army worms this year wire worms and they got most of my corn...I was afraid of this but hoped for the best...now I need to figure out what to do to save the clover plots and the fall plots...If it's not one thing it's another...added a link ...interesting read......

Yikes, that don't look good. I hope you can salvage your stuff.

 

We just did a 2 acre plot of this 3 weeks ago http://store.evolved.com/home/products/harvest/annuals/73029.aspx

It's doing good so far. My dad told me there was 7 bucks in it a few nights ago. We just overseeded it yesterday with some rye grass. Hopefully if we have these wire worms, they will be deeper than our roots by now. I'm wondering if that's what is meddling with our taters.

 

1 1/2 acre fall plot will be going in by the first week in Aug.

I knew we have had them for a few years...find them when planting the garden,,,but when the corn came in very spotty after a heavy planting I dug up a few kernels...they all had those hard shelled tan worms in them.....the rain and cool spring didn't help matters...lol this "chess game" is getting challenging and expensive...

I wonder if the lovely preened trails are creating some prime propagating grounds for them! LOL

I  like to use the method of planting alfalfa in a field for several years to control these pest.  Hope u can find a successful method for control. One of the constant battles in growing.

Last year I was talking with one of the local tater farmers...we were talking about the blight and NYS ag policies and pests...OMG he told me about the spray program that has to be used in order for the taters to look so good in the stores and survive the blights...I eat very very few now....Which I know is the way of most every thing  but needs to be

In the past 2 years our potatoes have done very well. They don't look too bad yet. I know there is a doe with twins that have been browsing on them a little. The soggy conditions haven't helped much either.

Well  I have the Sevin concentrated spray...It says it's good on wire worm....checking for rain and the spaying of plots and the garden will commence..also the Japanese beetle are plentiful...so much for the expensive nature grub killer I laid down a few years ago...spraying for weeds as well if no rain...I plant the corn as a visual cover...this weather has really helped fill out the pines but this fall I'm transplanting quince and plum whips to fill in the gaps...then the corn will go into a annual rotation....
