  1. I have, and it can be done....but as a buddy told me when I first moved up there, "Better choose your tree wisely or you'll grow old before you see a deer."
  2. Don't take a shot on a big buck that you wouldn't take on a doe or smaller buck.....don't let rack influence your shotmaking decision.....
  3. NY does have an investment program and recently altered it dramatically to boost revenues....will update in an upcoming issue of New York Outdoor News, but it's substantial and good news for sportsmen and women...
  4. Yes, with a NY license you can leave the state and it is still valid.....that's not the case in Pennsylvania, where a lifetime license becomes invalid if you depart the state....in my mind that's a bad business move and impacts lifetime license sales in the Keystone State....
  5. "I think this aspect of NYS is stupid. Once the legislation is pushed through to allow hunting of an animal in NYS. The DEC should be able to regulate how it is done. While this can be taken lightly, the DEC is supposed to be the experts in wildlife management, not the politicians. Also, if that is the case, then how come everybody is afraid of muzzleloaders being allowed during early season. It seems like it would need legislative approvals also." Agree wholeheartedly....but you know how it is in New York: lawmakers know best....it's all about control in this state (and some others as well).....
  6. DEC has actually pushed for expanded crossbow use, but that is not a regulatory decision....it has to be approved through legislative channels (bill passage, governor's signature).....
  7. Bounties haven't worked.....how's this for a scenario: Hunters bag a couple in NY (or Ohio, or West Virginia) then turn them into Pa. for their $25..... Also, coyotes have shown to be a "compensating species...." In Kansas, I believe back in the 1940s, the feds undertook an eradication program....what they found was the average litter size went from 5 to 12....so the coyotes basically thumbed their noses at that effort.... I don't have an answer, and I recognize that we all want to do "something," and maybe a year-round season might give us the kind of feel-good effort we'd like, but I'm skeptical as to whether we can make an impact....
  8. Working on the story now for our Jan. 8 edition of NY Outdoor News, but this is it in a nutshell regarding regs: Air rifles would be allowed for taking big game only where other types of rifles are allowed. So if you're in the state's rifle zone now, you would be good to go with an air rifle that meets the requirement for big game.....
  9. Not necessarily picking any side, but giving our readers a general idea of the sentiment on the issue.....
  10. Taxes are a huge factor in NY....the state hammers you on even undeveloped scrub land.....
  11. Forgot a seat cushion for my stand, knowing it would be wet from the rain......had a wet ass in 10 minutes, had to stand the rest of the evening.....saw nothing.....forgot binocs as well, but that was no big deal.....
  12. "here in 4J you had to check your harvest in to get the bonus (either-sex) DMP. no way to really fake a harvest." Actually, there IS a way to "fake a harvest".....simply shoot a doe from another unit and tag it accordingly....that's one of the challenges with an earn-a-buck system...in states that had Earn-a-Buck in place they found hunters shooting does outside the EAB zone and bringing them in....even picking up roadkills in some cases if they were intact to the point where they could pass as hunter-shot deer....
  13. Ohio has a short, post-rut, shotgun-only firearms season.....that's primarily what grows their big bucks.....
