Looking into purchasing some land in Ontario County, NY. Would like to know ballpark on price per acre for this area or other around Western, NY. From what I am hearing $2,000 an acre is the "rule of thumb" for this area. Any info or input from current land owners or anyone with knowledge on buying/selling land? Here is a breakdown of the property in Ontario County. 22 acres of Agricultural Land 42.3 of Farm/Woodland (about 1/2 is wooded, 1/2 is wetland that you can't do anything with, farm, build, etc) 64.3 total acres. There are 14 tillable acres right now total and 12 are being rented and farmed which we would continue to do if we purchased the property.

And I almost compare some of the thoughts on this thread to those guys I used to play football with and wouldn't wear layers when it was freezing cold just pads and jersey but it was like their mentality was if you have to bundle up in Under Armour etc. then your a sissy? Actually I want to layer up to be warm and more comfortable so I can be a better player and concentrate on my own job on the field and not be distracted because I am freezing. No less of a tough guy, just like hunting from a elevated blind makes you less of a hunter. Now if your shooting from your bedroom window/or camper thats one thing. But if you have the resources to put one of these together and make it work to your benefit to give you a better opportunity to harvest a deer then thats what its all about. Isn't that what we all do every year when the new hunting gear comes out that we drool over...we want to get our hands on whatever is going to make the hunt easier, more enjoyable, help us to be successful in the field. Thats why most of us aren't hunting with a tree branch, vine string and flint rock broadhead.

I think these sorts of stands are great. Weather is not great climb in one, wanna bring the mrs/kiddies out perfect place to be. As for all the bells and whistles...why not have a cooker and heater? If I am going to spend the effort, money and time into getting one of these put together might as well trick it out to fit my personal preference. I don't think it makes them any less of a hunter if anything a smarter hunter. We all have been uncomfortable in the stand whether it be from the cold, rain, butt falling asleep from sitting so long...so If I was able to keep warm, have a hot meal, relax in a comfy chair, and harvest a deer all at the same time seems like a no brainer. All this talk and I am thinking of some great interior design ideas...mine would probably look like my college dorm room...couple of Bills posters and pennants (even though they've killed me the last few week...actually the last 26 years but thats another story), a couple girly pictures, print outs of big bucks to keep me motivated on the slow days and a cooler within arms reach full of bee..I mean soda and snacks....ahh how great would that be!

I'm putting myself in the shoes of Nash. If this was in my hometown and everyone knows there are big deer in the area then I would want to seek out permission to hunt on legal grounds anywhere possible. Always nice to have places close to home to hunt. From what I've gathered thus far in this particular area legal hunting areas are hard to come by. Now I have to assume this particular buck everyone in town knew about tame or not the hunter can't control that. (its not like he was feeding it in his backyard to keep it around at least that we know of) If I was able to get permission to hunt a piece of land and this particular buck walked by...and I knew it was tame it would still be hard for me not to shoot it. You live in a suburban wooded area what else do you expect, you're in the deer's neighborhood too. Now am I going to have the same internal satisfaction by shooting this buck over one of lesser size out on state land that took every inch of effort (scouting, trail cams, scent control etc.) to harvest I would say no. If I was to harvest this buck I am not going to try and sugarcoat the story either it "Hey I know it was a tame buck...I happen to be out hunting he came out and I shot him end of story. We all know when you shoot a buck like this one your going to get negative and positive responses...comes with the territory. But if you put all your pieces into place and do it the right way you should not be ashamed but pure common sense and deer knowledge will tell you that this buck doesn't operate like "wild" bucks. Maybe this buck is a little easier a kill then other bucks. I agree with the folks who say this bucks harvest has a lot of gray area but if your in this situation....you went out and found a spot in this area to hunt and hunt legally and this bruiser happened to walk would you put an arrow in him? I could make a point for both yes or no answers and be happy with either...

I was lucky to fill one of my doe tags the Sunday of opening weekend in the SZ with my bow so I can't really complain. I have seen deer every sit and probably 75% of the time have had a chance for a shot. Each year I have 4 tags..Bow, Gun and 2 doe tags. Ideally I would like to take a buck and doe for each season. So after my early season Doe I have been able to Big Buck Hunt for the remainder just haven't had a big buck come in. For our core group of 4 Bow Hunters it has been a down year...have seen lots of small bucks but very few shooters (120 inch minimum.) Last year we killed 6 bucks that scored 115-130 inches (3 during bow, 3 during gun/muzzleloader). Our property if just under 300 acres, I think our lack of big bucks is due to last years harvest...plus I think judging from other threads that the big boys haven't made their way out of hiding quite yet. But our trails cams this year have far less pics of big bucks compared to last year so from the standpoint of seeing/harvesting good bucks this year has been below our average.

Been hunting 4 yrs with Gun 3 with Bow. Have killed 3 deer with my Shotgun and 2 deer with my bow. First Deer I ever drew on with my bow I did not find...one of those rookie encounters...4 pt walked in I rushed the shot had no clue where I hit the deer. Blood on arrow but could not find blood on ground looked for 2 hours circling the spot of impact. Was discouraged till the next weekend when the same deer ran by chasing a doe. So although I did not have meat in the freezer I was happy that my mistake worked out for the best.

