I don't watch the Outhouse Channel, because most of these "Professionals" couldn't find there way out of my 5 acre lot without a map, gps and string tied from one end to the other. AND another reason I would never support SCI.They certainly don't practice fair chase. They are notorious for shooting (I refuse to call it "hunting) inside petting zoos. And then have the gall to publish these zoo pets in their record books,

Dan.. I hunt Fahnestock Park......... S-L-O-W !!!! So Far. It's early yet.

Should have been by the opener. I would think Great Swamp is the best bet.
-
I applied for 4Y and 3N. Didn't get 3N

According to the DEC Report Putnam got 714 birds. - stocked.

What Doc said.

Hi,Dins... I'm actuially located in Staatsburg, And I do the November Bow Only Deer Hunt in Clermont for severa years now too. I usually go down to Fahnestock for the Late Winter Archery Season. Marfhunts.. you are right about that, most who go to Fahnestock don't venture very far, and FSP takes some exploring and learning the area to be successful.
-
I am hunting a limited area. Bow Only for Deer for many years. And that upsets you. I too have been hunting for 40+ years. And I have 30+ years as a volunteer in several State and National organizations involved in the outdoor sports. So I'm not just a Internet Quarterback. I do my part. I asked a simple question in disbelief. I wasn't looking for a debate. Fahnestock sits right smack on the Appalachian Trail it is all high Mountain Area, there aren't a lot of deer here, never have been. It just provides a big woods - like experience that is close to home. It is altogether about the experience of the hunt here, where actually taking a deer here, any deer is far from a sure bet.
-
Newbie.. No. And I won't even get ino the debate with you, if you're looking for an argument. It is just nice having an Archery Only Area to hunt over the years, with enough room to roam without having to worry about Blaze Orange behind every tree. And on Public Land that's extremely difficult.
-
I hope it's a miss-print according to the latest New York Outdoor News, Fahnestock is open for Firearms in the Firearm Season this year. As a hardcore bowhunter I hope not. That sucks! Not like Fahnestock is over run with deer to begin with!
-
Thanks, Osbourne... Partridge Run I know very well.
-
Me too! And the really nice part is even the 80 degree weather is gone for another six months!

Too early for most scents or rattling & grunting for that matter. Vamilla Extract works. If there are Beavers in your area take a q tip of beaver castor oil paste and stick it on a stump, log or on the ground, Deer are attracted to it. Beaver castor is the main ingredient in many Buck Lures.

Happened to me just east of the Champlain Locks Area on the NY-VT border a few years ago. I thought they were two horses trotting off at the far end of a meadow wetland. Amazing! Especially their height! They are beautiful. Can't wait to see a Lottery Season for them in NY

I think this is a good thing. I am for the Crossbow in all Big Game Seasons and the October Youth Hunt. http://blog.syracuse.com/outdoors/2012/09/crossbow_bill_delayed_governor.html

Yup, what SteveB said. Animals smell like we hear. They have the ability to take in all scents at once and break them down into what they are and where they came from. At best we can do is stay as "scent free" as possible, clothes washed in baking soda and stored in a scent free manner. And Hunt The Wind. in my lowly opinion, most of the stuff on the market is all snake oil anyway.
-
HAHAHA...! I knew that was coming. But I know your Area.. and there's a good chance that that 1.5 years old is a 6 or an 8 pointer!
-
To me, shooting fawns or yearlings are a wasted tag. If you have multiple Tags and Butcher yourself I suppose it's less work. But if you have your animal butchered, that becomes a very expensive fawn. I'd rather let them grow up anyway. Besides.. don't want to take a chance at shooting next years Buck!
-
I see. If you wrote to the DEC about it;, the reason they got adopted anyway, is because the majority of Public Comment feedback was favoraable for it, and not against it. So again, the system worked. And my mistake, I believe in working these things through the DEC and leaving the Politicians out of it completely. The DEC are the professionals with the science and knowledge to manage and regulate the Deer Herd, not the Politicians. And we should not undermine the DEC's regulatory authority by getting Politicians involved.

Mammal urine is mammal urine, I have pee'd into scrapes myself and have watched deer come to them and freshen them many times afterwards as well. Doe urine just means a deer passed by. I have also seen deer spoke from the store bought stuff. I prefer to be as scent free as possible and watch the wind. I am always cautious about scents, because a deer is going to do what if they smell something, go on the alert and start looking. I don't want them on the alert or looking for anything, I prefer them relaxed and just coming by.

AR Restrictions regarding the protecting of 1.5 Year Old Bucks actually is very beneficial. 1) It provides greater opportunity to see that the older bucks are the ones doing the majority of the breeding, 2) helps to consolidate the breeding into single breeding rut period, versus years where we had a split rut. 3) When 1 & 2 are possible, this means the majority of Does will give birth approximately at the same time, rather than an early and late fawn birthing periods. This in turn provides better consolidation of fawn births in a single period and thus reduces the number of overall fawn mortality by Coyotes. Coyotes kill approx. 2 fawns per square mile (Black Bears kill 1 fawn per square mile), when you have two fawn birthing periods the greater the fawn mortality will go up. For those that have Antler Restrictions, everyone griped when they were first inacted. But after the second year and everyone was shoting 8 pointers instead of button bucks and spikes, everyone was all smiles. Patience.
-
I have to agree with Doc whole-heartedly on this one. The AR "Restrictions" Proposed Regulations were also contained within the 5 Year Management Plan, and there was a very long period of time for public comment that anyone and everyone had ample opportunity to respond. Also nothing stopping anyone from writing their own state representatives, senator or even the governor's office for that matter.

Anyone have any pointers on Schoharie County Public Land Grouse & Woodcock?

I bought a Cabelas Fillet Knife 25 years ago. Came with a sharpening rod, still super sharp and great condition.

Bill to raise hunting age to 18
SteveMcD replied to Suilleabhain's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Yeah she had introduced that bill six months after she voted FOR the Age Reduction Bill. What a Dizzy Broad. It's a one house bill and will never go anywhere.
