I have not hunted stateland much and never for turkeys. Where I do most of my turkey hunting is a mixture of farm feilds and woods. I usually set up near a roost or an edge of a feild and call them in. I was wondering if you guys had any luck seeing turkeys in stateland. The stateland where I would be hunting is almost all wooded with a high canopy. You think their will be birds there? or shold I drive the extra 20 mins and hunt the farm? I know I need to get out and scout. I don;t want to put any scouting efforts in if you don't think it would be an ideal location for some gobblers. by the way... I can't wait for may!!

Anyone counting down the days till May 1st ?
Hunterny28 replied to HopkintonHunter's topic in Turkey Hunting
glad I am not the only one thinking about May 1st also. I use my 12 ga with the remington nitro turkey shot. I have had good luck with it and don't want to switch something that works. Just need to practice my calls(which I see drives your wives nuts as well) haha -
Dick's Sporting Goods clearance sale
Hunterny28 replied to 132 eight pointer's topic in Deals, Coupons and Specials
I did notice they had quite a few deals on remaining items. I got some arrows and boradheads at a decent price. Remeber in the nys dec hunting book there is a dicks coupon that lets you take 10 off any 50 spent. (off any hunting, camping or fishing item) Just incase you have it left and want to go bargain shopping. -
Our hunting camp in 7m was not great either. I think the weather was a big factor like you said. Deer movement was all at night it seemed like. Saw a nice buck during bow season, couldn't get a shot off. Never to see him again until the weekend after Muzzle loader week.

sorry about that. Guess I should have thought about it a little more before jumping to conclusions. I thought there was a definate sign of a poacher. There could be numerous reasons why the deer is there. Just hope it wasn't a poacher or someone not persistent enough to find their wounded animal.

It did come with that and not sure what it was. Makes some more sense now. Thanks for the help! Phade- I already bought the buckhorn for him which wich will be just fine for what he needs it for. I do agree that the wolf is a great ML that will be using it all the time. he will just be using it a few days during late ML season.

thanks for getting back to me. I will look into the capping tool you are talking about. I can imagine fumbling around with a little primer in the cold is fun! I bought the gun for him and waiting to give it to him for his birthday! looks like some time on the range is in order

seeing this makes me angry and gives an even worse image to hunting. I wish I would of been able to get the meat for my freezer this year!

nice bucks! you will love the mounts when you get them back. Making me wish I got a deer like that this year. Welcome to the forum!

Haha i was going to say the same thing!

I agree with the electrical tape over the barrel of a ML. I dont have to muchexpiernce with the shoot through windows. I alway have them up when I used my friends blind. I dodnt like having them down to get int he way of a shot or some other varaible to cause an issue. I will see how it works on my new blind this spring, but will end up keeping them down. I have had hunting partners have good expiernces with the shoot through windows. Like stated above, try to have him get out there and practice shooting through them.

was a good game! I like watching games that are down to the wire!

this was one of my worries also. one the cap is in, does it usually stay in there pretty good or does it fall out? I don't want him to be fussing with caps instead of hunting!
-
do you want to trade for a 7m or giving a 7m for something else? let me know. thanks

where were they a month or two ago! I am seeing them a lot more too. Almost hit one today on the way home from work. She was running hard and fast across the road!

I agree with getting to know the neighbors. Where we hunt, the land owner made sure to introduce us to the neighbors. This way he has someone always keeping an eye on the place. Like Gman stated above. I wouldn't leave anything in sight through a window or when you are there if close to the road. And try to make sure to change up your pattern and make them trying to guess when you will show up. I have heard of people putting up trail cams to try to grab pictures if someone is sneaking around. good luck with finding a deal and don't let the thought of vanadilsm stop you from doing so. Just take all the precautions you can and enjoy the new property!

who here owns or has expiernce with a cva buck horn. I am looking for a muzzle loader to get my father for his birthday. He probally won't use it much, just the last weekend of SZ ML. I think this is a pretty cheap way to get him into it and he can go from there is he likes it. I do like the design of the CVA wolf and break open action and removable breech. This is along the lines of my traditions buckstalker. do you think these are a decent gun or should I spend a few extra bucks and and go with the wolf? thanks

All is good. we decided to take it and we are having a laywer look into everything and make sure it will all be legal and transfred to us. I am excited about this becuase it is actaully almost 10 acres, he was not sure as to how many acres it was. Well going through the tax maps and walkings the property we saw it was much bigger than we thought. walking around the property we noticed a lot of tracks and rubs from this fall. I took the long way home from work to go by the property and saw 2 bigger does and a littler one feeding in the feild. I am excited to get this and hunting season to come. Is there anything I should do to make this more accomadting to the hunter? or just leave it alone? I plan to scout a little late summer and set up a stand. There are a few crab apple trees and a creek runs through there. The farmer said he is going to keep the hay feild, so the small part of his feidl that is on the land will stay hay. thanks for your input guys.

we talked to the farmer and her said that he didn't care if we were to go on the property and retrieve anything as the hunters who hunt its is on the other side. He said that the use a specific channel on the radio and just radio in to them if need be or dive down the road and check for the truck to give them a heads up. So the right side and back of the property is fine to go for retrieval and this includes hard woods and farm fields. on the left side of the property is a pretty big corn/ hay field and this will still belong to the family friend that we would be getting the land from. So there wont be a problem getting on this land. We will make sure all the paperwork and such is in the proper order before accepting the land as payment. We are looking at this for a few reasons other than hunting. Eventually we want to grow some Christmas trees and pumpkins. so there will be an area for us to do so. Also we have a place to set up a little range for shooting the bows and guns. which is close to home and a plus because we live to close to the village to do this at home. We also talked to the land owner and he said in 5 to 10 years he would be looking to sell all the farming land when he moves south. so we could have a nice chunk of land after it is all said and done.

Pyrography - First Buck, Finally DONE!!!
Hunterny28 replied to 5.9cummins's topic in General Chit Chat
looks great! makes me remember the days when I used to tinker around with the wood burner. maybe I will pull it out and give it a try when I am bored one of these crummy days. Keep up the great work! -
We have the chance of getting 5 acres of land as payment owed to us for an agreement we made with a family friend. I was wondering if 5 acres would be ok to hunt or it is a little to small. There is a creek/river that runs through the one side near the woods. maybe 1/3 of it is a hay field that is rented out to the farmer who farms the 50 acres right next to it. He says he has guys hunting on his property. there is a benefit of getting this land if its able to be hunted on because of it being close to home that we wouldn't have to drive far. I think with the creek being there and hunter son the neighboring property it may have some deer movement. There is signs of deer all over the place, scraps tracks and bedding spots. I just wanted your guys input. This would be used for bow and shotgun only. (as it is in a shotgun only county)

I enjoy snowmobiling and that has been a bust this year. was going to try ice fishing with some friends this year but once again mother nature has put a damper things. After these seasons pass I will look forward to getting my boat in the water, fishing and spring turkey hunting. Of course there is the family vacations in summer and camping. But I am always looking forward to the next deer season! My brother has a bunch of maple trees that I marked out this year. Thinking about tapping them and trying to make my own maple syrup. Something I always wanted to try.
