Just my 2 cents. The 25.06 is an excellent very flat shooting choice. However, it was initially developed as a "wildcat" cartridge. Whereby, if you can reload your own, or find someone to reload for you, you will get a better performing cartridge.

I live in Region 3 that gets heavily hunted by downstate residents from the City and Long Island. For that reason I like Antler Restrictions. But to choose between the two, I'd prefer the One Buck Rule.

I'm still hunting. I head down to Fahnestock for the Late Archery Season. Tough place to hunt, but deer are there.

I just spit out my coffee all over my desk!!!! hahahahaha

Question regarding using scents during late season. . .
SteveMcD replied to Deerthug's topic in General Chit Chat
DH.. I think deer scents are hit n' miss. It depends on the deer. The older smarter deer will likely circle around whatever there smelling from a distance or ignore it completely. On the other hand, the time right now is right for any does coming into heat that missed the first cycle. Bucks right now know this and will be cruising, looking for any unbred does, particularly the yealring does. At most all I do is put some doe urine (plain old doe urine) on a cotton ball and wipe it on the bottom of my boots, as a cover / scent trail. Sometimes it works very well, sometimes no re-action at all,. Then again, doe urine is nothing more than a security, "put them at ease scent" but I have watched deer follow my trail and they are far from at ease - they're looking! The older smarter bigger bucks will likely ignore anything you put out right now. Every trick in the book has been thrown at them since October 15th! Hunt intersecting trails particularly around a food source right now, and play the wind, is the best bet. -
Doc.. here in 3F back in the early 90's we had an over abundance of deer, that literally destroyed stands of hemlock trees in the state park by my home (state park is no hunting, surrounding area gets hunted), anyway when we had back to back bad winters in the 95 and 96, it devastated the deer herd. Then it bounced back in the next four years, where again I noticed large herds of deer and quite a bit of starvation and winter kill off around 2003. I guess though it depends on where you are in the state, I hunt 3F, 3N, 4Y and 4J, and the deer numbers just are not there any more, 20 years ao I would go out hunting and see 20 or more deer a day. Now I see about that many in an entire season. Way too many DMP's and a Rifle season that is too long. We should have a one buck rule regardless of number of licences and a stricter DMP allocation. I think the DEC caters to the Farm Bureau and the Insurance companies, we just get lip service.

Between the Mayor and the Fire Department they must be morons. I don't know if I could sleep at night, LETTING something like that happen.

As a Volunteer Instructor I get it for free. But, it is worth every penny. Great Magazine about New York's outdoors.

Unless it's pouring rain. I am in the woods, usually on stand from dawn to dusk. I hunt all day.

Yup.. in others words from a nerve/skeletal viewpoint. He did not hit the spine at all, only the muscle above or below it. Stunned him that's all. Happened to a friend a couple of years ago, he shot a doe walked up to it, filled out his tag, and realized he left his knife in the car. He walks back to the car gets his knife and when closely approaching the doe again, it gets up and runs away!

Very Nice! That story made my mouth water! Will get out for grouse and snowshoe after deer season. Always look forward to it

small game hunting question...
SteveMcD replied to lastedtiger's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Guys they stock a lot of pheasant in Stewart State Forest, plenty of rabbit and squirrel too. Best bet.. try and go during the week, it is a sign in/ sign out process there, the ealrier you get there the better off. That would e my recommendation out of all of them. Good luck. P.S> if you deer hunt there is parking on some of the boundary public roads, so you do not have to sign in, best to get a map of the area and scout it out. -
Ahh yes, Rennessalaer County I'm not to far in Northern Dutchess. all the yuppies and tree huggers moving up from down state. Animal Rights Nut Jobs. Hope they get what they deserve - Jail time and enforced financial retribution.

Well, I don't hang up my bow. But I have to admit, between deer numbers and weather it has been a very poor year. There are almost no acorns this year, so the deer are hanging out close to the fields and developments. I will keep on truckin' with my bow. After all - if I get ONE! It's a good year - right?!!
-
ABSOLUTELY!!! And glad that our state allows us to do so. There are many state parks and properties throughout the state that are Bow Only right through the Late Season. Love it!

I already got into it with another person on another site concerning bow hunting. Me being a die hard bowhunter that hunts all the seasons with my longbow. Truth is... "stuff happens" arrow hits a twig, deer flinched at sound, whatever. It happens to the best of us, anyone who can say it hasn't, has not hunted long enough. With age and experience I have learned (and I teach it in hunter ed), "I have taken few shots that I have regretted, but I have never regretted not taking a shot". Truth is.. and many state and federal agencies have documented this. Bow hunters have the least amount of crippling losses compared to all other groups of hunters. I can point out some non bow hunting examples as well. but, I would rather leave it alone as - what happens in the woods, stays in the woods. BTW.. if someone wants to talk about their miss, bad shot, lost track whatever... I hope they do. There are plenty of knowledgeable and experienced people here that can help them And that's a good thing right? .

I like what Doc said. Watching The Exorcist the night before will make you think twice about the dark! LOL! I have hunted bear country a lot, and never had a problem going in, in the dark. First snap of the twig and they're long gone away from you.

I'd love some fresh pork. but it is known be careful what you wish for. Feral pigs are devastating to the environment, which is then detrimental to the deer and turkey

I use the Autumn Blend or Acorn Cover Scents. I don't use attractants at all. Not sure how well the cover scents actually work, but if they at least mask some portion of human odor that's a good thing. The main thing is to pay attention to the wind. Animals smell like we hear, they pick up dozens of smells at one time and then have the ability to sort them out.

In the early part of the season just some water. If I drink too much.. well nature calls and I don't like it interrupting my hunt that way. In cold weather I prefer Chicken Noodle soup. A little extra starch to burn into body sugar helps stay warm.. just my theory. If nothing else.. If I ain't hungry and cold I'm bound to stay in the woods longer.

I've been hunting Columbia and Dutchess Counties primarily and yes.... I pulled 5 deer tick off of me in the past two weeks. Freakin mosquitoes have been alive, well and EATING also! I hate this warm weather this time of year.

I love to cook Fish & WiId Game at home.. that's about it. I leave the rest of the cooking to my better half.
