There is a farm up the road from me where the hunters are only after bear. The farmer has been having trouble with them and has about 7 around his farm. These are specifically targeted, but the hunters know they are there. Either way, it makes for an exciting bear hunt! ;D

And those people should be removed from the field for life upon conviction. One of the reasons we have this problem is because these unsafe shooters are not forced out of the field for life. That would go a long way in showing all hunters this is intolerable and the consequences are severe.
-
Taxpayers would be charged for the deer damage too if these permits were eliminated. Farmers would just get an assessment of the damage and send the bill to the DEC. The state would probably also decide to add that cost to the NY Hunting Licenses for us to pay.

Lightfield Hybred sabot slugs. But I use a 12 gauge.

"The warden service and the law enforcement community in Wisconsin have been staunch proponents of retaining the back tag requirement for deer and bear hunters. Back tags have played an important role in the identification and apprehension of the suspects in trespassing and hunting law violations. We also feel the while not infallible, the need to display a back tag does help reduce the incidents of individuals hunting without a valid license." So there you go. Maybe all licensed drivers should have to post their driver's license in the rear window of their car too. This would help authorities check you out and check to see you have a valid one. :

I shot everything from a .22 to a .458 Lott. I deer hunt with the 7mm-08 now, but used to use the 30-06, the .35 Rem and a .243 too! If I had nothing else to hunt deer with other than a .223, I would! It ain't my first choice, but I'm sure it would do the job if I did mine and kept it within it's limitations.

You have to be pompous, judgmental and righteous to say "Freedom of Choice My Butt!" Perhaps you long for a dictatorship in this land? Energy should be 1000 ft lbs for me to be happy, but I don't think I have the right to tell others what to do if they are not breaking any laws.
-
Remington has the .17 Remington which is a center fire round with a 4000 fps muzzle velocity. It has plenty of energy too. But designed as a varmint round, it lacks a good bullet for any kind of penetration. I have never done it, but many deer have been harvested with the .223 using good bullets designed to penetrate. If you look at a ballistics table you can see they do have the energy to do it, but the shot has to be well placed. Some people can shoot it more accurately than a bigger round. If it's legal, don't knock it. Freedom of choice is a good thing my friends.

Better than having your head in the sand.

In my opinion, this unlawful attitude is pervasive in all areas of society, not just among hunters. Many people are self centered and immoral. They feel it is only illegal if you get caught. heck just look at all the speeders on the highway and motorists who don't obey traffic laws in general.
-
Not crazy. Stupid! Anyone who does this should have his hunting privileges removed for life, and that's after everything else he can be charged with. There is no excuse, and should be no tolerance for, pulling a trigger without being able to see and identify exactly what you are shooting at.

That explanation reinforces my suspicion the rule was implemented to allow authorities to treat hunters as guilty until proven innocent. What are we, motor vehicles? We need a license plate hung on our backs so anyone can obtain info on us with just one look? Name, address and maybe even SS# with just a number they see on our back? Did it ever occur to these folks a law breaker just takes the thing off his back prior to breaking the law? It's an attitude that says, "We think you are potentially a bad person because you are hunting, so we treat you like one and leave you alone if you don't violate any laws." That is a Police State attitude my friends! How would you feel if you were told, everyone had to wear a license on their back every where they went during the day, just in case they did something illegal? That's exactly what they are saying here. Remember how the Nazi's told the Jews they had to wear a Star of David on their clothes at all times? It's a sign forced upon you by authorities that DO NOT LIKE YOU! It's CONTROL! And all of the lemmings in society just allow them to do it without even a whimper. The Government Is Not Your Friend! And nothing they do is for your benefit, no matter how much they say it is!

You win the bet my friend! I also enjoyed some Crown Royal at home after I dropped it off at the Taxidermist's shop.

Sod, even though you were able to follow blood, if the deer traveled a mile and was still alive a hour later, it wasn't a vital hit. It may have died from the hit after a while, but I wouldn't consider the shot a kill shot. After you take a few deer you will see they can bleed a lot for a long time from a wound that will not kill them. If the deer runs past another hunter and he shoots it, it is his deer. Track the blood to the property line. If you don't have permission to trespass on other property, do not cross over onto it until you get permission. Experience will teach you to put a precise shot into a deer that will drop it in it's tracks. Even then, shots may be off and deer may still run, even when hit well. But if you hit the heart or lungs, it won't travel that far. That's just part of hunting Sod. You hunt and you learn. But these are the experiences that will make you a better hunter if you learn from them and strive to avoid past mistakes in the future.

Yes. Although you would need to buy the non-resident license, there was no extra charge for the bear tag.

Welcome aboard! I assume you are a 7mm08 fan too!

Too many morons out there think if it doesn't have Blaze Orange on, it's OK to shoot!

Stokes State Forest in NW NJ at 9:30AM on Saturday 12/11/10. This Bear had an estimated live weight of 300 pounds. It dressed out at 260. It was taken with one shot to the heart at 75 yards from a Savage Bolt Action 12 gauge 210F slug gun with a fully rifled barrel and a Nikon 2x7 scope. The ammo was a Lightfield Hybrid Sabot Slug. The bear took one jump and died 10 yards from where it was shot. It will become nice rug for my home in the Catskills.

Of all of the hunting zones we have in NY, I didn't know we had a "Twilight Zone". ;D

I Love It! Proof that my theory that, "God does not subtract from your lifetime, the hours spent hunting and fishing.", is true.
