wooly
That's awesome, and you even got the EXIF data logged- good for you getting out there with the camera again and paying attention to your cameras vitals! When I started out shooting a 200mm, I would get really frustrated going to photography forums and seeing the great long range close-ups everyone was taking with their 400,500, and 600mm prime lenses. I thought once I got my 300mm F5.6 that I could compete with the big boys, but boy was I ever wrong. Once I figured out how to get closer to the critters instead of stretching my lens is when I REALLY started enjoying nature photography and the results I was getting with budget gear! You've obviously got the passion for it, and I bet you'd do real well to jump right in with both feet now! Nice thing about cameras is you can hunt with one 365 days a year and all those encounters are valuable lessons once actual "hunting season" rolls around. Looking forward to more pics from you...... I want to see 5 different bucks from you by Monday, don't let me down, lol
philoshop
Thanks Wooly. I got to within about 30 yds of him and decided not to push it any further. He was only about 20 yds from my best treestand and I'd rather not 'educate' him if I can help it. Getting close is half the fun, though. I've taken a couple decent bucks over the years that ended up with powder burns on them. LOL I shot about a hundred frames yesterday just playing with some settings and taking notes. It was a great day for experimenting: bright/sunny, hazy, rain, fog/mist... I'm surprised at how quickly everything's coming back to me. Now if I can just get my right eyeball fixed so that I don't have to rely so heavily on the AF.
jrm
Thanks everyone! I had a little accident on some slippery rocks in the creekbottom last week. It put a serious hurtin' on my camera that only leaves me with two options anymore.... AUTO mode, or Apperature priority mode which is locked in at high(800) ISO. I can't change the settings now which kind of limits me and doesn't allow me to review my shots in the field. It still works, but I blow a lot of shots because of it. Not sure which model your camera is. I know some cameras have software which allows you to adjust the settings on your computer. It will not help you in the field (unless you tether to a laptop) but might allow you to create different settings in advance.
