I certainly wouldn't think so. And anyone that is really hunting turkeys probably wouldn't have them. All this would be mounting evidence,  but as long as we are laying out the theoretical.  what if you already filled your deer tags and only had a turkey tag on you?

wouldn't be an issue because I would be totally geared for turkey hunting and carrying a shotgun....leave the bow and crossbow home when I'm going for birds.

I guess I am out of touch, I don't get those "gear" comments. my backpack is always packed the same. short of a diaphragm call which  I don't use in fall. I mainly just ambush based on their patterns. i will admit I am not a very good turkey hunter. Knife is the same, wipes, little toilet paper, couple plastic bags, zip ties, compass, GPS. Pen. Doesn't really change.

ok, say you have rattling antlers, deer lure, deer drag rope, butt out tool, grunt call, doe bleat call, fawn in distress call.......stuff like that, you think any ECO is gonna believe you're turkey hunting?

  3. I'm willing to bet, that if you are found hunting with a crossbow before the legal season, and everything about you points to "Deer Hunting", you're going to have a problem. It has nothing to do with with what category a crossbow falls into, it's all about having an implement that is not legal for what you're doing at the time.....if all of your gear is for nothing but deer hunting, the presumptive evidence points to "Deer Hunting".

  4. all else aside, I guess the question you have to ask yourself is "what am I hunting today?", if the answer is Deer, then you should probably leave the crossbow home until it's legal.....if you ran into an ECO and he asked what you were doing and you said "deer hunting, but I have the crossbow "just in case" I see a Turkey"....chances are you're gonna be in the wrong, you can waste time and money fighting a ticket, and you may or may not wind up winning. But, in the end the ECO lost nothing, LEO's have tickets thrown out all the time...they get paid to go to court and all that good stuff, no skin off their teeth.

However both of those implements are legal to hunt turkeys with, so is what you did really illegal?  Who's to say you aren't hunting turkeys?  Both of those implements are commonly carried at the same time in the spring turkey season.

right, but in the spring season both weapons are legal at the SAME time....while bow and crossbow are both legal weapons for deer and turkey, the crossbow is only legal for deer during certain time periods....so if you're in an area that the the crossbow season for deer isn't open yet, although it's legal at some point, it's not legal when you're carrying it.

Ive been following along. I have to say, this is no differant than myself carrying a .22 pistol or rifle with me to my stand along with my bow. I could say its for squirels, but that doesnt matter you have to pick 1 or the other. It is illegal to posses a weapon that is illegal to take deer with while bow hunting. Right now it is illegal to take a deer with a crossbow. Not sure how this has made it to 6 pages...

yes, it really is that simple.

It does. I did not go looking for the other thread until almost through this. But. My point was, absent a dead deer or an officer witnessing a shot at a deer, someone please tell me the section of environment law that was broken. Before anymore folks chime in about is being in ML season so it is a firearm. Look at the definitions of a firearm for environment law and tell me if you honestly think it matches. I am not asking a lot. Just a section for the violation

no, it doesn't match.....my guess is eventually with enough violations and inquiries involving it, it will be addressed at some point.

Just saw this place featured on Food network other night. No recipe we could find for the tomato hot oil dipping sauce. We did write down the ingredients so we're going to try and knock it off. Supposedly Wegmans sells it but we couldn't find it there. These riggies were outstanding

you can order the dipping sauce right from Pastabilities website, I've gotten it a few times.

  9. Deer will recover from a lot of injuries on their own, not every deer that's limping has to be put down....just look at people who get injured, they limp around just the same, but eventually get better. I wouldn't have second thoughts about putting down a deer with a severe injury, depending on the severity of it and overall condition of the deer would dictate if I burn a tag or not.

No salmon run...our Son barrowed my car, we had purchased from a friend. Never noticed a red wing souvenir mini bat under the driver seat. It had rolled out and was in partial view from the back window....Son in class school cop went around looking in car Windows in the parking lot. That SOB had him arrested and charged.. We never the thing was even in the car..they charged another girl for having a cake knife from a family picnic on the back seat floor..both had to plea to lesser charges to save their collage or military chances and do probation...

that's because it's falls into the deadly weapon category, might be looked at like a billy club, and you can be arrested for merely possessing it.

