growalot
I decided not to go out ..it is pretty windy and I saw temps were to go up pretty fast..figure with tomorrows rains and snow tire rotation I'd clean trails today...so much for best laid plans...I leave the house at 7:40 to go retrieve my scent drag I forgot last night and pull cards down there...No bow or anything just a quick run down...I come across fawns that just won't move...I keep walking but they stand their ground watching me...as I'm about to hit the plot past our drive, I see a pool of blood. My first thought was maybe the cat wasn't dead and got away injured..It was sizable and bright red but looked fresh...So I decide to follow up on to our place and realize nope that is deer...I retrace then try to find trail in other direction...into our corn then nothing...so I marked the pine near it and went out and walked the road and ditches...both sided nothing ...I noted that zero cars were at the neighbors..no skid marks ,hair ,or blood in middle of road...hhhmmmm So fresh looking I came back and gave it an hour while I had some more coffee. I go back up and follow a great blood trail that took me up along the side of our hill..It had stopped and pooled and bedded 2 times in that 200yrd tracking . It was spotty then opened up to lots of blood then went to a drop every 5 to 10 ft...then great...finally towards the end of that hill side one drop and nothing ..I tried everything to find just one more pinhead sized drop. ...So I started a sectional grid...I did the side of hill then the lower section of property . I went above the trail and hit the ridge then walked back through the gully on the other side of ridge...I then circled back and around to hit the top of our place There was a whole lot of thin bright red blood, no hair and poof gone. I tried following soft tracks but it led nowhere. I don't know if it was a late/early morning car hit...though the beds may say different to that, or a bow shot...can't call neighbor for he's the one that won't return a call to me so I could get a retrieval call #. So I don't know if he was hunting yesterday...Though they both came home last night at close so???.. Any ways messed up my plans ..but that was good practice. I do know one thing...it wasn't at least one big deer...for I caught him way out in the shadows of a pic last night ...I also got a pic of the buck I spooked getting out of my stand last night....he came through after I left... the cam is next to blind, but the stand is about 200ft on the other side of him in this pic. I'm thinking it was a doe due to those 3 fawns that wouldn't leave the area...I'm thinking they smelled her blood. I figure the crows or vultures will give it up ,unless it was a brisket car or arrow hit? don't they bleed a lot and bright red? ApexerER
Did the blood trail lead both ways out of the pool you found or just the way you followed....That would drive me crazy having no idea what happened...
growalot
it only went a few feet into the corn that lines our pines, that line the road. This is why I marked the pine tree and then walked the road on both sides the length of that section of property... nothing along sides or on the road it's self. growalot
It won't drive me crazy because over the years I have trailed several wounded deer through our place...usually though they are behind our place 3 times with the guys that shot them...never found......this is only the second on that side of the road.