Same here...have seen several small bucks chasing but the big boys have still been hiding. -
Sunday AM Doe...12 yds...took to my buddies and butchered her up now my freezer is looking good. Great start to the 2011 season.
-
She came in right at first light around 7:30AM Sunday morning. About a 12yd broadside shot. Double Lung easy blood trail. She was piled up less then 100 yds away
-
some of these are borderline shooters...trying to keep a minimum of 115 inches for a bow buck on property

Thats actually what I was thinking, doing a closet to the bullseye or high card...I am going to bring that up when we meet in the next couple weeks.

I agree with all the points made. Everything has remained friendly between us on the situation of who's gonna hunt that spot but there is that underlying tension of if I wanted to push the issue it could become just that, an issue. Its really been more of busting each others chops..."I'll shoot it and let you gut it" A few of the comments he made "I guess you forgot who let you hang that stand" and "I've scouted this buck harder then any other" kind of bugged me but it is what it is. It would be something that when the season comes around I bag him in another stand or even better one of the other guys knocks him out. Either way I hope next time I share a photo he's on the ground!

Now here's the real debate...last year 3 buddies and I started our hunt club. We all have stands covering 300 acres of property which belongs to of my buddies in laws. We put one of my stands up in this spot (right behind) the deer in the pic) a few months ago. We all share stands and you can hunt any of them typically we prepare the night before and plan who will be where. Now this was a spot I wanted to put a stand in because of the movement from last year, I had 2 extra stands that we put up that day which pretty much I could of put anywhere. My buddy who "owns" the land put his trail cam up in this spot saw the deer first, he is pushing the I'm the "President" of the Club card pretty hard and I guess you could say I am the green horn being that last year was my first full year hunting this property, but the "club" we only started last year. We all put the same amount of money in and so on. The debate is now that he has this buck on camera he wants to hunt this stand opening day...says he's scouted this deer harder then any in his life...which to me is an exaggeration, you a couple trail cam pics, really isnt hard scouting to check a memory card. My thought is, I wanted to put the stand there, its my stand should be my choice, his thought is you wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for me so its my call...who's right?

Mr. Perfect might take the cake

All solid ideas...with the hand held no one tried to just clip it on the bow rather then hold it in your hand? I think I will just hand wash my current release, scrub her good and keep in bag with waffers. Thanks for the input.

Was looking into changing my release for the upcoming year. Couple of reasons... A.) My current release is pretty much the same as the picture attached...has worked great came with the my old bow when I bought it used. My thinking is from all the summer shooting and sweat on my palms it has a good smell to it, now I can't really notice a stink but I am sure an old buck can. B.) I really am liking the hand held release, can clip to my bow have both hands free while in the tree stand. Good reviews, no cloth material to harbor human odor. I was looking at a Tru Fire Edge 4 (Second Attachment) Now I can save them money and have the peace of mind by washing my current Release..I can't remove the actual release so I would have to put the entire thing in the wash, any chance of damage to the release (rust I guess is my biggest concern)?...I figured I would throw it in with my other hunting clothes to minimize the banging on the washer/dryer walls Does anyone shoot a hand held? What model, pros/cons, etc? Thanks.

Do you look for your sheds in Mendon Ponds Park or do you have land around that area. I found this one back at the end of December in the park while walking with the Mrs.

Anyone use the Remington Accutip Bonded Sabot Slug (http://www.remington.com/products/ammunition/shotshells/slugs/premier-accutip-bonded-sabot-slug.aspx) If so how'd they work? Xmas gift was a new 870 (http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/shotguns/model-870/model-870-sps-shurshot-synthetic-super-slug.aspx) Obviously Remington recommended their slugs for the gun, but if anyone shoots a similar model gun what type of slug have you been most happy with? Prob end up getting the Accutip and Hornady SST just to compare both seems like most have gave the thumbs up to the SST's

Pygmy...took a hike yesterday and may have saw your first buck pic....looks like a doozy! Man I am bored at work....
-
hahahaha I would love to see the type of chick who would allow such a thing to go down...I think I saw a few over here in Rochester just off Hudson Ave.
-
Yes, I doubt he would be as quick to complain...she looks much better then the dead buck in the tree out front.

You are absolutely right We Don't Have To but the point is when your dealing with people who are against hunting for any reason why give them ammo to argue against you with. I am not going to a gun fight and handing my bullets to my enemy. If you know your neighbor has a issue with you hanging your deer where its in plain view why add fuel to the fire, shut the garage door. If you want to be that guy on the block then don't and deal with the outcome. In the end you are going to do what you want...my opinion is why stoop to their level if you don't have to.

Example: Mrs. wants me to go to the store with her on Sunday, but the game is on...I can A.) complain and start an argument that the game is on and I don't feel like going because the couch is so much better or B.) Go with her avoid the fight and take the high road...same thing with the hunting examples, although we have the right to do whatever we want we need to chose whats best overall and avoid those meaningless arguments. BTW I would go with C.) Strike a deal that is if I go to the Store when we get home its back to the couch with a backrub...its a family site, use your imagination and replace couch and backrub