Normally the criminal possession of a weapon stems from possessing any "weapon" with intent to use that item against another.

Therefore, the weapon could be a screw driver, crossbow or crowbar if the intent was to use that item against a person for bodily harm. It doesn't have to be a "weapon" in the terminology we normally use.

    Menacing 2nd?

So as of right now. Anyone that has taken a bowhunter safety coarse and that buys a archery license can use a bow and participate in the archery season. Furthermore if you have a disability that prevents you from using a bow you can get a waiver to participate.
Tell me again why we need to allow a weapon in the archery season that is hand drawn and held until it is fired?

We have inclusion, full inclusion. Anyone that wants to bow hunt can bowhunt in our archery season.

did you read the requirements to get a modified crossbow permit that allows someone who's disabled to use a crossbow during the entire archery season? you basically have to be blowing threw a straw to use one.....and that's not a joke.

if i get in a car accident because of some kid plowing into me with his dad's SUV it'd make me sit out bow season early. if some like happens, can hunt with a crossbow while i carry a doctors note to show it to an ECO or would i have to display it with my back tag that's in my pocket?

pretty sure your submit documentation from your Dr. along with the application for the permit to DEC and they in turn supply you with the permit that you carry with your license...doesn't have to be displayed on the outside of your body.

    here ya go....http://www.dec.ny.gov/permits/25022.html

Let me ask ..this may actually be a new point in this discussion...For those of you that don't want it in "bow season" are you OK with them in small game and turkey season?

I'm going to throw out the honesty factor for that question by stating this..... Anyone with a turkey license is allowed in the woods to hunt fall turkey with a cross bow. Now those dates for the southern zone are Oct 21  - Nov 3  I really have to laugh because the LEGAL time to be deer hunting with a cross bow is Nov 4th- Nov 17th this year.  Just think about that a moment...how many guys that do both will sling their cross bow over their backs and carry their vertical bow in their hands when going to their blinds as I do? not many only need to walk a few hundred yards from their house, BUT a good many are hunting private lands with close camps and houses..hey even sticking a vertical in the trunk and going back to get it before"relieving" a deer.  I really laugh when I see these regulations Either they are  Pollyanna's in their train of thought or they are hoping for some  $$$ in fines...I do not know, but it's ridiculous...just have the inclusion and be done with it...LOL

that's my thing, it's not so much the weapon that bothers me, but what it may attract and the problems it may create.......and in reality it's more of an unfounded concern because those who will do shady stuff will do it no matter. I'm sure the majority on here will hunt with the crossbow exactly like they do with a vertical bow so it's barely a blip on the radar, it's those that won't that concern me.

But I can't see how just the skin can be cut 180 degrees around a leg from a broadhead traveling in a straight line without cutting muscle.

I would expect to see more damage as well, the odds of a cut that big not cutting deeper are slim...but I would also expect more damage if it was torn open by barbed wire or an attack by another dog or whatever else may have caused it.....I’m no expert, but I think skin is usually tight, so it tends to open up more once it’s sliced.

Does anyone use a climbing stand as a permanent stand? I have heard you can ratchet strap the top and bottom to the tree and then get in an out with sticks. Just wondering how this works.....sorry in advance if this is a thread highjacking question.

I have, climbed up and ratchet strapped it in and some one put in steps for me so I could climb down.

  17. as far as saying it couldn't have been done by a broadhead without cutting flesh, I have to disagree...how many have grazed deer and only cut hair? simply a matter of a few millimeters either way and this is totally possible.......heck, I've cut myself and never made it down to the muscle past the skin.

  18. yeah, I have a tough time breaking balls of store employees at places like that......90% of the time they're just kids/young adults that are working under store policies. That's right up there with the people who go off on the young girl working as a cashier because the coupons are off or some nonsense like that. I find it just as easy to show them whatever they want and go about my business as opposed to wasting 20 minutes getting myself worked up.
