nice grouping for first few. i shoot all the time, i love to shoot in general. whoever said put it away till october 1st i hope your joking. theres a big different between people who love to shoot and just your average lazy hunters who shoot the day before the season opens. i love 3d and just shooting in the yard i shoot anywhere from 10-80 yards just for fun. im sure someone will turn that statement around thinking id shoot at deer at 80 yards lol, not a chance. 40 max with complete confidence but even that would have to be a shooter with a slow season
-
well that didn't work out to well lol.
-
few other blurry shots

been checking my trail camera every few weeks and checked it this weekend with a big surprise of about 3 or 4 different bucks and one whos a dandy. for my area he's a monster and to be honest any would be shooters come opening day, cuz if i dont someone else will. pretty sure i know where my stand will be sitting this year tho sorry was having issues uploading them so here are the rest also.
-
quiet morning today, the only thing i called in was a 70 year old guy lol. we were callin each other for a few minutes.
-
ill be back out tomorrow morning with the bow this time to try and fill tag number 2
-
haha i dont feel bad at all, he does it to me all too often lol. if you hadn't text me at 9 saying get ready hes gonna walk by your camera i may have been sleeping when they walked in the field lol, im sure that huge gobble he let out 10 feet in front of my blind would have woken me up tho haha. i'm sure ill be out of time before deer season, one more year and ill have another week, then there will be noone in service during deer season lol.
-
i think mine was more wet from the four wheeler ride down the hill gettin sprayed by mud lol, by time i got to the bottom of the mountain we call our hunting grounds i could barely feel my arm from carrying him
-
thanks he was a monster n i couldnt b happier with it, almost thought the morning was going to be a bust, i think i even dozed off for 20 minutes in my blind after it being so quiet and being out since 5:30. heard a gobble way off so called a little, 10 minutes later heard another gobble lil closer n about 20 minutes later they walked into the field right in front of me. when the boss let out a huge gobble right in front of me i was grinnin from ear to ear then i dropped him lol
-
i took a big tom at 9:25 this am, called 3 in from quite a distance away took about an hour and they surprised me when they walked into the field but only the biggest was headin for the decoys so figured he was boss, after a big gobble i took him down 1in spurs, 10 in beard, 24.3lbs. im definitely glad i did take the day off even tho the first few hours were pretty quiet.

i stuck it out in the rain early am and didnt have much activity so i moved my blind about 8:20 a few hundred yards over to a different field and an hour later i called in 3 big toms, they actually surprised me cuz i only got a few goggles every once n a while and they sounded pretty far off. i took the biggest of the 3 but i could tell he was the boss the other 2 were in front of him but wouldnt come close to the 2 hen decoys i had out but the boss was headin right for um. within 10 feet of um he let out a huge gobble and moments later i took him down at 22-23 yards i figure with my 20 gauge 870, he dropped in his tracks head first and wasnt going nowhere. all the effort and research and reading and scouting has paid off, this is my first full year hunting and first spring turkey season. i come from a family full of hunters but for some reason never got into it im 30 now and tried turkey huntin in the fall and took a hen 3 tries/weeks into season i have to say im hooked for life now but im all for spring turkey im not much for the cold thats prolly why i never cared to deer hunt. 1 inch spurs, 10 inch beard, 24.3 pounds

wild turkey is the best meat ive ever had if you cook it right. my fiance doesnt care for any game and she absolutely devoured it. cant wait to cook the next one. i did a lot of scouting this past weekend and found some good birds. ill be out first thing tomorrow morning and every morning every weekend throughout the month. best of luck to all.

winchesters shot like crap out of my 870 also, they were high and random like you said. the best ive found for it have been the federals so thats what im gonna run with. someday i wanna get a ported choke thatll shoot hevi shots cuz the pattern are 1000 times better with those, just crazy expensive but its more like shooting a rifle almost lol, easily take heads off at great distances keepin the rest of the meat very clean.
-
sounds like you enjoy wasting money thats all. none of that is needed to kill turkey at under 40 yards. one choke one round thats all. i had remington nitros leftover from last fall, tried those in my 20 dollar primos tight wad choke, didnt like um, bought some winchesters to sight my red dot in 10 bucks at walmart, i also heard remingtons shoot federals real well so i said ahh what the heck another 10 bucks is all, used 5 to try out patterns much better than anything else ive tried so im set. $40 red dot, $40 scope mount, $20 choke, $30 in rounds in past year, $130 total none of that porting stuff is at all neccesary. just as others mentioned the same 20 gauge shotgun 20 years ago that killed turkeys will kill them today, some just like to go overboard i guess

thatd take all the fun out of building your own gun to your personal liking and doing the testing. shouldnt cost anymore than 150 on top of the price of a bare bones 870 or similar to build a perfect turkey killer. i got less than 150 into my 870 express including red dot and everything
-
25 looks real good, id say its more than likely the shells, try a few different ones, i tried nitros last year with just a full choke and it was barely good for 20 yards, ill be trying out the remington premium shells i got tomorrow afternoon, they should be better than the windchesters from what a lot of people are saying so im expecting to be happy with my setup and a few tests. i just put a neoprene sleeve on my new pistol grip stock and put some padding under it to make a comb rise, perfectly lined up with the red dot now. really hopin to need a use for it on tuesday haha

Anyone counting down the days till May 1st ?
stubbz replied to HopkintonHunter's topic in Turkey Hunting
cant wait for the next few days to go by and get out in the woods, got everything ready to go. gonna do a bit of scouting this weekend and hopefully locate the roost trees. ive been doin a lot of scouting around home but have not had a chance to get up to the farm to look around. hopefully weather permits and i can get up there a few times before tuesday and figure out where i wanna be setting up -
guessi should feel pretty lucky to have gotten my first turkey in my first hunting year and it was in the fall.
-
i dont forsee anyone getting shot using one of these, not that i would but its not deer hunting where ppl just shoot at brush cuz something moving. you gotta put your eyes on a turkey very well and know exactly where your shooting to shoot one. i know there is a lot of dumbasses in this world but i just dont see it happening. a real decoy is different it at least looks real, these do not look real whatsoever
-
oh no worries there ill be on private property anywhere that i hunt. ive never hunted pubplic land but wouldnt mind trying some sometime
-
why do you say that, the dominent toms will come in to challenge an unfamiliar tom trying to breed his hens? i have multiple decoys ill be using but a gobbler call isn't a bad thing to have along with the rest of my calls. obviously only for specific ocassions or instances not neccesarily for when i have the decoys out.
-
ill have to try that i keep a rubberband around the end of mine already also.
-
thanks, ive used enough box calls and watched enough hunting shows and even some of the competitions to know what sounds i need i just havent been able to get um yet. when i first got um i was actually biting the outsides with my teeth and that was the only way i could make a fairly decent sound but i know im not doing it right. gonna have to trim mine down and just start practicing like crazy for the next couple of weeks. i plan to bow hunt for them so having a box call in my hand is not gonna be an easy feet so hopefully i can get them working for me a bit better. gonna have to pickup a gobbler call tho to go with my tom decoy also
-
Thanks it was kinda neat tho it was totally unexpected n not that great of a shot. i wouldnt mind a robin hood if the first arrow was dead center bullseye lol. Got a bit closer and put an arrow threw my vane, guess its better than the whole arrow, these were at least close to my bullseye.
-
ive bought a few last fall, gonna try to use um this spring but im still trying to figure out how to use them and get the sounds i want, not having much luck really. any tips?
