Weird Find In A Fish

Caught a hefty 17+" smallmouth bass today.  Found a weird object...claylike cylindrical pellet, 7/8" long and 1/2" in diameter completely encapsulated in one fillet.  Any idea what I found?  Fish safe to eat?

If its in the meat, I'd discard it. Plenty of fish in the sea.

No reply from DEC on this (Surprise...Surprise!!). Best guess by a retired fish biologist is that the fish suffered a puncture wound (heron or kingfisher)...the wound was filled with silt/grit, and the flesh healed around it. Whatever, some real nice meat ended up in the garbage.
