So according to DEC website I can hunt squirrel pretty much anywhere after November 1. HOW, I was under the impression you couldn't even discharge a bow in the city within 500 feet of a residence and you cant hunt in any of the parks in Nassau.

Am I missing something?

Vince1, you cannot discharge anything, not even bodily fluids, in NYC at all so unless you own a falconry license, forget about hunting in NYC. As far as squirrels go, season opens September 1st in any area that allows hunting. There are plenty of areas you can hunt squirrels near NYC. Go to the DEC website and Dow load their google maps add on and highlight any area that allows hunting. You can also hunt certain DEP land. DEP land must be obtained from DEP website. We also put together a squirrel hunting party every once in a while on this forum. Several of us do it just to meet up and catch up with fellow hunters. It's also a good way to introduce new hunters as well.

What about target practice from a tree stand. I live in queens and it would be nice to know aa place that dont take two hours to get to

Vince, in case Elmo wasn't clear enough(pretty clear to me) you cannot target practice any firearm or bow or air gun in the city's limits, and this includes city owned property located outside of the city. The 500' rule doesn't really need to apply here, because there is NO shooting of any kind allowed in NYC.

If you really want to shoot and not travel far, look into archery ranges, pistol ranges located in the city. There are a few. But you will be disappointed if you are looking to shoot past 25 yards.

Blue Mountain is but an hr from where you are, and you can shoot out to 200 yards if you wanted to down to 25 or so yards as well. It's $11 per hr.

Unless you are waterfowl hunting in Nassau county, you can forget about shooting there as well. There is NO hunting other than waterfowl in Nassau.

I hope this information has helped.

PS, the file you downloaded is a google earth file, and awesome tool if you do not already have it.

A KMZ file is a overlay file which Google Earth will open. Start Google Earth go to file, open, go to where you downloaded the file click on it. It will overlay the info onto the globe.

As far as hunting on Long Island, Nassau is very very difficult but in Suffolk you can fare better except the season on Long Island doesn't start until October except for a tiny park way out east called Napeague State Park which as far as I can tell is squirrless but Bunnyful! Hunting with an air rifle now that it is legal seems to be the way to go, but then I'm not a bow hunter.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the info. Yeah i got the nyc part and aftrr looking arround and calling dec. Wildlife i have come to the conclusioni cant target practice at all even in season. Which is wierd cause i see vids of people target shooting from tree stands.

So is that a private land thing in ny?

Is there no where i can put up my treestand and practice? A coworker was telling me bout a farmer she knows on long island whos crop whre destroyed so i guess i could go take a drive and barter vermin control.

Just dont want the first shot i take from a treestand to be on a deer

What are you shooting from a stand that you feel you need practice with? If a bow, then you will need to use some math and figure it out.

If you are planning to place a stand on public/state land, I'm sure you can shoot your bow once your stand is set in place. You only need a couple shots to confirm your mathematical calculations. There's also range finders available now that can do the math for you.

If you plan to shoot a firearm in public land, that's a no-no in most of the southern zone. If caught defacing state property, you'll be facing a summons.

People who practice off of treestands on their property live outside of these restricted areas.  You can also take your treestand out into public land that does allow hunting, setup a target and practice there.  Unfortunately, that's what the law states.

Coincidently, a lady was shot with an arrow a couple of years ago in my neighborhood.

Parks dont allow target practice, at least the ones i called. And i shoot traditional any shot i take will be under 15 yards and im more of a need to practice guy.

Right now i practice in my home for the most part. Floyd bennet field has a range i can eadily get to, would just feel wierd takin my ladder out there. But it looks like i dont have much of a choice.
