Praying for snow for the final weekend!
nygooseduster26 replied to nygooseduster26's topic in Deer Hunting
I just wanna have a good final day because i think it'll be my last day i can hunt this year. It sucks. I'm only 18 so i have school and holding a job as well is really hurting my hunting season. -
Well guys, its been a rough season thus far. I managed to get a six point with a bow on 11/13 and i've only been able to go on 4 sits since gun season opened! I managed to take a buck on thanksgiving day that was 6.5 years old but unfortunately someone had already taken a shot on the buck and hit him high in the shoulder and he acquired gang green and the infection spread through the whole deer and he was no good! DEC issued me a letter saying my buck tag was still valid. He was a buck we definately wanted out of our gene pool on that property but i still wish it didnt happen the way that it did. His dressed weight was 154 lbs. He was a 4 point and on his left side he was 14 1/4" and on the right side he had a 15 1/8" with a split brow tine, his tips literally overlapped over eachother by over an inch. It looked like he had a halo walkin across the field. 187 yards, the .222 put a perfect shot right through both lungs and he went 35 yards and flipped over. I've only had one hunt since then with no luck. I am taking off work saturday so i am hoping the weather stays at it is supposed to with 32 degrees and snow flurries all day. Any of you guys praying for some powder for the final weekend of the regular season?

Should the .410 be legal for deer?
nygooseduster26 replied to 13BVET's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
My neighbor has hunted for deer with a .410 for many years. We watched him take down a 9 point with a 80 yard shot to the lungs. We told him it was illegal to use but you know how stubborn old men can be! -
Pics to come later! Thanks guys. I'll post some pics of the buck my father shot the first day and was not recovered. The landowner found it unfortunately too late. Just so nobody gets fired up, it was a very valid tracking job. 6 hours on the foot by ourselves and another 8 hours with NY deer search tracking dog.

After a long 3 day weekend, sunday morning turned out to be the day i would get my chance! I took a shot at a big 8 point early this season and went just below his vitals and i was aiming to get that buck but sunday was my last day i could hunt so i was willing to shoot any deer as long as it wasnt a fawn. I got in my ladder stand well before light and enjoyed the nice sunrise and awakening of the wildlife around me. My father was hunting about 300 yards behind me in another ladder stand. I hadnt seen anything yet by 6:45. At 6:56 I got a text from my father that said "Small buck coming your way, looks like hes gonna skirt the edge of the woods above you." I instantly stood up and grabbed my bow. Less than a minute later I spotted him coming through the woods behind me right to me. He was trotting pretty quick to me. He stopped trotting 15 yards behind me and Started to slowly walk towards me. He got right below me and sniffed the rail of my ladder and didnt like it and jumped back behind me and just looked around. I drew my bow back and waited for my shot. He was straight away from me so i waited until i got a good shot. He turned and gave me a good quartering away shot at 12 yards and I squeezed the trigger and watched my arrow disappear at the back of his ribcage, at center body. He did the famous "Donkey Kick" and ran up across the field and stood there a few seconds before starting to trot and went into a pile out of sight. I gave it until 10:00 and tracked him to the spot he expired. He was just a 6 point that weighed in at 117.8 lbs dressed. It was a great hunt!

Should the .410 be legal for deer?
nygooseduster26 replied to 13BVET's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I wondered the ssame thing. I use a .222 which is much smaller than a .410 round. It specifies in the regulations book that it can be "Any Centerfire Rifle." As i recall, you couldnt use a .410 before the rifle season came about because it was considered a rifle. Maybe i'm wrong. Great question! -
lets see your STATE LAND harvest buck or doe.
nygooseduster26 replied to arrow nocker's topic in Deer Hunting
I dont have any pics right now but mt dad and i hunted state land 2 years ago for two days and the first afternoon my dad killed a very nice ten point and the next morning I killed a really neat racked 6 point. His was on 10/30 and mine was on 10/31. We never scouted. Both perfect kills with a bow. I hunted a piece of state land in muzzeloader season last year where i saw 21 deer in one sitting. They get all bunched up and stay in tight groups in those thick pines. Hard to beleive all those deer and no shots fired. Just look on google Earth and find the low areas and ravines in the state land you want to hunt and plan from there. I've had my best luck on the higher ridges of the State land. -
Huge Buck Ithaca/Cayuga Heights 16 pt?
nygooseduster26 replied to HectorBuckBuster's topic in Bow Hunting
Wow! That is a beautiful buck! I Don't hunt in Ithaca, I hunt in Watkins Glen but someone sent me this picture saying it was from Odessa. I would give it 180-185" -
I have heard that the chipmunk clucking is similar to that of a bluejay when it detects someting is not right. Like a warning.

Nice buck! and Nice bow! You shoot instinctively? or is the sight just hidden? lol

Martin Bengal 64 lbs. Deer#1-Shockwave expandable, no passthrough all blades snapped on first shoulder at 21 yards. Deer#2-G5 Montec fixed blade, blistered through both shoulders for a passthrough at 26 yards. Deer#3-G5 Montec fixed blade, passthrough through the opposite shoulder at 26 yards. Deer#4-G5 Montec fixed blade, passthrough through both shoulders at 32 yards. I've shot 7 deer with my bow, only one with expandable broadheads. After I saw what the Montecs do, I'll never switch again! Best broadhead i've ever shot! By Far! Flies just like my field points, no sight adjustments needed.

Looks like the second pic has a little injury. Wonder if it was fighting or broadhead. Could be anything i guess.

Sorta looks like a dusting pot for turkeys to me... -
Road Hunters are so annoying. > I probably would have let him shoot it and when he came to get it walk up to him and wait for the dec to arrive and handle the situation. By law the illegal hunter has to stay there on the property with you. If not he is leaving the scene of a crime. My teacher is also a dec officer so i brought the situation to him and he said you should have let him shoot it and then taken his personal body/vehicle description and license plate numbers and reported him to the dec immediately. While this may not have been an option for you, what you did was perfectly acceptable, and congrats on a great bird!!!!! Great way to kick off the season!

Opening morning had 2 hens cross the big open field in front of me. Probably 15 minutes later i made a call and a hen came out into the field by herself (from the same area as the other hens) and a couple minutes later i had a tom come out to the field and gobble and strut. The lone hen called at him but apparently he liked my calling a little better....Or just got pissed at my jake mobile rubbing up on my swingin hen well, ten minutes and 200 yrds later he was at 26 yards, made one last gobble and i dropped the hammer on him. He dropped like a sack of potatoes after the strike from my 20 gauge 3" winchester double magnum #4 load He was 19.4 lbs 8 inch beard and 7/8" spurs -Brad,17,NY

Youth hunt weekend went unsuccessful though had some close encounters. Steuben County really needs to manage some coyotes! They are EVERYWHERE! The property where i hunt where we usually see 10-15 gobblers each morning, is now overrun by coyotes and we only saw 5 gobblers over the 2-Day youth hunt. and not a SINGLE jake! :-[ >
