pan
Dear Friends, It’s always been difficult starting a new hobby especially if you don’t have any friends or family members who shares same passion. I've been fishing for 34 years and last year decided to expend my adventures by taking a hunting course and getting a hunting license. The first question I had (as probably the most people who just started) is where to hunt. Most people I been talking to belongs to a hunting clubs and/or hunting on the private properties. Again, since I don’t have any hunter friends with the land and waiting time to become a member in the clubs is very long I decided to explore a public places to hunt. I live in Rockland County and the closest place to me is Sterling Forest. Since I don’t have any experience I been reading a lot of posts on the internet on how to do scouting and see the signs of the deer and then spent hours in the woods but till today no luck of even seeing a deer. I definitely doing something wrong and looking for someone who can guide me in the right direction. I’m well organized and for me the safety is always first so I promise not to cause any problems if anyone is willing to give me live lessons. The hunting traditions should be continued and I promise to return same favor to any new hunter in the future. Thank you all in advance for your time and advice. Some good people near you that hunt that property, just hope they have time to show you the ropes. Vince1
I just started this year myself. started scouting in like july / august in sterling. from all the scouting and studying the topos I saw deer about 3 different times in sterling during bow season and I hunted every weekend. Never got close enough to take a shot. I was advised the best time to scout is right after the season ends when there is snow on the ground and tracking is easier. for now i was told to just pick an intersecting trail and set up there and pray i get lucky. I don't gun hunt so im in Westchester now with NO scouting done at all prior to going in. walking down a trail at night leaving the woods i saw a deer and he looked me dead in the high beam never saw one during the day though. all i can say for what i have seen of sterling is what was told to me find a trail that was heavily used and set up their, worked (kinda) as i got two good sightings but moved out after bow ended (only hunt on sundays). gonna go back for late muzzle MAYBE as im starting to like westchester

Catskill Hunter
Consider hunting NJ since Sterling is on the border of it, you might find an open club there. Can shoot more deer too :-)

the blur
Parts of Sterling are AR. So carefully decide where you want to hunt.
