  1. The place I hang deer is full of apples this year. Can I have Raw Venison and Apples in the same small room? I know apples put off some kind of gas that kills live trees and spoils root vegetables. Any one know if this will spoil the meat?
  2. No requirement for "professional" but might need to be de boned ect for CWD Depends where the meat is coming from I have heard that it can be trucked somewhere in PA to a freezer where house and then picked up but I was told that is "expensive" and 5 hours away.
  3. Going for Moose. Airlines are expensive. $100 for 50lb box and since they are smaller planes they limit the bags. From what I read on the website no dry ice at all or it is a pay hazard fee which was really high. I like the idea of mail. Call UPS freight and they said they would not ship meat but some one else said they have used them so who knows. There is the international issue as well. I figure I can get 100 lbs on the plane with me some how and then.....
  4. Going on a hunt in New Foundland and flying. Does anyone know what is the most cost effective way to get meat back from New Foundland Canada? When your not driving. thanks
  5. What are the options for shipping or flying back with meat from New Foundland? What is most reasonably priced? Anyone else going up this October?
  6. Are you going to rejoin?- I remember seeing something about a new Pres in the Outdoor news. I think we are out of areas where the 3 point would make any sense. When the DEC was thinking about YBP for the state they had 4 points for most of the state and other regional staff from the west think a spread would be better.
  7. what is it? The antler restriction? None has been proposed. I have never stated what the antler restrictions would be in other parts of the state nor has any one or group proposed a specific restriction for new areas of NY. That is for the DEC biologist to set. When did you quit NYB?
  8. Here is the QDMA rule on AR support- it is three points all of which are in met in NY. The guy above left this out. Here is the link to national QDMA http://www.qdma.com/articles/qdmas-position-on-mandatory-antler-restrictions AND these are the three points for support. First, is the restriction biologically sound? This means the proposed restriction will protect the majority of yearling bucks while allowing the majority of bucks 2½ years old and older to be eligible for harvest. Second, is it supported by the majority of affected hunters? Agencies considering an antler restriction should conduct surveys to determine support levels before enacting the restriction. Finally, will it be objectively monitored to determine success or failure? Without monitoring, there is no way to know if the restriction should be altered to improve success or possibly removed altogether if it doesn’t work or is no longer needed. If hunters in NY were voluntarily passing yearling bucks we would not be have this conversation about yearling buck conservation!
  9. QDMA Absolute supports Mandatory Antler Restrictions nationwide provided they are supported and properly set to protect yearling bucks. In NY the majority of NY hunters support yearling buck protection with antler restrictions. IN NY yearling buck protection is put forth by local sportsmen not QDMA Do Antler Restrictions Work? « Hudson Valley QDMA www.hvqdma.com/do-antler-restrictions-really-work/ Apr 16, 2010 – On a nationwide scale, QDMA has and will support antler restriction programs if three specific and important criteria are met by the proponents ...
  10. Don't forget to say the units you want yearling buck protection with antler restrictions in. Also the antler restriction standard would protect 80 to 100% of the yearling bucks from harvest by adult hunters.
  11. I am unclear as to what one can own in the AR style in NY today and what type of magazines you can have. Anyone know the law? If you can not find one here to buy is it ok to get one in another state and bring home? I am getting the feeling they are sold out everywhere but..... Also how many own them in the state- the more owner the less likely they are getting taken away.
  12. Please let me know who wants Yearling Buck Protection with antler restrictions in their area and let me know what county and WMUs (Wildlife Management Units) you hunt in. Feel free to Private Message me this information. THIS IS NOT THE PLACE TO ARGUE THE ISSUE FOR THE TENTH TIME. There are lots of threads for that already! Please only respond if you want this hunting improvement in your area!
