how soon to change string or cable

I must be the cheap guy I soot 4 days or more per week and wax the bow string and cable every week. I get about 3 or 4 years out of a set.

as long as they keep my bow in factory spec and they are in good shape

I wax mine and lube the servings once a month or so, depends on when I feel it needs it really. I got 3 seasons out of my string and cable, switching it out this year. I would have gotten more out of it if it wasnt for a problem with my cam.
