Early
Caught a hefty 17+" smallmouth bass today. Found a weird object...claylike cylindrical pellet, 7/8" long and 1/2" in diameter completely encapsulated in one fillet. Any idea what I found? Fish safe to eat? apoallo
take a picture and upload it. If you have doubts you can report It to the DEC and Im sure they would test it..

shawnhu
If its in the meat, I'd discard it. Plenty of fish in the sea.
Early
No reply from DEC on this (Surprise...Surprise!!). Best guess by a retired fish biologist is that the fish suffered a puncture wound (heron or kingfisher)...the wound was filled with silt/grit, and the flesh healed around it. Whatever, some real nice meat ended up in the garbage.
crappyice
Pretty cool explanation by the biologist - that's one tough fish...good move chucking it though
