BizCT
Got a late start this year. Didn't put any cams out until I put 2 cams out on Labor Day (9/7). Same 8 acre property we always hunt in 3N Putnam county. The 2 cams are about 200 yards apart, one is the trail I watch when I hunt from my spot and the other is the trail my dad watches when from his spot. One 8 point looks pretty nice and I got lots of daytime pics of him, from both cams. Wondering if maybe he's the 8 point we had pics of last year. BizCT
I'm thinking he's 3.5 and the same buck as this guy from last year with the short nubby brow points? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Ricky 86
Nice pics- nice seeing another fellow hunting in the woods and not the edge of a food plot. Cool looking stone wall in the background- good luck out there
BizCT
Yea this area is loaded with stone walls. They run forever Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
mxsmitz201
If your referring to the 8 point in the close up pics to the one from last year, those are 2 different deer and definitely look to be year and a halfs. But the buck walking across the cam a bit further back looks to be a pretty decent buck.

Every 8 point we ever took the butcher was 3.5 according to DEC who is there pulling teeth. Very rarely do the 1.5s even get to 4pts around us. Napping in the woods
From my experience over the past few years in the area, there isn't a whole lot of meat on many deer in Putnam, and I'm sure the last few winters caused all of them a set back in the meat development department. It probably didn't thin the herd out much, but I'm sure their reserves were exhausted. Here's hoping a there are a more in the woods of north-central putnam this year. Good luck. NYBowhunter
At most that last buck is a 2 1/2yr. Old.
brownclown
. Very rarely do the 1.5s even get to 4pts around us. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk i hunt the same area and this just simply is not true.
BizCT
i hunt the same area and this just simply is not true. I'm not talking about Putnam in general. I'm talking about this specific area of 8 acres we hunt. My dad has shot several 7-9pointers, and whenever the DEC is Amatos butcher they say 3.5 for the most part, only a couple were 2.5. I thought for sure my 8 pointer in 2007 was a 1.5 but DEC at Amatos told me 3.5 based on the tooth. DEC told me 2.5 on this 4pt from 2012 If this 8 pointer on the cam this year is 1.5 that would be great. I think he's at least 2.5 though. brownclown
I'm talking about this specific area of 8 acres we hunt. not trying to be a troll but that is not possible..unless your hunting an 8 acre high fenced area.
meatmuzzy
all of those deer are 1.5 years old
BizCT
not trying to be a troll but that is not possible..unless your hunting an 8 acre high fenced area. I'm just going by the 30+ bucks we have taken off this property since 1993 and what the DEC has told us when they pulled teeth. I'm not an expert on deer aging by any means. I'm simply going off of past experiences. If this 8 pointer is a 1.5 that's great. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
BizCT
The 8 pointer to me does not look the same age, as these smaller bucks from the same exact location. This 8pt from last year looks older than the deer above. But maybe I'm wrong? Again, I'm not expert just judge based on previous history with DEC Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
mxsmitz201
I really think the dec are wrong in what they have told you IMO. Aging deer by looking at the teeth is really only accurate in determining if it's under 2 or not because they'll hAve one less molar or something. Can't remember exactly what it is but there is a tell tale sign. After that you really need to pull a front tooth and have it tested in a lab. I would think the dec would know what they are talking bout especially if determining if it's under 2 yrs old. But then again you never know, but I really really believe that 4 point is a yr and a half right along with the spike used for body size comparison right along with your 8 in the OP.
