Buckmaster7600
Those are some good points. Maybe after this season I'll send it off for a new barrel. I think I'm going to stick with 20 inches if I do. The biggest issue with all of this will be having a stock made. I doubt the barrel profile will match the OEM profile and I can't find a good place that makes 77 stocks to match the slightly shorter barrel. Why not rebore your barrel? pitweiler
If you know someone that will do it, let me know. I couldn't find anyone on the interwebz. I don't think the contour is thick enough to go bigger than .308. Edited October 15, 2017 by pitweiler
stubborn1VT
Not to hijack, but how does the 7mm-08 do with a short barrel? I know some calibers don't like anything under 20". My next rifle will most likely be a 7mm-08 or .308. I need a walking around gun. My 7mm Rem Mag sports a 24", but it's not very handy in the brush. Buckmaster7600
If you decide to go with 338 or 358 this is the guy to use have used him for several rifles and everyone is perfect.http://www.35caliber.com/8.htmlSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Most chamberings based on the .308 do well with short barrels...I never used a 7-08 shorter than 20" but I an guessing it would do fine..I am sure 7600 has had experience with it, since he takes a hacksaw to every rifle he buys....Hehehehe.. A buddy of mine shot a bunch of deer with a TC Encore pistol with a 15 INCH 7mm08 bbl, and they included some at ranges over 200 yards..I never recall him having any problems... Going shorter than 20" is something you have to really want because it's not without drawbacks- noise, balance, loss of velocity, etc. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
stubborn1VT
Thanks for the responses guys. I will keep it in mind. May have to consider a .308 as well. I won't be giving up my 7 Mag, since I'm mostly a "sitter", but I would like a walking around gun one of these days.
pitweiler
Well, looks like my barrel is too skinny for a rebore. Would anyone spend the $$$ for a rebore from .243 to 6.5 Creedmoor or .260 Rem? I'm not sure that's worth it.

pitweiler
That's not a bad idea. I'm gonna go check it. I probably have enough rifle for most NY/Northeastern game as is with a good Barnes or Trophy Copper load. I messaged Barnes and they told me most folks have no problems poking elk, let alone whitetail, black bear or mulies with the 85 TSX. They said one customer just tagged an elk at a touch over 500yds with an 85 TSX. Since NY doesn't have an elk herd....
pitweiler
Even going back to 16.5 in I only have .541 to work with. Staying .243.
