fawns are frequently left alone so teh doe does not leave her scent near it. As humans we project human feelings into situations for them. "Awww the poor animal is left all alone". A baby left alone will perish but usually young of the animal species are far more capable of surviving.

I think this all started with that damn movie Bambi....
