  1. I was walking back from the stand after dark. I set my back pack down the side by the electric fence where the trail leads to my vehicle, to remove a big branch from the trail that had fallen. I set my phone on my backpack as a light. when I got the stick out of the way i went to grab my phone. Tripped and sent my phone flying over the electric fence. unable to reach it with a stick I had to either walk a good ways in the dark to the entrance or try to climb over the fence. Thinking the farmer shut it off as the cows were out of these fields for hunting season, I grabbed a hold of it. it was still on. ended up getting a little shock and adding about 45 mins to an hour more of walking around in the dark. my son left my regular flashlight on earlier that day killing the battery.
  2. so you are able to hook it on the string while in the stand? my biggest fear was losing it right at the worst moment. but from a stand point of gloves and coat sleeves it seems easier. I may have to pick up one and try it. good luck.
  3. I have the diamond Razor edge- which is the older version of the infinite edge. I love how adjustable it is and it grows with the shooter. I find myself using this more in a hunting situation because I learned on it and its a little more compact. hope this helps.
  4. after driving this car all week on a 40 tank of gas, I am glad I made the switch. I have a fuel efficent car with more than half the miles on the odemoeter. I have my brother on the look out for an older truck to use for crummy days and hunting/hauling. he usually finds a deal- i will use the money that I sold my atv for. I really didnt need the atv as many guys at camp have them for dragging deer. my two feet will do at this point.
  5. thanks RangerClay, making me feel a bit better. my kids are not going to remember driving to the places as much as I hop they remember what we do while we are there. I am going to pay somethings up and try to get a beater truck- maybe by this fall, def next spring. just enough for hauling a few things and hunting. nothing fancy.
  6. Sounds like it's Half and half. I have had a truck or 4x4 for almost my whole life driving. Feels weird to be back in the car. I really loved the truck. But from a financial stand point with a young family it makes sense. My brother does have a truck that lives down the road that is usually fine with me taking it. I will make this work and then in a few years hopefully things will be differnt. I'd rather be able to afford things for my children.
  7. Feeling a little bummed that I had to trade my truck in. Due to driving more for work and the addition of a second child I had to down grade to a 4 cylinder car. Feeling bummed about not having a truck. I have my wife's small suv that I can use a cargo carrier on or trailer. Or of I get desperate I'll wrap the deer up and out it in the trunk. Haha. Any one ever been in my boat?
  8. What do you guys use for gloves? I have a pair of insulated hunting gloves, they keep me warm but do not fit into the trigger. I have a lighter pair that works but my fingers freeze. I am looking for something that is water proof and would work with the trigger. how do those mittens with the fold backs work? any ideas would be appreciated. thanks
  9. Good Afternoon, I am recently new to hunting from a tree stand last year, after years of ground hunting. I ditched the harness that came with the stand and bought a nice one for this year. After reading stories on here and seeing them on tv I decided that I should not be a bone head and not go into the stand without one. I have watched videos and tried everything on and this weekend I will go do a few test runs before I can get out to hunt next weekend. The only question I have is the whats a good way to use it while having a ladder stand. I know how to use it with the tree strap. I am having trouble with using it on the ladder and transition point to hook it to the tree strap. what do you guys do to protect from a fall there. thanks!
  10. Did you ever get anyone to hunt with or get out for a hunt? I will be going out this year- been a long time since I have duck hunted.
  11. thank you wheelieman- i agree finding spots are hard nowadways. Being persistent with research and practice will pay off once the season rolls around.
  12. I am already working on calling and clays.. think im driving my wife nuts with the calls.. o well! I actaully met up with a friends father at a get together and he plans to have me tag along to get some refreshing under my belt. He tells me he would rather duck hunt than deer hunt- persoanlly my self I dont see that happening to me. Do any of you guys have tips or pointers you want to share? every try any dry land hunting? I am not sure how it would work here in NY.
  13. thanks for your input. I am actually close to cicero swamp and never even though of it. What technigue do you guys recommend? I have never been to cicero swamp before. like i said I have a canoe and a really old pop put blind. I have some of my grandfathers old decoys and want to get back into it. cant wait to shoot some ducks again. thanks
  14. Im looking to get back into duck hunting- I have not done this in about 10 years or so. My grandfather used to take me to his buddys farm with a nice little area of water. My trouble is coming up with decent areas for duck hunting. I have a canoe and pretty basic pop up blind that I can blend in. do any of you know some good public areas to get in some duck hunting. Preferably closer to the east of central ny. I do acess to land with a creek/river on it- i am not sure if this would be big enough to attract and hold some mallards. do you guys have any simple approaches to making the hunt simple and sucessful. When I went 10 years ago it was in a nice area with a kick butt blind- which I no longer have. thanks
  15. walking out of the stateland the other day and over hearing confusion with a dec officer and a guy who had a doe as to which area it was. got me thinking about what do they do if it is the wrong area. do they take the deer and fine? have any of you seen this? I would not do this, but have wondered about it.
  16. Nice cover. I have the orange with the real tree. Have had it for about 6 months and still going well. And I am pretty rough with phones. That is why I took so long to finally get a smart phone. When my wife upgraded, I took her black otter box plastic and put the camo cover on it. Looks sharp as well.
  17. Sounds like you got lucky! What a way to start your hunt off. Glad you were able to stay on there and for the heads up. I recently upgraded and have the clips
  18. I haven't seen as much as well. Saw 4 does eating a few hundred yards from my stand this evening. Hope it picks up soon, before they get spooked with the Guns and extra people in the woods down here. Good luck
  19. In game if you want to keep it here. Hoping to learn as much as I can. So when I have my own large tract someday I will be ahead of the game. Looks like you have a great set up and could do some great things with that land. Good luck!
  20. I am happy hunting season is here!

  21. Whats your opinions/ expiernces on the ghost blinds. I can not find much on this forum about them and was wondering. I see videos on youtube about them and was wondering if anyone had used one here. http://www.ghostblind.com/
  22. Dave, thank you for the reply. This does make sense and doable. I know the farmer will plow this, as he did it for the land owner a few years ago becuase he did not want to brush hog it all. I will get a soil sample- is there any special way to acquire this. Also who do I take it/send it to? I can look it up online if I need to. Are there plants that come back every year? thanks
  23. thank you for the responses. I do agree that I should hunt hard down here with the bow. and that I will do starting this weekend and next. I am laid off from work and wanted to get out midweek with my cousin who only gun hunts. So we planned on taking our chances up there for a few days. I am quite famaliar with the 46 corners area becuae of being there on a snowmobile a few times. Just wanted to know if anyone had suggestions of where to start. Alot more woods than I hunt down here. I will PM you MXS. Sounds like empeyville/46 corners/happy valley is a good place to start.
  24. Dave, thank you for the reply and guidance. I drew out a little map of the area to try to really dial this in. the yellow is the property lines give or take. The orange is where I have seen deer recently and about where some heavy traveled trail are. I put an X where I feel like It would be a good area to put a plot. It is fairly open, and gives me plenty of spots to put a stand not near the property lines. I can go on to the surrounding areas to recover, but can not hunt on it. this area was mowed at the end of last summer but ignored this year. so right now I would need to mow some paths. I do not have much machinery just a tractor and a tractor with a bucket. The crab apple trees are on the south side of the creek. Which i forgot to mark. I see have seen tons of deer signs there. Thanks for your help. It would be nice to get this parcel good enough for hunts close to home.
