Just wounder if anyone here has picked up a sporterized

Old military rifle and put it back to the way it was

As a proud military rifle.

I just finished one. And had a lot of fun looking

For all the parts , complete stock and hardware

Took some time .but what a great shooter it is.

I will be looking for another one I am sure

I will post a pic later

Some people think the SMLEs are ugly..I think they are ruggedly handsome..

I consider many of the MODERN selective fire military arms BUTT-UGLY...

Presently all of my milsurps are as issued, with one exception..I have a M48 Yugo in 8x57 that I installed a MOJO peep sight on, because my old eyes no longer work well open sights.. It mounts on the rear sight base.. I kept the original rear sight so that I can put it back on the rifle if I want to..I am also considering installing an aftermarket trigger on it, because the issue trigger is AWFUL...Heavy and creepy..

speeking of ugly I think my next return mite be a mod 99. 7.7+58 .

Yeah some rifles are difficult make attractive, like the M/N  and the Italian Carcanos..

 

Good luck with your Jap..I suspect it will be tougher to find parts to restore it than it was with the SMLE..

 

I have two Japs, both bringbacks...I have a Type 99 7.7  that is pretty nice, all matching parts and missing only the cleaning rod and dust cover.. The other is a type 38 6.5 and it has a mismatched bolt  but is all original except for that..  I have never shot either rifle..They are currently on display at my American Legion post, along with my Long Branch SMLE, My Oberndorf 1938  K98K and a M/N that I believe was captured and rearsenaled by the Finns in the 1939 Winter War in Finland..

No , dang it, mine does not have the aircraft leader sights or the monopod...I think it is mid war production, after they had quit doing the aircraft sights but before the "last ditch" models where they really cut corners..It is quite well made and has the chrome lined bore.

I have read that in practice that the aircraft sights didn't work very well..Understandable, trying to hit a fast flying airplane with a rifle !

Every old military rifle has a story to tell

They are a rich part of our history every bit as much as any state blue and gold sign along our highway s. That say George Washington was hear. They need to be saved. Some brave Serviceman carryed it into battle.

This is a bit off topic, but let me tell you a sad story about a couple of SMLEs.

My buddy Gator in Canada had two them and they were both beauties. One was a WWI vintage (1915) #1, and it was one of the cleanest, nicest specimens I have ever seen..

The other was a late Long Branch manufacture #4, never issued..When he got it it was still in the mummy wrap.

This was when the gun registration was in effect in Canada, and guns were selling cheap, because many people who owned them did not want to go through the hassle and expense of registering them..Gator offered to sell me BOTH rifles for $300.

I planned to use the unissued rifle as a shooter, and I wanted the #1 just because it was such a nice historical specimen.

I looked into buying them and importing them into the states...Because of the fact that they were MILITARY rifles, there was so much hassle and expense on the US side that I decided it was not worth it..<<<SIGH>>>...
