tough unless you know someone. The terrain where you find birds here is just like NY...mountain ridges. On the plus side, there are a lot of birds in this state, and a lot of public land. If you're willing to hike in far enough, you should be able to get some elbow room. Just my $.02...good luck wherever you decide to go.
