Early bear

So with the start of early bear season there is a bigger dilemma on how to care for your meat after the bear is down. It was

in the high 80's this weekend and I saw some reports of bear being taken. I would imagine you kill the bear, gut it and get it to the nearest cooler (processor) around ASAP. I saw some pictures of bears hanging and actually you can see flies on the bear. I think when hunting early season you must have a game plan especially if the shot is not good and you recover the next day. I'm sure the meat would not be consumable.

Are processors open for business yet? You might be completely on your own as far as getting that thing into a cooler. And your point about tracking a wounded bear into the next day is a valid one. We keep pushing big-game seasons earlier and earlier toward the hot summer months without a single thought about recovery problems and what the temperatures can do to the meat.

 

I think at this time of the year I would have game bags in my pack to stop the fly infestations.

I got off from maine bear hunting a week ago. If you got one and you didn't have to search for it. They had in a cooler with in a hr to an hr and half.
