Incumbent George Maziarz drops out of 62nd  Senate District race. Apparently Gia Arnold gathered enough petitions to run in the primary, however the republican party is not endorsing her, they are endorsing Rob Ortt, the current mayor of N. Tonawanda. Arnold says she is still going to run in the primary against the republican endorsee.

So, we need to send questionnaires/surveys  to Arnold; Ortt; and any democrats who are also running for the state senate 62nd district...

Here is an article about Ortts announcement he is running:

  • 3 weeks later...

Others need to begin pitching in. I found some more information.

Robert Sweeney Assembly District 11, who headed the assembly environmental conservation committee is retiring. So does anyone know who will become the new chairmen?  His district averages 32,000 voting democrats and 17,000 voting republicans. No official candidates but the republicans are indicating their candidate might be Shawn Cullinane or Nick Lalota. (Is that the guy who got busted dumping bird carcasses?). The Democrats say they may endorse either Thomas Donnelley, Jacqueline Gordon, or Tony Martinez.

Consult the below map to see if you vote in this district:

I think more hunters/ gun owners are motivated to vote this year than ever before but  I STILL run into people that have no clue about the SAFE Act which boggles my mind. Thankfully I have Finch and Seward, some of the best guys in Albany but hopefully you guys in questionable districts can help get rid of some of these bums!

Correct about Finch, he voted Pro-DEC by voting no on A08790. However, James Seward, from state senate district 51 voted Yes on S-06589 and therefore Anti-DEC. As a matter of fact, 61 out of 63 state senators voted anti-dec  and only 25 out of 150 assembly reps voted Pro-DEC. The two senators that did not vote anti-dec had better things to do that afternoon and decided not to go into work and bother to vote , so therefore we rate the entire state senate anti-dec.

The proposal passed both houses and we have a petition to veto this new law you can check it out on this link: http://nydovehunting.weebly.com/mute-swans.html

As I said several times, someone should take up this project for NY state reps, I am not going to.

It is the responsibility of each voter to do some very minimal research into the candidates in their own district. We try to spoon feed the info here as much as possible and do as much as is practical, given that we all have our own lives to conduct. But at some point it comes down to an individual voter duty to learn as much as possible about the candidates they are going to be voting for. Nobody wants an electorate that is going to rely on others to form their opinions for them. There comes a time when voters have to put on their big-boy britches and take on the civic duties that our system of government demands of them. I have tried to post items that will help them wind their way through that initial, somewhat complex process of registration, and determine voting districts and legislators. But beyond that, there comes a time for each individual to engage their own brain and form some actual personal opinions and gather some actual information that relates to their own situations and needs. That time is now. They needn't be reliant on others to do this for them.

The video wouldn't load for some reason. Can you fill me in on this "pro/anti DEC"?

I agree, but there is a disproportionate amount of attention going to the governor's race when there were others who have as much or more responsibility for the SAFE Act and/or are more hostile toward hunting them Cuomo.

NY state legislature is comprised of  212 lawmakers in both chambers. Of those 212, 188 voted Anti-DEC, the last day of the legislative session. Many of those 188 are probably STILL endorsed by the NRA, SCOPE, etc... Sportsman who rely on those organizations are not informed about this. Many (most) will not research further an/or are completely loyal to the NRA or SCOPE and will not scrutinize any information they receive from them. As a result, hostile incumbents who are being challenged may be retained because hunters "vote NRA" or 'vote republican" across the board. Or they merely reward lawmakers who voted against the SAFE Act, but otherwise have voted against us. For example, Tom Libious , a republican representing the Binghamton area will show on his voting record that he voted against the SAFE Act. However, if you dig deeper, Libious was instrumental in getting the SAFE Act out of committee by voting for it in the first round, were his vote would be less visible, then voted differently on the floor vote. Two campaign workers for other republicans had told me Libious wrote the SAFE Act, but that is what I was told, not what I said. I was also told that Dean Skelos and Brian Klein used a legal mechanism usually reserved for extreme states of emergency, such as terrorism or a major weather event to expedite the legislative process and move the SAFE Act very quickly.

It would be wise to develop a "closer to home" grassroots information clearing house, perhaps off of this site instead of depending on national organizations and big state organizations.

Arnold dropped out of the race so it is just Ortt. Now Ortt faces democrat Johnny Destino from Niagara Falls in the general election.

As I previously stated, Robert Sweeney, the assembly environmental conservation chairman is RETIRING. Since the en-con chair has the power to stall bills until they expire; as occurred  with one of the crossbow bills; who is appointed to chair is something we have a major stake in.

I did some research and verified that the en-con chair in the assembly will indeed be appointed by the speaker, that is Sheldon Silver.

I am trying to figure a way sportsmen can influence Silver's decision in this matter. Is there any history of sportsmen influencing this appointment? Is there any ideas out there?

Guy was burglarized about two weeks prior, they found a bunch of his stuff at one of the suspects home. Guys was so poor, he couldnt afford water or electricity,  so the county took his home from him as well. Case study in why this states pistol permit laws are so messed up, if he couldnt afford water and electricity, how was he going to afford to register the family heirloom his late father left to him? By all accounts, he would have passed the background check, he just couldnt afford the process financially.

County DA said it was inappropriate to charge him with a felony,  if anything he would only go misdemeanor as he was just defending himself in his own home. Sheriff didnt even want to arrest him. Troopers got involved and threw the book at this poor man.

I know the law is the law, but what the hell happened to prosecutorial discretion? It sounds like the damn pistol never left the house, and would have never left the bedroom had his life not been threatened.

      Details coming soon!

As mourning doves expand northward Canadian Providences are instating hunting seasons. British Columbia has hunted doves for some time. Southern Ontario instated a season in 2014, and now Quebec. There is also a pending proposal in Manitoba and discussion elsewhere.

Air Shotguns add a new dimension to dove hunting. Note the comment about the overhead utility lines, we are going to recommend the DEC prohibits dove hunting within gun range of lines to prevent damage to them. They are taking Eurasian collared doves, which are similar to our native mourning doves. They are spreading and it is not too uncommon to find this introduced dove across NY. The impacts of ECD are not known at this point.