  13. It is true that does do not need to be harvested every where in NY and in areas with few deer doe harvest needs to be limited. ARs are about buck age structure which is improved dramatically by not shooting yearling bucks. And of course this should be instituted in the entire southern zone where it is supported by the majority of Deer hunters. Common sense if you do not shoot little ones they get older. Very Good Article on ARs http://www.eveningtribune.com/topstories/x1249727649/Are-antler-restrictions-the-wave-of-the-future-in-NYS?zc_p=3
  14. john take some pics at the butcher
  15. john you should see the 3H PICs that folks have. I have never seen such nice bucks. Are you hunting monday?
  16. Just look at page 3 of the report it shows both graphics and numbers that back up what I am said with regard to the 3.5 year old harvest being way up- like 3 times higher with ARs I do often get the idea that the ANTI AR folks are really more interested in the argument than in deer hunting or the facts. It’s all about the fight. There must be some other issue that needs fighting and arguing. Nice dog - Do you wear a sports coat and tie when hunting over the dog?
  17. Doewacker - we need to change your name to yearling buck killer because if you like to wack does then you should not need to kill yearlings so should be ok with ARs. What kind of dog is that in your PIC?
  18. That is just wrong- show me the data! 3.5 year old harvest is up 258% in the AR area and it almost 3 times the state level. For the state to get to the same low yearling buck harvest as in the AR area would take 56 years at the current rate of decline. That can happen in one year with the correct AR! BTW the DEC defines yearlings as adults which is not biologically correct. Also they are counting fawns; see one buck fawn and one doe fawn see balanced bucks and does. Very few adult bucks to count after season. What we are looking for is multiple age classes of bucks as nature intended. There are a lot of biologists that say there are biological benefits to protecting yearling bucks. Dick Henry DEC retired who ran the entire state deer herd as state deer biologist say it’s biologically better. We know that adult bucks do more that there share of the breeding when they exist in the population and it is better for the mature bucks to do the breeding.
  19. THe other group is the majority of hunters in NY, in all parts of NY. Cool that you understand that they work.
  20. Dang, I thought this thread was dead! “I think very few would dispute that AR's would grow a large racked deer population. I think the point of contention is at what cost? “ What cost? I let a couple/ few yearling bucks walk by watch year, just like I let fawns and does go by when I do not have a tag, without killing them. Big deal. Happy to see them and see them spar and call. Got 16 years worth of spikes in a small box pre AR and 6 years of racked bucks since ARs got started. It is really a no brainier but I understand how folks can be apprehensive and concerned. I got two great ways to do the euro mounts which is what I have been doing since we got ARs. The people that are experiencing the great hunting in the yearling buck protection areas are busy outside scouting for bucks! Not posting how great their hunting is to some folks that love to argue against ARs. Folks that do not even have them! LOL The 3N area is a private land management plan, not DEC AR regulation. That’s why they have a no buck rule for the first few days. BTW a guy who lives near there has a room full of BIG bucks from that management program. Steve are you in the AR area now?
  21. On the original question: it is an illegal deer so it can be up to $2500 and the other info that was posted in the beginning. In reality it is about a $500 fine, never heard of one as low as 250. Most of the tickets are written as an add on to other crimes like baiting, jacking, shooting from motor vehicle. Was just at the bow shop and everyone is showing off the PICs they have of the bucks in the AR area. Big and one guy had five nice bucks all on film at the time. It is no longer a question of whether Yearling Buck Protection with Antler Restrictions works. YBP/AR are proven to work in NY and 22 other states. Come on over and take a drive around. BTW I heard a ECO giving a presentation say that ARs make deer hunting safer because hunters need to make sure of what they are shooting at and that verification helps to make sure that it is a deer and a safe shot before pulling the trigger.
  22. send a certified letter- to land owner and who ever is marking the trees tell them that you have marked the line- better your surveyor marked the line and they need to insure that all mark trees are on their side and monitor any and all people working on the line to insure that. If they have logs marked tell them you have unmarked them and they belong to you.
  23. Keep in mind any semi rifle for hunting that is larger that a .22 rim fire must have the capacity limited to 6 rounds- so get a small clip before going hunting with one.
