Unknown black spots

A friend of mine shot a yearling doe on Long Island.  When butchering he noticed these black spots on the fat of the deer.  Does anyone have a clue what this is?  He is going to bring it to Ridge in the next couple of days so they can determine what it is, but I thought maybe someone here had a clue what it is.

Maybe an old wound, but not really sure. Looks a tad off- putting. Are those the only spots?

Where was the fat with black spots located on the deer ? Very strange.

That is a pre scapular lymph node if he found it in the sliver of fat right behind the shoulder, definitely a lymph node...not sure why they are discolored, how long had the deer hung?

This is a healthy fresh node from one of my harvest in October that I had to process right away because of warm conditions:

I have a set of shoulders that's been hanging 8 days...I will check the nodes to see if they darkened when I butcher them tonight.

Curiosity made me check one of these shoulders...shot this doe 11/25...shoulder has been hanging since:

The filet knife is pointing to the fat sliver where the pre-scapular lymph node resides:

This node is not nearly as pink as my fresh pic from October, but it is also no where near as black as your friends.

The deer was hung for about 36 hours.

Wasn't there something put out by the DEC on a new disease they were tracking...wanting info on harvests?.....I'd give them a call and ask...

It may be a hemal node...where on the deer was it...shoulder, loins, straps ?

I was going to say the lymph node on the shoulder but I see Meat Manager beat me to it. The blackness is odd especially when everything else has good color.
