so im in compliance with all laws

Good question, I'd make sure you were not carrying a valid license too! I personally don't think i'd chance someone seeing me walking with what appears to be a rifle, just gives a law abiding citizen a reason to call DEC. I'm not saying you are not, obviously, or you wouldn't post this . I'm sure you would call if you saw someone carrying a rifle out in the field too during archery season.

Just my thoughts,

Why not practice holding the rifle at home, with the rifle unloaded, etc? Maybe take it to the range and practice shooting from the same positions you will be in while hunting? No reason to take it into the woods and create the possibility of problems for yourself. Also, youd better make sure its legal to have a centerfire rifle in the field (loaded or not) during early archery season. As a coyote hunter, I know that I cannot take a centerfire rifle into the field during bow season or even during regular firearms season in an area that does not allow rifles for deer hunting. The only way I can hunt coyotes is with bow, shotgun or rimfire until deer season ends.

without the possibility of shooting you wont have the buck feever like you would have the opportunity to shoot.Just knowing it is "play" you wont be shaking like you would as if you were about to harvist it.

I have seen many deer during off season and i could just sit there and watch them with out ever feeling the butterflies i do like when i see a deer during season when i am hunting them.
