  1. I think a lot of taxidermist wait until the y have enough to send off to the tannery, many do not do it themselves.........so if you drop yours off on opening day, it may sit in his freezer until he has enough to send off, that could be 2 months lost right there.

  2. I think some of the campsites on eastern long island are open for most of archery.....I stayed at wildwood one year during the week and it was pretty deserted, certainly not backwoods but would be a good time and not too far for a lot of the guys and the hunting is close....just a thought.

  3. I guess that's where the "mentoring" part comes in....you look at the kid and say "you can shoot it if you want, but we're in for a lot of work if you do and you're helping every step of the way."

  4. I don't see the necessity in getting the bear turned into a trophy of sorts...just eat it and toss the remains like most of us do with the deer we shoot........some nice field photos serve the purpose of preserving memories just fine.

Um, no. Tree stands were designed ( even back when they were just boards nailed to a tree and a few 2x4 nestled in the crotch of a tree ) to get better sight line of incoming game, and get your scent up and hopefully away from deer. The use of them has nothing to do with private or public land.

I could see someone wanting to use one on heavily hunted public land as a safety thing.........up out of the line of fire so to speak.

After planting the food plot. Came home to 2 landsharks, 2 modelos, and 1 Coors and some KanJam and pool. I know Rob hates my Mexican beer so maybe he will like this better.

Time to shower and head to dinner party for some more drinking.

  7. wooden platforms, big nails for climbing pegs and no safety harness in the beginning.......it's a wonder myself or anyone I hunted with never got hurt using that system. The first safety belts we used just looped around the tree and cinched around your chest under your armpits, if the fall didn't kill you the safety belt would for sure.

As someone said before, don't show up at the last minute in your camo. Go now and start knocking on doors, heck you should of done it months ago. Also you don't need to dress up, but don't look like you just got done working in your yard, or after you've had a couple beers. Offer to give them some meat if you get one. My dad and I hunt a farm right down the street from me and every year we take a bag of meat to them after the season and a christmas card with a $100 in it. We've been there 4 or 5 years now and he lets us keep our 4 wheelers there for the season and this year he agreed to let us put in a food plot. No matter what happens be nice, and thank them for their time.

I agree on the "heck you should of done it months ago." part.

  9. I'll give it a shot, no particular plan. I went two years ago and actually saw one......the area I was hunting was open for bear but the opposite side of the road was not........guess where he was?

4P has very few DMP's.  But you never know how many people apply.

yeah, but with most of the surrounding areas requiring preference points it's pretty much the only option if you don't have one.

    Thanks, jj.

The site wasn't that intuitive, but I finally figured it out. Appreciate the advice to go for 4P as well. I have a friend in Andes with 60 acres so that could work out.

there is a lot of public access land in 4P as well, so that's always as option. I've never hunted it for deer, so no advice as far as that goes.

Should I start a separate thread for idiotic first timer questions or just keep them here? Here? Okay.

Trying to navigate the license page.

    Looks like I need:

Hunting License $22 which gives me most animals

Turkey Permit $10 (if I decided to hunt them) and for Woodcock I need to register with HIP

    Deer Management Permit $10

I'm not sure I see whether I need to or where and how to apply for specific deer tags section for my area which I think is 4O.

    Again, thanks.

4O needs a preference point if I remember correctly, so unless you have one you'll definitely get denied, but you'll have one in the bank for next year......if I was you I'd go 4O first choice and 4P second, you may have a shot at 4P which is right next to you, or worse case you'll have a preference point for next year. The DECALS system should walk you through how to apply.
